i've had a handspring treo 650 for the last couple of years and it's a bit gubbed now. i love it, but it looks like i've picked the Betamax video equivalent and it's been supplanted by the inferior Blackberry. gggrrrrrrrrr.

anyway, i am a bit geeky but tbh it looks like most phones do email, interweb etc nowadays so what else should i look for? i could go a decent camera as the treo one is crapola.

also, i'm probably paying far too much now as my tariff was arranged ages ago. honestly pre-dd i was the sort of person who was On Top Of Things, now i can't sort my arse from my elbow... any ideas?

Well I'll be no help. As long as I can make and receive calls and texts I don't care what else it does.

gerrof my thread then, luddite...

Oh, Kaloo, I like that a lot!

How much is that sort of thing on a contract? I do payg atm but phone is slowly giving up on me and I'd quite like not to have to buy one outright.

Aitch · 29/05/2007 00:18

hey, i've just looked at it, kaloo. what's the keyboard like? cos that's one of the reasons i like the treo, a lovely nubbly little keyboard. (i actually ahve a wireless fold-out one so i can Porperly Work On Trains).

I'll leave you techies to it. Seriously though, I'm a bit worried how out of touch I am with "modern technology" these days - like I'm getting old or something.

Kaloo20 · 29/05/2007 00:20

I have a £25 a month contract with Orange with more minutes than I Will ever use + a magic number (1 other number all calls free of charge for ever + you get an additional magic number added to your account every 6 months).

It is on an 18 month contract but to be honest this phone is so good I didn't mind the 18 month tie in. Am a long standing Orange customer anyway. This is my 4th smartphone, I love this technology

Kaloo20 · 29/05/2007 00:22

keyboard fab, just this sec picked it up and typed a text to friend, just so I can tell you. Raised keys and everything

Aitch · 29/05/2007 00:22

oh your link is much better, kaloo, i was just looking at the orange one which is crap.
what would i do without MN?
it doesn't have a touchscreen, does it?

what's the camera like?

OP posts:
Kaloo20 · 29/05/2007 00:25

touch screen ... no
camera 2mega pixals, but takes nice photos

Only thing I know with a better camera is the Nokia N95 which has a 5 mega pixal camera, but having tested one and seen them in action the SPV E650 is far superior

Aitch · 29/05/2007 00:27

interesting, cos i was looking at the nokia. it's such a minefield... i'm thinking seriously of this, i bet i'd be able to get a good deal on it (beacsue if i don't i will just leave...)
so long as no one asks me what i've been paying for the last fw years, i might just get away with this...

also, stupid question but how do you use the interweb on it? how much does it cost to download data on your tariff?

Kaloo20 · 29/05/2007 00:33

lol I don't ! the phone is loaded with technology I don't use. I have PC access all day and all evening. My train journey is spent reading the paper.

However, I have before and it is very easy - just like an MS explorer browser

Kaloo20 · 29/05/2007 00:34

Nokia N95 is full of bugs, camera is good but it's a serious techie phone (and I'm a tech and it was way too over the top for me)

Kaloo20 · 29/05/2007 00:36

If you MS Outlook, the SPV is what you want. You get all your contacts in outlook then simply download to your phone in seconds. Should you lose your phone, you don't lose all your contacts, you simply download them on to your new phone. Calendar fab too, mine has al DC's appointments loaded into Outlook and I download them

Kaloo20 · 29/05/2007 00:36

sorry - work tomorrow, must go now

Aitch · 29/05/2007 00:38

thanks kaloo, i'm really grateful. sleep well.

Well...(sorry to crash your thread Aitch), is there a good phone for those of us who have no tariffs to consider because we want/use pay as you go? I'm with Vodaphone, and have no complaints so would like to stay with them.

My phone is an old, cheap Nokia which has served me well, but is now conidered virtually a fossil by friends! Would like a reasonable camera, and the ability to send emails - but defo not looking for a geek head's high tech phone.

Suggestions gratefully received.

I've just ordered the U600 - really slim, good camera, radio, mp3 etc. It should be coming today. However, although it looks great, I only read the reviews after ordering it, and found a lot of people don't like it, so now I'm rather worried. It's the touch sensitive buttons that aren't popular apparently, but I'll keep you posted.
