It looks so lovely I want to sit and stroke it. But it needs to charge first Angry

So a quick question - the first of many...

Is there any point getting a newspaper app on it or will it be too small to have any point and I should just stick to reading the news on the web like BBC news?

"I've had my desire for a year now, and I still love it. I crocheted a cover for it"

LOLOLOLOLOLOL Grin

catinthehat2 · 04/05/2011 18:59

Astrid - check

get a barcode scanner, then use androlib to pick & choose the apps you fancy on your pc. You can just zap the QR code (square barcode) with the phone to upload, easy peasy. Much easier than dealing with android market from your phone at the beginning when you want to upload 8,0000,0000 apps

AlmightyCitrus · 04/05/2011 19:05

Hey!!! I'm crafty ok?! I have a nice thick woolly cover, that cost me nothing AND my phone is protected from bumps and scratches. So ner.

And....I made one for DH who also has a desire (matching phones...how twee) and I ended up making (and selling) several more for his customers.

Made one for my kindle too!

smsm · 04/05/2011 19:10

I got an HTC desire HD to replace my desire, and TBH I actually prefer the desire - but both are great.

catinthehat2 · 04/05/2011 19:12

I cannot imagine an Iphone owner coping with a crocheted cover without reaching for the smelling salts - Android is a whole different world!

Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 04/05/2011 19:17

I love the Out of Milk app for my shopping list and things to do list.

Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 04/05/2011 19:17

oh and runkeeper if you are a runner.

HauntedLittleLunatic · 04/05/2011 19:39

I actually prefer bog standard desire too.

Hd doesn't seem any better functionally, but a lot bigger. I also miss my optical trackball.

Niceguy2 · 04/05/2011 20:34

I find the trackball a nuisance on my GF's Desire. I notice they've got rid of it on the Desire S.

WatfordMummy If you want to do more than the real basics then I strongly suggest you see if you can upgrade to a Desire rather than the Wildfire. I bought it my GF a few months ago and whilst she like it, it was frustrating how slow it was. You can forget playing most games on it although Facebook etc are fine as long as your needs are simple.

Most ppl have covered the main apps. I'd also like to suggest Pulse News reader which is an awesome way to browse a lot of news sites at the same time. Hard to explain but use it and you'll soon see.

Oh and as for covers, get one. And a screen protector. Get several of those as the first ones never go on quite right. If you obsessively polish the screen so there is no dust at all on the screen before you apply it then it'll look fab. My friends think i'm mad cos I always take theirs off if they're bubbly and redo them! Grin

eBay only charge like £2 for 10 and similar prices for the case. Just think of the aggro if you dropped it and it smashed or scratched it to buggery cos its banging against keys in your handbag. For £4 get it protected!

Kewcumber · 04/05/2011 20:40

crocheted cover sounds cool!

so whats the best organise/calendar - any advance on astrid?

What on earth is Out of milk?!

Enjoy your phone Kew. I love HTC phones and will be upgrading this May. (Currently have the HTC Touch HD which is okay but outdated now)
I have BBC Sports, News and Facebook as my main tabs on the front. (Also use The Guardian. The Telegraph (excellent for rugby) is okay but not as mobile friendly I find) Did not have a screen cover but do use the wallet it came in. That protects the screen pretty well.
I did drop it once (When watching cricket at the Oval) and the screen cracked, £150 it cost to fix but they did upgrade the hardware etc on the phone at the same time which was nice. But maybe with the next phone I will insure it.
Hope you and DS are well.

BigGitDad · 04/05/2011 21:08

Do you use outlook Express at work Kew? I do and I synchronise the diary and contacts etc on the phone. I choose not to have my work e mails on it only so I can get some privacy but may change that on the next phone.
It might be worth speaking to the techie guys at work and see what they say.

watfordmummy · 04/05/2011 21:38

Thanks for that, its a free upgrade so might see how I get on as have a Nokia E72 just now, so anything will be better tbh!

JarethTheGoblinKing · 05/05/2011 15:28

Kew - add MN to your bookmarks, and then add a shortcut on your screen :)

Kewcumber · 05/05/2011 19:54

I have no pound sign on my keyboard!? I'm an accountant I need one

OP posts:
BigGitDad · 05/05/2011 20:17

You do, go onto the numbers screen and it is one of two pages, (1/2) press on it and another page will come up with more objects etc

Kewcumber · 05/05/2011 21:04

I tried that BGD I didn't notice a £ and anyway they have a $ on the front screen [affronted]

I quite like angry birds though lose the will to live quite quickly so manage not to waste too much time on it however have downloaded a humungous solitaire package which has some fiendish solictaire type games which has been a great time waster also have downloaded a couple of games for DS.

BGD have just programmed my aol email to pick up on phone that will do for now.

Mine didnt come with a wallet so am going to order a case

OP posts:
silverfrog · 05/05/2011 21:17

the £ sign is found as follows:

open up keyboard (well, durr!)
press the 12. button to get symbols keyboard
on bottom left, there is a 1/2 button - press this to get to second page of symbols.

£ sign is in top row, third from left, iirc.

angry birds is good, but can be demoralising. it frustrates me that I have finished all but the last 3 scenes on my ipod, but cannot sync my progress, so had to start all over again on my phone...

alchemy is the one currently hooking me. and air control.

Kewcumber · 06/05/2011 00:24

but why is the £ hidden behind 3 screens? The $ is on the front screen... Angry

OP posts:
Librashavinganotherbiscuit · 06/05/2011 08:32

Kew I am with you on this one, hopefully someone with HTC foo will come and tell us how to put it on the front page.

BigGitDad · 06/05/2011 09:45

HTC is a ccompany from Taiwan so I guess the $ is more prevalent than the £.
HTC are on facebook so you can ask on there and see if you get a reply.

Niceguy2 · 06/05/2011 12:26

It's very annoying. The easiest way is to long press the $ button and when the currency buttons appear, shuffle your finger to the left. Try it, its easier to do than describe.

It's not perfect but slightly less annoying than pressing "?123" then "Alt" everytime you want to type £.

It's just little touches like this why I love my iPhone and annoys me with Android.
