So sorry to hear this @beautyisfoundwithin. We had torrential rain in London earlier in the week and it was terrifying how quickly the water built up. And that was nothing compared with what you and others are going through. So sorry.

Sweetpea1532 · 18/07/2021 19:10

@WobblyLondoner
Your little dahlias are so cute..I only know the larger varieties...they kind of look similar to what we call " bachelor buttons" ( I think yall call them cornflowers,)
That front area sounds interesting and will be very beautiful with some colour..I think violas like heat as they do well here and also lobelia...I like Cambridge blue..the trailing variety...what a serendipity to have irrigation already in...looking forward to your photos Smile

WobblyLondoner · 18/07/2021 19:48

Thanks @Sweetpea1532 will post when d as one thing to show!

The dahlias aren't that small I don't think (as dahlias go) - about 12-15cm across for each flower. They are fantastic though I think. Very punky...

Sweetpea1532 · 18/07/2021 20:22

@WobblyLondoner

Maybe all the other photos I saw of dahlias were 'close-ups"😂

Sweetpea1532 · 18/07/2021 20:23

But 12-15 cm is very large to me, too! That must be a gorgeous display IRL!

AnneKipanki · 19/07/2021 06:52

Sorry to hear about your town @beautyisfoundwithin.

Hope things recover in your town as smoothly as possible @beautyisfoundwithin

Love that purple cactus dahlia @WobblyLondoner. I will be looking to add dahlias next year, when hopefully more of the garden will be ready for planting. Do you know the name of it?

Here is my contribution for the day, Tibouchina urvilleana, or “glory bush” (although mine is a fairly small potted plant at the moment!!) a little bit of leaf burn but the flowers are gorgeous. It was a spontaneous purchase at my favourite nursery a few months ago, never heard of it before that.

Beautiful rose Tonton and unusual cactus dahlias Wobbly love the bright purple!

WobblyLondoner · 19/07/2021 20:45

Thanks all. @LemonViolet it is called purple gem - more here: www.rhsplants.co.uk/plants/_/dahlia-purple-gem/classid.2000002182/

I've tried a few dahlias and this is the only one I've stuck with (aka not killed). It's great.

TonTonMacoute · 19/07/2021 20:51

I am dabbling with dahlias for the first time this year but, man alive, the slugs! Shock

Some are doing quite well, some have been munched to total oblivion. None flowering yet. It's been such a strange year, we literally didn't have May.

My DDad rang this morning to say his garden is looking lovely and I must pop by sometime to look at it. I still marvel at how wonderful it is for the soul to share our gardens.

AnneKipanki · 19/07/2021 21:39

We have a lot of snails .

Today I made a little fenced area and planted it up using mixed salvias, I moved my buddleias and there's also an allium and a lovely bushy one I forget the name of. So I have a lovely view from my arbour now. I'm quite chuffed with it as I'm very much a beginner.
Other picture is a bee who moved in to my bee hotel today and used my wisteria leaves to make his little home

@LemonViolet

Ooh that’s a really lovely hydrangea bettyfloormop what variety is it?

I’m not as into the current vogue for hydrangeas as most people seem to be, mainly because I am very fussy about pink and really don’t like any pale/baby pinks at all and much prefer stronger/brighter colours full stop. But that deep blue and violet is gorgeous. I know it’s a pH/soil issue…..I wonder if you can keep blue hydrangeas blue with the right mix in a container and the right specialist feed?

Have you seen the glam rock hydrangeas? That could be the hydrangea for you?!

That’s a lovely little area @ImprobablePuffin, I like it. And a happy bee! I must get a bee hotel. Must feel so nice to know you have a happy guest staying there :-)

This is the first proper flower on my clematis Taiga, next to an unnamed osteospermum.

Thanks all. I'm very fortunate that I wasn't personally affected, there is lots of water damage but also the torrential rain caused landslides down from the mountains and sadly many people's homes were completely destroyed by them.

Great Dahlia @WobblyLondoner! Worth the wait after the trouble you had trying to post it. So many blooms and buds on it!

Same trouble here @TonTonMacoute, the slugs have just decimated my Dahlias 😡 Beautiful Rose.

What a lovely new area @ImprobablePuffin.

Wow! Very exotic looking @LemonViolet!

The rain has now stopped and we even had some sunshine today. Some more of my Lilies have opened up.
