Things like that probably take a long time to start and stop .

Sweetpea1532 · 07/10/2021 05:01

Thank you all for your condolences for my poor palm tree🌴 ...it still has roots, so I've replanted it...fingers crossed..but I really don't have too much hope....the Canary Island Palms are very hard to find now..not sure why...I'm hoping I can locate one so I can plant a new one..this time I will loosely wrap chicken wire around it..ha! The squirrels will probably gnaw right through it...as AK has said..."SPs is the best restaurant in town" with hearts of palm on the menu nowHmm..
Ohh, the oil spill is a big fat mess...Huntington Beach is one of the areas most affected as it is an extra sensitive wildlife sanctuary....😭
I'm thinking it probably happened because crews on the container ships are under so much stress with not being able to get docked and unloaded since there are so few Dock workers ...it is really sad to see the ships just floating off coast for weeks now.
On a happier note, I was able to rescue a few more plants from that ole rack of redemption in my quest for a new palm..
I'll post some photos when I get them in the groundFlowers

👍🏻♥️

Robin233 · 07/10/2021 07:42

@Sweetpea1532
Us the doc worker shortage due to covid?
My plant order back in August, it turns out is late due to floods across Europe and staff shortages.

Sweetpea1532 · 09/10/2021 01:46

@Robin233
Nobody is quite sure what is actually causing the back up...there is definitely a shortage of Dock workers and truck drivers because of covid.
I'm sorry your plants have been delayed...it seems that there are going to be lots of backups for awhile😦

Sweetpea1532 · 09/10/2021 01:50

Dahlias have been spectacular this year, with sweet peas in similar shades
My young fig tree has produced its first ever fruit! Unfortunately only a third was pink inside, the rest was white like the skin - but delicious

I love the rich colours @30kgtogo

applecatchers36 · 09/10/2021 16:03

Those dahlias are sublime! Is the dark one black jack? Enjoy the figs 30kgtogo

Robin233 · 10/10/2021 11:19

@30kgtogo
You are having more success than me with your fig tree.
Each year mine looks great till about July.
Then it looses all its leaves and small figs appear.
This time new leaves have started to appear.
It was a rescue plant and I'm pretty sure it's pot bound.

Thanks for the lovely comments!

I carefully labelled the dahlias, but all labels have now gone missing - either our lovely Labrador, wildlife or watering?!

The dark one is Rip City. The brighter is actually a purple - Thomas A Edison - and been so productive. I’ve had to give them away, as I’ve run out of vases!
Good flowers (but fewer) of Drama Queen, Perch Hill, Islander and Labyrinth.
I am now addicted to dahlias! Tried in pots before, and no success - think just not enough room/water/food. That really warm spell we had with rain in September brought them on fantastically.

@Robin233, 1 fig only in its first 2 years….mine is also in a pot, apparently they need to be root restricted to bear fruit?
They seem to need lots of water as well as sun.

Robin233 · 12/10/2021 04:11

Self seeded.

Beautiful photos everyone ❤
Thanks for sharing.
@Robin233 isn't it strange how plants will self-seed themselves and grow beautifully, but if we TRIED to plant a seed there, it would be a no-go...
I've never had ANY success with trying to grow from seed...

Look what decided to plant itself and grow and grow for at least 4 months with delicious fruit and no staking...a cherry tomato! It is stretched out over 2 metres under my passionfruit vines with only a wee bit of sun . It is also stretched out in the other direction 🙄. Over here we call self sèeded plants :volunteers:" I guess that's why they are so happy where they've put themselvesSmile

I'd forgotten that I've figured out a new use for the 10 billion face masks that I purchased...they are great for supporting trailing volunteer tomato vines Grin
(that's what the white thing is in the photo) also, my grape-gathering lady statue's head has been discovered by the tomato vine to make an excellent support structure.

Robin233 · 15/10/2021 01:09

Planted in some hellebores- white flowers and some Hebe yesterday.
Also found the right pot for my new peace lily.
As an experiment I've set 7 narcissist bulbs in a large glass vase on a bed of pebbles in water.

Your peace lily looks rather perky..it must be happy in its new home
It will be interesting to see how your bulb/pebble experiment turns outFlowers
