Do you know people who will emigrate if labour win?

1000 replies

groyard · 24/05/2024 12:24

This is making me all very stressed. Trying not to freak myself out over future socio-economic ramifications for the UK if there is a wider trend of “brain drain”.

Brother and BIL have both said that if Labour win they will be emigrating with their wives and children.

I’ve heard similar sentiment from others but assume (hope) this is hyperbole.

Just to say, none of the people mentioned are wealthy but just about comfortable. Both highly skilled and in demand internationally.

Yes, many we know may move if the tax burden is anything close to that of 1974/1979 ie paye tax

groyard · 24/05/2024 14:24

FTPM1980 · 24/05/2024 14:22

Interesting that you say your Brother...and your BIL are making these statements on behalf of their wives and children!

Also that you are bothered about brain drain.
I don't know anyone particularly clever that is a tory voter.
I know a few older wealthy people, some of whom may be well educated....but none especially bright (and mostly retired)

All the professionals I know are labour voters

I realise now I should have used the term capital flight instead of brain drain.

What a ridiculous thread!

Tory HQ are clearly feeling desperate 😂

crowgift · 24/05/2024 14:28

My thoughts exactly @PJHarvey.

How rude. I have absolutely no affiliations with the Tory party.

Grin

Seriously, the braindrain already happened because of Brexit. Half the academics I know left the country.

Yep. and with 60 universities having compulsory redundancies and the reduced working conditions afterwards (fewer staff to cover the teaching), there will be more to follow.

@groyard then could you answer the question about why they think the country will be so much worse under Labour that they’ll have to move away? It’s already in dire situation, what do they think will happen?

InterIgnis · 24/05/2024 14:33

IMO the Labour government won’t in fact be raiding the wealthy in quite the way some are anticipating. I imagine the policies will be more pro-business than the left wing of the Labour Party will be happy with (or rather are happy with, judging by some online forums calling him every sort of Tory arsehole). Starmer strikes me as a pragmatist rather than an ideologue, and he’s aware the UK needs to attract wealth.

@Itwasabrightcoldayinapril

The fact you find the idea that a higher rate taxpayer might not resent paying tax to help fund the society they live in just highlights the gross individualism of the type of people we're discussing here.

These people have always existed - they are happy to take what they can from the state/ the privileges afforded by their families but then declare they owe nothing in return.

The people I know who moved to the ME to avoid paying tax are the type of people who turn up to dinner empty handed, complain there isn't enough wine and bore everyone to death their their self importance.

God they sound awful. Don’t invite them next time eh?

bungaloid · 24/05/2024 14:41

Honestly, how much radical tax change has any government ever introduced in the UK. A gradual decline in living standards, sure, but I feel like it’s too difficult to do big changes. Or the reality is that we’re in a kind of steady state and no-one wants to rock the boat that much.

It's a pity OP that you are so swayed by the men in your family: in previous posts (I see you only joined in the last few days) you claim to be "a 30 year old management consultant at a big 4 firm", I would expect a less hysterical analytical style.

How am I being swayed? I’m not moving.

i did not recently join. I name change regularly due to posters like you who take it upon themselves to requote past posts in bad faith. Once had a weirdo try and throw the fact I was praising a somewhat expensive moisturiser back in my face on a separate thread.

😂🤷‍♀️ same

poetryandwine · 24/05/2024 15:18

OP s getting a hard time here that isn’t deserved. I don’t think very highly of her BIL but if he wants to leave (temporarily, it seems) for as yet no good reason it sounds like we can manage without him.

It isn’t any reason to puck on her.

I do think he sounds rather peremptory in announcing that he be moving his wife and children with no thought for the consequences to their lives. Again, not OP’s fault

poetryandwine · 24/05/2024 15:18

Puck should be pick

TempsPerdu · 24/05/2024 15:22

Celebrate yes; emigrate no.

And most of my circle are middle class professionals in London on much higher than average salaries.

groyard · 24/05/2024 15:24

Proof that I regularly name change and did not sign up “days ago”.

I’m actually glad that my BIL and brother seem to be in the minority. I had the same anxiety when similar sentiments were being said with Brexit. I’m just very aware of the fact we do need well paid earners to stay in this country.

Wasityoubecayse · 24/05/2024 15:25

Sorry I'm realising the age of the posters here. No we don't have to fuck off if we don't like something, we try and make change and then if that doesn't work we then fuck off. Who are you to tell me or anyone that should accept poor service and high tax. Also there really isn't a large amount of highly skilled English speakers migrating here. The system under labour then the tories has br9ken down.

pikkumyy77 · 24/05/2024 15:26

InterIgnis · 24/05/2024 13:55

For me? Nothing. For society? It’s the loss of another higher rate tax payer that’s added to the capital flight statistics. Whether anyone else thinks it’s a good or bad thing doesn’t concern me any more than the ‘good riddance’ offends me.

The cold hard truth is that capital flight is a big problem and the opposite of what countries actually want if they’re aiming for economic prosperity. It isn’t the ones leaving that will have to deal with the mess left behind and shoulder an ever increasing burden, they’re home and dry. ironically it’s those that are celebrating their departure that will have to do that.

Tbh I already left years ago, we came back on my husband’s work contract which has now come to an end, so it isn’t because of an incoming Labour government.

How stupid are these people “high earners leaving” are not the same as “capital flight.” Capital flight is when big investors leave, and whole businesses. Upper class twits leaving is neither here nor there. They leave behind ghe jobs they were doing snd sell the resl estate they were squatting on so:hooray?

PigletJohn · 24/05/2024 15:27

No, it's just a story people put about to try to swing opinions.

You might have heard Conservatives saying that ending the non-dom concession would damage the country because hordes of billionaire freeloaders would flee. They've stopped saying it now.

You might remember them saying that introducing a minimum wage would increase employment because the nation depends on workers living in poverty. Not true.

tiddletiddleboomboom · 24/05/2024 15:29

LOLOL no. I know loads who have said this in the past. None of them actually did it.

I mean, it's easy to say isnt it? but once you look at the cost and logistics its ridiculous to say that on a whim.

IsawwhatIsaw · 24/05/2024 15:31

No but I have spoken to several people who have said they want to leave if the Tories get in again.

leamington66 · 24/05/2024 15:36

I have already gone, it seems pretty clear which way it will go

horseyhorsey17 · 24/05/2024 15:36

Ahhhh as expected, another BS Labour scaremongering political thread, prob started by Tory HQ.

Don't worry lads, nobody can move away from the country, you saw to all that with Brexit.
