Just a little fourward planning . We are all looking forward to another thread of fabulous pictures. It can be a quiet time but I am sure some of us will have autumnal colours to share . The trees are starting to turn here . I have just picked an allium from my photo collection to start the thread off .
You are very welcome to finish or visit the old thread . I do not know how to do ... this is the old thread here thing .

Allison that is SUCH a pretty rose, really simple and lovely 😊.

Thanks for the information on tulip planting! I'm planting mine out tomorrow. I have Concerto which is a dwarf, pale lemon and Apricot Beauty which is about 4" taller. I can't decide whether to plant them in the garden or in pots.

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 22/09/2020 11:04

Have you enough to do both; in pots and in the ground? @catwithflowers Although I think I have a slight preference for pots of tulips.

That Clematis is incredible @ALLIS0N

My roses have loved the September sunshine.

I’m a bulb novice but have bought tulips, any recommendations for a good soil?

ALLIS0N · 22/09/2020 11:49

Thank you for your kind comments. I do prefer single and semi double roses but they can be hard to find as a repeat flowerer.

@SBTLove - how’s your draining ? Most of them need good drainage ( unlike my garden ).

SBTLove · 22/09/2020 11:52

Rubbish, very heavy and the field behind slopes down to our fence, I think it will need to be tubs. Tried in the ground before and out of 30 only 2 came up 😔

ALLIS0N · 22/09/2020 12:00

Camassias will cope with heavy damp clay.

ALLIS0N · 22/09/2020 12:02

Do you have any big deciduous trees? It will be drier around the trunk and you could plant small early spring bulbs like crocus and snowdrops.

AnneKipanki · 22/09/2020 13:01

Very profuse @AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet .

@ALLIS0N
My previous failed attempt was under a mountain ash tree 😔

AnneKipanki · 23/09/2020 17:21

Here is a side and close up view of the clematis. It is very complex .

It's a stunning Clematis.

And in late September, lucky you Smile

catwithflowers · 24/09/2020 06:48

Really lovely flower Anne 😊

Well the weather really turned here yesterday. It was pretty chilly, around 9 degrees and poured down all day. Am hoping for some sun today as I want to get my tulips planted 🌷

catwithflowers · 24/09/2020 09:35

For anyone about to plant tulip bulbs in pots, I've just received the latest Gardeners' World edition which has a big article all about it! Apparently you can plant the bulbs densely "if planting in a single layer, bulbs can be almost touching. You can fit up to 12 bulbs in a 30cm diameter pot". The author also recommends waiting until mid October when temperatures have dropped to reduce the risk of fungal disease.

Not sure what to do now 🙈. I was hoping to get mine in pots today. We are in the North East and it's getting chilly at night now. The greenhouse was 6 degrees this morning 🥶 What is everyone else doing? 🌷

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 24/09/2020 09:44

Oh that's good to know @catwithflowers The instructions on mine said to plant the bulbs 4 inches apart, so I wasn't able to fit that many in the pots. I have pots with dahlias in them, so I can use those pots in October and plant lots of tulip bulbs. I love Gardeners' world and would always follow their advice Smile
It's cold here too. My roses look like they are just about to repeat-bloom, I don't think they will now Sad

AnneKipanki · 24/09/2020 09:49

I don't usually do bulbs @catwithflowers . However thanks for that information. I might conspiring now.

Well ........ thinking back to all the comments about Cosmos ....... mine have just started to flower 🤣🤣. I planted the seeds in May!!! Now they are flowering with loads of buds still to come, just in time for the first frosts 🙈

The heleniums are looking splendid though, a real hit of colour now so many things are dying back. Roses still doing well though which is amazing as it's pretty chilly at night now

catwithflowers · 29/09/2020 07:57

Hmm pics not uploading 🤷‍♀️

Lovely @catwithflowers ! That is so annoying when plants do that .

All beautiful.
I'm definitely going to have white cosmos next year @catwithflowers They are so pretty! Although I buy all my flowers from garden centres. I think you're all amazing, growing things from seed Star

It has already frozen here at night, so I'm relieved everything is still surviving. Here's Gertrude Jekyll and geranium, just now. I never notice the insects on them when I'm taking the pictures!
GJ smells amazing. I can get the scent lingering through the air Smile

Lovely @AnneKipanki & @AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet!

Same here with my Cosmos @catwithflowers! Full of big fat buds after all this time!! 🤣 Hope they manage to survive the dropping temperatures and bloom. Had some very heavy freezing rain the other day which unfortunately snapped about a third of them in half. Fingers crossed for the survivors 🤞🏼 Love the Heleniums, so vibrant!

Most of my sunflowers have died off now, but I have a cute little teeny tiny one that's just opened up, it's literally 10 inches tall at most! 😂 Half of my Sweet Peas have now died off too, but I'm really happy that the rest are still going strong despite the cold nights. Sad to see lots of flowers dying off, but enjoying the colours that I've still got left.
