It looks so lovely I want to sit and stroke it. But it needs to charge first Angry

So a quick question - the first of many...

Is there any point getting a newspaper app on it or will it be too small to have any point and I should just stick to reading the news on the web like BBC news?

Oh and do I need a cover? I'm guessing so as its generally shoved in my rather cruddy handbag. Recommendations?

no oneloves my desire...

I tell you this from the bottom of my heart. Get the cover. I dropped mine last week and smashed the screen It still works, but it now has a lovely corner of sellotape holding the damn thing together. I have never broken a phone before so I do think they're more delicate than they would have you believe. And you don't want to know how much I was quoted for a new screen Angry

Kewcumber · 04/05/2011 12:54

Tell me something fabulous to do with it...

OfflineFor30Seconds · 04/05/2011 13:08

I've had mine for a whole three weeks now, so I'm in no way an expert but I've put BBC, Sky News and the Telegraph on mine. You can see the pictures and writing fine. The Telegraph is a little slower to load though.

DH persuaded me to put Angry Birds on, despite me saying that I didn't like games, and now I'm addicted. I've accused him of being a pusher.

My top tip is - to create albums for photos, you have to connect your phone to your pc and create a folder and move the photos in manually. Well, I'm sure there are other ways, but it's taken me 3 weeks to figure that ou.

Kewcumber · 04/05/2011 13:17

angrybrds? Will I regret loking for that?

Do you get music on via PC as well.

Is the 4Gmicro SD card big enough to store a pile of photos on as well as music?

Once you've got Facebook and Angry Birds on it that's most of your spare time allocated. I'd also recommend Farm Frenzy and Abduction if you want to waste what little time you have left Grin

On a serious note... I use Dolphin as my browser as I find it easier the use than the standard browser. I also use Handcent as my text message app.

OmicronPersei8 · 04/05/2011 13:29

There are so many great things to get. I've been hooked on a game called alchemy recently, but there's also some great google apps, like google sky map, google goggles (a visual search tool). I use Opera mini for browsing, dropbox for saving files and photos and viewing them on my laptop and phone. My emails go straight to the phone (I got the googlemail and yahoo apps). There's a bbc widget so you get headlines straight to your phone. I also have a Guardian app which is good - it downloads in the middle of the night, so I can read it off-line too. I use 3g watchdog to check I don't go over my 3g limit - I never get close.

Umm, what else? Kindle - it synchronises where I've read up to with my kindle. Facebook and twitter work well. Ocado is better on the phone than online. Youtube is good for distracting the DC eg when waiting at the doctor's - we just watch pingu. The rotten tomatoes movie app is good too - reviews of latest films, times for your local cinemas.

I love my phone. Sad, but true. If only I knew where it was. Gah!

Gooseberrybushes · 04/05/2011 13:35

DON'T GET A SINGLE DROP OF LIQUID ON IT.

I mean, even be careful when it's in a coat pocket and it's raining and your coat is damp.

Kewcumber · 04/05/2011 13:39

is the guardian a paid for service?

Can;t really keep adding costs as I'd have to stop feeding DS

No liquid - check

I have 1g limit so hopefullt won;t go near it but will load watchdog anyway - in fact may do it now just to have something to do...

so I think I have downloaded some music but how do I find it on my phone? Blush

LoonyRationalist · 04/05/2011 14:31

Guardian Unlimited - fabulous & free

I love newsroom which is an RSS feed collator but also downloads them so you can read them off line

I recommended swiftkey too - so much better than the standard keyboard.

I found I wanted more than 4gb storage but depends how much music you want really.

I also recommend Alchemy but only if you have a spare 100 hours. I've only recently recovered from that addiction Hmm

silverfrog · 04/05/2011 14:37

oh, you really do need alchemy. as much as you need angry birds, if not more so.

do you want real, practical apps to use, or fun ones?

kindle a must.
google do all kinds of interesting apps - maps, obv, a sky map (essential for knowing the position of the constellations Hmm Grin )google navigation is handy someitmes, as is Google Places.

London journey is useful (if you ever go anywhere near London Grin) - plan out journey routes/times.

silverfrog · 04/05/2011 14:39

oh, and my htc has survived a year of being slung about, bunged in bags cover-less, given to small children to play angry birds on, squabbled (and slobbered!) over by small children and still lives to tell the tale...

but i might exercise more caution now having read this thread...

GooseyLoosey · 04/05/2011 14:40

Would also endorse the kindle app - its fab. I hate angry birds, but each to their own. Have Power Amp on mine for music and much better than what it came with.

If anyone has worked out how to create folders, can you share it with me?

instantfamily · 04/05/2011 14:48

I have C25K and kegel exercise apps. Great stuff.
And, dramatically, I am mning from my HTC.

Kewcumber · 04/05/2011 16:13

"do you want real, practical apps to use, or fun ones?"

Oh I want it all and I want it now

watfordmummy · 04/05/2011 16:18

I am getting a wildfire, am I going to regret not getting the desire? Can I still do all the lovely things mentioned above?

OfflineFor30Seconds · 04/05/2011 18:13

GooseyLoosey, for photos you have to connect your phone to the pc, then using Windows Explorer add a new folder to the phone (ie. directly under the main root (?) and not within any other existing folders).
Call the folder what you want and then transfer items into it.
You should see the folder next time you look in Gallery.

AlmightyCitrus · 04/05/2011 18:31

I've had my desire for a year now, and I still love it. I crocheted a cover for it, so no scratches yet.
It's great for keeping DS amused, although he is NOT ALLOWED to play any level of angry birds that I've not played yet! But I've got loads of games on there for him to play. I think there are more free apps than there are for the iphone. I know angry birds has always been free on android, but paid for on iphone.

I managed to read a couple books on it, there are some free apps with books but I've got a kindle now, so don't bother.

Tis a fab phone! Enjoy!

JarethTheGoblinKing · 04/05/2011 18:34

Astrid is a great free app for organising things (I find it much easier than the calendar).

The trainline app is handy (and free)

will be back later with more suggestions.

ruddynorah · 04/05/2011 18:37

Sky plus app so you can record if you forget when you're out and about.

HauntedLittleLunatic · 04/05/2011 18:42

I have a desire HD (replacement for my broken Desire)

The apps which I love

Sky+
Alchemy
Angry birds
Angry birds seasons
Angry birds Rio
250+ solitaire
TasKiller
Lookout (anti-virus)

upahill · 04/05/2011 18:47

Angry Birds is so last week!!
Airport Mania, that's what you need!!

Calvin and Hobbs cartoon strip, you get a new one everyday ( well they are old because they are from the books IYSWIM!)

ruddynorah · 04/05/2011 18:52

I don't have a cover. Mine rattles about in my hag fine. Dd aged 4 plays games on it. Ds aged 1.6 sucks it. It's still fine.
