I'm hoping to do a little wildlife meadow at some point, can anyone offer any advice with planting? I've become a bit obsessed with buying new plants and seem to pick a new one up everywhere I go 🙈

Containergardener · 20/07/2021 21:08

Sorry @beautyisfoundwithin for the floods, and hope friends and family are ok. Great lily photos.

@LemonViolet those are fantastic

Love the bee hotel! @ImprobablePuffin

My husband and boys planted gladlioli bulbs back in spring and we've had these green sprouts for age which finally flowered today. Plus our wildflowers which are a bit too wild too wild!

Also loving all the roses, I bought a hybrid tea this year but it suffered mildew so I chopped it back and looking healthy now but I think I'll be waiting until next year for flowers.

ImprobablePuffin · 21/07/2021 01:32

@LemonViolet

Sorry - THIS is!!!
That's beautiful, I also have a taiga but the ants started aphid farming all the way up it so it's not doing too well.

My Claire Austin flowered today which I'm quite chuffed with.
And my new Bastilbe (sp?)

My Mum used to get them in Woolworths !

@AnneKipanki
I miss good ole Woolworths...you could buy just about anything there...my mum told me just yesterday that back in 1958 she bought some purple curtains from Woolworths that she thought were so classy😂
No wonder purple is one of my favourite colour of flowers Grin

beautyisfoundwithin · 21/07/2021 16:28

Gorgeous Gladioli @Containergardener, one of my absolute favourites but no matter how hard I try to grow them they only ever grow lots of leaves but never any flowers at all.

Lovely @ImprobablePuffin, regarding the spelling, could it be Astilbe, rather than Bastilbe? I'm no expert though so I may well be wrong! 😁 Either way I love the colour!

Beautiful Buddleia @AnneKipanki, mine is way behind yours.

I've no advice I'm afraid @popgoesperfection, every time I've tried myself everything gets completely destroyed by slugs 😫

I've got some Mallows blooming which I'm really pleased with as they were cheap seeds I picked up at the supermarket, I didn't actually know what they were I just liked the picture on the packet but they've turned out nicer than I thought they would! Also my first California Poppy is out.

Had lots of butterflies in the garden today too, managed to get a photo of one on my Lavender.

I'm so happy your garden has survived all the rain!!! It's even thriving, it appears...and that gorgeous butterfly looks so happy to have found your lavenderSmile

@AnneKipanki I need some buddleia lessons..mine is mightily struggling Blush

AnneKipanki · 21/07/2021 18:34

Probably lack of water @Sweetpea1532. It droops if it does not get enough.

OP posts:
Sweetpea1532 · 21/07/2021 18:53

@AnneKipanki
That's it! Unfortunately, mine has gone way beyond droopy and now is crispy.
I'm not giving up on it though...since I frequent the shelf of death and doom at the garden centre I'm going to work diligently on its recovery..I've put pieces of slate over the soil because it is good as a mulching ...I have a sneaky suspicion that buddleia are NOT meant for our coastal desert climate unless watered on a daily basis...they grow like weeds in the Southeast...my son has 3 that are at least 5 metres tall because they've turned into trees Shock

I have seen them growing on walls here .

beautyisfoundwithin · 21/07/2021 19:10

Mine can't really get any bigger as I bought it small and it always gets crushed from the weight of the snow each winter, it flowers well but has to grow all over again every year...

I have faith in you @Sweetpea1532! I'm sure you can manage to nurse it back to health!

Sweetpea1532 · 21/07/2021 19:25

@beautyisfoundwithin
What an enthusiastic cheerleader you are😂
Hopefully I won't let you down Grin

LemonViolet · 21/07/2021 21:16

Ooh lovely @beautyisfoundwithin, love those colours.

I’ve just done a dusk watering of my garden, and it’s really pleasant out here. Could do without neighbour swearing at his dogs and the one the other side of him seem to have about 8 million children in a paddling pool still at this time, but, can’t have everything. This is why I prefer mornings, no one else is up!!!

Just snapped this, unknown rose that was already here when I moved in. Debating whether it gets to stay or not, I am not a pale pink fan, but this is just interesting enough for me that I haven’t culled it immediately and am living with it for a while to see how I feel!

Does anyone know what this is?
My sister gave it to me tonight as she's not really got a garden.

It was my great nans and it's 36 years old, we think it's a bonsi tree.

Sweetpea1532 · 21/07/2021 21:53

@StrawberryFizz26
I dont know what the little tree from your nan could be but it's adorable and does appear to be something that at one time was a bonsai tree...maybe goggle it...bonsai trees can be very expensive..you might be sitting on a gold mineGrin
A bonsai site can also tell you how to trim it a bit
I love that you are in ❤ with your🌹

StrawberryFizz26 · 21/07/2021 21:57

sweetpea1532

I'm off to Google it, haha!
I'm now sure whether to plant it in my borders or leave it in the pot?

It's my first rose on 2 bushes I planted at Easter, there is 1 more bud so far and I just love watching the journey.

This is my first time of having plants so I'm now a crazy dog, cat and plant lady Grin

Sweetpea1532 · 21/07/2021 22:31

@StrawberryFizz26
You have found your people!Grin
Welcome!
Good luck with the bonsai...at a later time, would you please post a close-up of the flowers on it?

Sweetpea1532 · 21/07/2021 22:40

@StrawberryFizz26
There are very kind people on this thread...the OP, AnneKipanki is very good about starting another thread when one gets to 1000! We are on #4 already.
It's fun getting to enjoy MNETTERS gardens from around the worldSmileFlowers

I posted on the 3rd thread and annekipanki was very nice. I love her name!

I'll absolutely take a close up for you.

I've had 3 borders put in the garden, 1 is lavender, blue blossom and wild flowers.

The other 2 are all different perennials.

These pics are from a few weeks ago, wild flowers and the one by the frescha have been battered by the rain.

I'll post updated ones tomorrow.
