Do you know people who will emigrate if labour win?

1000 replies

groyard · 24/05/2024 12:24

This is making me all very stressed. Trying not to freak myself out over future socio-economic ramifications for the UK if there is a wider trend of “brain drain”.

Brother and BIL have both said that if Labour win they will be emigrating with their wives and children.

I’ve heard similar sentiment from others but assume (hope) this is hyperbole.

Just to say, none of the people mentioned are wealthy but just about comfortable. Both highly skilled and in demand internationally.

Excellent. And who will pay all the taxes to fund all the things that you need?

Edited

Those of us still here, some of whom will move into the roles vacated by the people emigrating, obviously. Amusing that people paid a lot seem so frequently under the delusion that no one would be willing or capable of filling their shoes.

JohnCurtice · 24/05/2024 13:34

Not a soul. We are well off (top 1%) as are most of our friends. We’ll be voting Labour as will many people I know.

I’d rather pay a bit more tax in a decent and well-functioning country than less tax in the chaotic shithole Britain is turning into under the Tories.

Same.

OhYoko · 24/05/2024 13:30

Paul Daniels, Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Frank Bruno al said they'd emigrate if Labour won the 1997 General Election. None of them did. Mores the pity.

What a loss Paul Daniels would’ve been

@Itwasabrightcoldayinapril

Where are they all moving to?

Are you planning to emigrate as well?

The ME or Aus.

No not yet. We only moved back a few years ago (job and school reasons).

But yes, in a few years we will move. Probably 6months/ 6 months, because we love the U.K..

Just not the way it’s managed. Problem is anyone decent, doesn’t want to be a politician.

Thepeopleversuswork · 24/05/2024 13:37

Ridiculous blowhard nonsense from who know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

As others have very eloquently pointed out, your intellectually and morally challenged relatives can hardly be representative of a “brain drain”: they sound like classic “nice but dim” pillocks. Anyone with the slightest grasp on the economic prospects of this country would realise the time to jump ship from the UK was about eight years ago.

InterIgnis · 24/05/2024 13:37

Oh, it definitely is a problem, because they’re not being replaced. Wealth flight means the burden falls on the shoulders of those with less, and is ultimately unsustainable. Capital flight really isn’t good news for a country, no matter how you try and spin it.

Cattery · 24/05/2024 13:38

dameofdilemma · 24/05/2024 12:39

No but I’m hoping the voter being interviewed on Channel 4 news who was banging on about migrants ruining the country emigrates.

Preferably somewhere he’s resented for being a migrant. For added irony.

Rwanda? That seems a popular choice

Tylot · 24/05/2024 13:38

groyard · 24/05/2024 12:34

Well BIL is in a role where many people go and do a stint in the Middle East as the packages available are lucrative. So it’s more a question of that move being hastened.

Sounds easily replaceable, the fewer Tories we have around the better

Wasityoubecayse · 24/05/2024 13:38

Why would an adult say to another adult they should piss off out there home because they are voicing there concerns. Why does this make people so angry. The reaction is irrational and deaming. I hope that those who need the support of those who are really unhappy understand what is like to not receive medical services when they need it due to NO STAFF. We have a right to speak up for what it's worth. Who do you think you are to silence us.

Oh that’s good. A functioning economy and welfare state depends on the high earners (as well as on everyone else who contributes to society, as we saw clearly in Covid). Good they can be backfilled. Hopefully the replacements will be happier to pay most of their income in tax.

AliceCallous · 24/05/2024 13:40

Tory voters are emigrating?

We could rejoin the EU!

No-one is silencing anyone - in general the feeling seems to be good luck to you if you can't stand what 14 years of Tory destruction has done to the UK. Anyone is most welcome to fuck off if they don't like it here.

groyard · 24/05/2024 13:41

ObliviousCoalmine · 24/05/2024 13:31

The child of an immigrant and he's still Tory. I correct my previous comment of "ridiculous" and replace it with "moron".

I’m extremely uncomfortable with this line of thinking. “You are a child of immigrants therefore you must vote labour”. Children of immigrants are not a monolith.

Where are people going to emigrate to? Brexit has taken freedom of movement for normal people.

Rwanda is a good destination I’ve heard.

Well the UK already had the third highest level of wealth flight in the world, and whether that increases or not remains to be seen. It isn’t an empty threat, given that it is happening:

https://www.prnewswire.com/ae/news-releases/uk-set-to-suffer-bigger-net-exodus-of-millionaires-than-russia-in-2023-301847277.html

I know people who have left and are in the process of leaving, yes. My own parents have done, as have I.

What would be the benefit of you staying? (Genuine question)
If you stay are you going to use your wealth for the good of the society that helped you earn it? If not, why should it matter if you go elsewhere?

Never heard any IRL say this.

Meadowfinch · 24/05/2024 13:45

@poetryandwine Almost every UK university - public & private - is suffering under severe budget cuts.

Home student fees of £9,250 do not come close to covering the real cost and need to be supplemented by overseas students' fees. New restrictions on post grad students bringing dependents with them into the UK, has hit that intake hard with numbers down by as much as 40% in this January's intake. At least one British public university is close to bankruptcy.

I'd say VAT on university fees is almost inevitable if Labour is elected.

God some people on this site are nuts.

If you'd prefer to live in a glorified shopping mall of a country where the sports facilities are built by slaves and women are being tortured in prison for wanting to drive, just so you can hold on to slightly more of your massively salary, go for it.

I'm personally looking forward to the slight glimmer of a possibility that my infant son might now grow up in a Britain where, if you ring for an ambulance, one might actually turn up.

It's Friday, have a glass of wine and chill out.

Brilliant. Well said x

Possiblynotever · 24/05/2024 13:47

Your brother may want to emigrate to the UAE or Dubai because of money and taxes (or lack thereof). He will emigrate anyway, and it has little to do with his political views.
Your brother still needs to work and live a pink dream in a compound with his family facing heavy restrictions. Is it better than living with Labour? Debatable.
The divide among the very rich and the middle class has reached unacceptable levels in this country, the NHS is on its knees, most people have to choose beween food and energy and knife crime is thriving. Sixteen years of Conservatives' political leadership have killed us.
Are you for real?

What have your sisters in law said about it? My DH would not be able to say that I and DC were emigrating.

lostoldname · 24/05/2024 13:49

Didn’t Andrew Lloyd Webber say he would leave in 1997. He seems to still be here.

DryIce · 24/05/2024 13:50

I am a high earner and work in the city- I have not heard anyone say this. In fact, I have heard some very unexpected people say they will vote Labour this time around.

Re tax, yes people have a moan about paying it - but in my experience mostly high earners increasingly complain about the dire state of public services - I.e. they don't mind paying their tax bill when it comes with a functioning society where ambulances and police appear ina reasonable time, they can visit a GP, their children can get into a local school.

What kind of work do you do @Itwasabrightcoldayinapril
