Now bookbook has sadly left us, and stirred into action by @DobbleDobble, I think it’s time to start a general thread for those of us who try to grow edible produce, fruit, veg, herbs, to share successes, failures, questions and answers

Thank you. Yeah might be a little bit late for this season but only decided it this week

Thank you. Yeah might be a little bit late for this season but only decided it this week

It's only late ish for peppers, toms, chillies and aubergines! Everything else is perfect!

CaveMum · 24/04/2022 11:28

A productive morning here! Spent ages digging out my beds to try and remove as much bindweed root as possible and then planted out our seed potatoes - first attempt this year!

The bindweed was strangely satisfying to pull out like you said @TheSpottedZebra !

Joining in, I'm not new to growing (balcony) but have a garden for the first time in forever! The soil is all clay and stones, and will need a lot of organic matter - the wormery is working on it. I also have a housemate who likes to dig...for no real reason... been trying to make him read about no-dig gardening and mulching, with little success. Shall be sharing some Charles Dowding videos.

I'll be growing all the edible physalises (the orange 'pineapple' berry and 2 types of tomatillo/miltomate) - I looove salsa verde. About 5-6 chillies and tomatoes varieties (each) are on the way. I'm new to flowers from seed, planted lots of bulbs in the autumn! Big fan of James Wong and growing unusual things. Hoping to grow feijoa (South American, but big in NZ) and saltwort/agretti (a bit like samphire).

@EasterIssland I got my seeds from Nicky's Nursery and Just Seed - very budget-friendly, I'm not bothered about organic or 'heritage' though. Also from two seeds swaps (a bit late for that - look out for them in Dec, Jan, Feb).

JustKeepSw1mming · 24/04/2022 13:32

Ooooo feijoa, yum! Would love to know if you get any fruits! Where are you roughly?

Agapornis · 24/04/2022 13:42

London, with a sheltered sunny spot, fingers crossed! I've only bought seeds, not sure I have years of patience in my, considering a tree...

Deline · 24/04/2022 17:46

Hello, can a new kid on the block join this corner of MN, please?

I've just made a cuppa and am now going to settle down and read all 523 posts in this thread to catch up 🤓

DobbleDobble · 24/04/2022 18:21

Hi everyone
getting excited about the lot, radishes, lettuces and onion seeds all up, peas and potatoes poking through too.
think will have to cheat and buy some plug plants soon though as I’ve lost most of my cucumbers and broccoli shoots from frosts in greenhouse, barely any sweetcorn too.
been watering most nights as it’s really dry up there .
I’ve been given a shed, am going to open up both ends of it with windows and use as a kind of potting shed/cold frame an shelter type thing. Hope you are all enjoying seedling success ?!

PoseyFlump · 24/04/2022 19:17

My chillies (that are still indoors) are flowering! Think that's beat last year, will need to look at my notes.

shreddednips · 24/04/2022 22:38

May I join? Haven't had the chance to grow veg for a long time but we've finally got the garden sorted. Courgettes and tomatoes are coming along nicely and got some beautiful rainbow chard on the go as well.

Apologies if others have already mentioned this but as people were discussing where to get seeds- I get mine from More Veg, it's absolutely brilliant because the packet sizes are smaller if you don't want loads of seeds. Very affordable too, hopefully my link will attach!

DobbleDobble · 25/04/2022 15:32

Has anyone grown butternut squash , specifically Butterbaby? Was on gardeners world as being a compact variety so thinking of giving a go.I assume I can grow it up a support ?

garlicandsapphires · 25/04/2022 16:59

Can anyone recommend a good tomato variety to grow? There are so many to choose from and I’ve limited space to have them all.

tizwozliz · 25/04/2022 18:02

@garlicandsapphires - sungold was the variety recommended to me on these threads a few years ago and I always do them every year now.

Noodlekugel · 25/04/2022 18:46

Thanks for that link @shreddednips. The black cherry tomatoes look good.

The website says to sow indoors 6-8 weeks before last frost. I've missed that (SE England). Can I fast track them somehow? Or sow them straight outside? I haven't got a cold frame or greenhouse - just windowsills or garden.

I initially wanted the 'house tomatoes' from Real Seeds but they have sold out.

Tomato tips for a newbie welcome!

Lovemusic33 · 25/04/2022 19:09

Has anyone noticed an increase in their berries this year? My blueberry, pink currant and gooseberry seem to be going crazy this year, usually I don’t get much out of them but they are covered in flowers and fruit starting to form. I have started netting them in hope to stop the birds getting any, the blackcurrant and red currents seem to be a few weeks behind and are just starting to flower.

I put my peas out 2 days ago and have been watching them hoping the pigeons don’t eat them, so far so good. Potatoes are showing as are the carrots and spring onions. Other than the lettuce everything seems to be doing well this year, hoping it will be more successful than previous years.

notsogreenthumb · 25/04/2022 19:29

Test Hmm

notsogreenthumb · 25/04/2022 19:32

Jheez I can finally post after being unable to for the last week or so. No idea why!

A pesky fox entered my greenhouse and damaged my poor seedlings. I'm not sure how they'll fare now.

How are everyone's tomatoes? Usually mine are a foot long by now but this year they're barely a few inches high. ConfusedBlush. I sowed everything earlier this year too, my aubergines are just coming through as are my peppers. Only my pumpkin and courgette seem to be on course Sad.

valerianaofficiana · 25/04/2022 19:44

My tomatoes are sub-standard as well, couple of inches at max. Most disappointing as started early this year. No peppers, I'm clearly unable to germinate the buggers. 😩.
Aubergines are doing ok which is nice. Have Viola or Violeta, from Franchi seeds, excellent crop last year!
Couple of my smaller rhododendrons are dying, drying up and turning brown. What could be the matter?

notsogreenthumb · 25/04/2022 20:18

Do you think it was the cold snap a few weeks ago @valerianaofficiana, I noticed my rhododendrons do the same after that, I removed a few of the brown heads and am slowly trying to nurse them back to health.

catwomando · 25/04/2022 20:54

My tommies are rubbish and about 5cm high with only 1 set of true leaves. Aubergines only on seed leaves. Can't get peppers to germinate at all. Peas and beans just coming through.

We have a badger in our garden who keeps digging things up 😬

PoseyFlump · 25/04/2022 21:19

I initially wanted the 'house tomatoes' from Real Seeds but they have sold out.

I'm growing some of those at the moment. The seedlings are well formed miniature versions and cute things. I'll keep you posted how well they grow @Noodlekugel

PoseyFlump · 25/04/2022 21:22

I've never grown aubergine before. My seedlings are about the same size as my tomatoes at the moment. I didn't know they have spikes growing on them!

DobbleDobble · 25/04/2022 21:39

My tomatoes are only just we quarter inch and some cherry haven’t germinated at all.

MrsBigTed · 25/04/2022 23:05

@PoseyFlump I have 10ish house tomatoes seeds left, from last year. I saved some seeds and used those this year - I'd be happy to send them to you to try. If you'd like?
