@GiantKitten (sorry for late reply)

Yes, I just sprinkle the seeds straight into the pots. Cover with cling film for a few weeks till they come through. Cover the pots with lattice of sticks to keep out neighbours cats/squirrels. Keep pulling out loads of seedlings as they get bigger and stronger to leave just enough to fill the pots.

@Elderflower14 Brill pics!

I had some fab plants from secret gardening club last week, out of all the ones I'd ordered online this year they were the healthiest and most well packaged I'd received by quite a long way.

I've been back to the garden centre this morning (Dad was killing some time while his car was in for it's MOT). Bought a pittosporum like this to fill a gap, whilst Dad bought enough garden lights for blackpool illuminations Wink. I think it might get a little too big TBH but we'll find out in a couple of years. The Hebe next to the gap is getting quite old so might end up getting ripped out at some point anyway.

Lovely photos elderflower and what a great hobby for your son. Is he able to frame the best ones?

GiantKitten · 10/07/2020 17:05

@BewareTheBeardedDragon

They're going in pots *@GiantKitten* and I'm wondering if I need to split them - I know supermarkets generally tend to stuff pots of plants to make them look full and appealing in the short term? I'm also wondering if I need to get some ericaceous compost or if general potting compost will suffice. Hmm. Going to have to buy some nice pots for them too. Clearly didn't think this bargain thing through

@Oldraver that looks beautiful, I am sorely tempted by a half price one from yougarden but I'm a bit suspicious of large online random garden places that discount heavily.

I imagine they’ll be single tubers, Dragon? Those can be divided, but only while dormant I think ( I read some dahlia stuff yesterday & have pretty much forgotten it already! Blush)

I think I’ll be planting my 2 over the weekend - might put them in a big pot together this year, but replant them separately next year if they make it through the winter.

Hadn’t thought of ericaceous, I’ve only used it ineffectually for hydrangeas (I don’t have any azaleas or camellias) - all I have in atm is varieties of John Innes & some supermarket multipurpose. I’d better do some more research (& make notes!) Grin

Stunning sweet pea @beautyisfoundwithin

Are they edible @AnneKipanki?

Congratulate your son @Elderflower14 those are amazing

@GiantKitten my research thus far seems inconclusive on the compost front. There is some off putting stuff about fertilising, which I'm never very good at. Hoping that nettle and comfrey tea will cut it, as it's all I have!

Oh bugger 🙄

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 10/07/2020 17:33

Ah, RHS do not say they need ericaceous, phew.

popgoesperfection · 10/07/2020 17:38

@Elderflower14 they're stunning! Especially like the first one, colour just pops! Here are some of my self set wall flowers.

Thank you, parrot!

Presumably with mixed seeds you can’t tell initially which seedlings you’re thinning? Pot luck?

I have got some spiky plastic mesh specifically to keep cats off which lies flat on the soil, so I could put that on top before they even start sprouting.

More fabulous photos today - Elderflower, your son’s bee pics are wonderful 😊

Beautiful pictures from your son @Elderflower14 .

I do not know if they are edible @BewareTheBeardedDragon . I was hoping someone on here might know. They are quite large. 4 inches across.

Thanks @BewareTheBeardedDragon. I'm pretty certain it's a Matucana, but I must admit I sowed so many seeds I kind of lost track of what was what when I planted them all out! It's my favourite colours and it smells divine.

Stunning photos @Elderflower14!

Good job with those wall flowers @popgoesperfection.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 10/07/2020 18:50

Love the wallflowers!

Bet your conservatory smells divine @BillywilliamV

Dd has just helped me pot up the dahlias, and a fuchsia that I bought along with the pots Blush

And a pic of my Himalayan honeysuckle, jasmine with its first ever flower and alpine strawberries beneath. All of which were free! Honeysuckle just popped up in a pot, and the jasmine and strawberries were an unwanted stick and rosette from my mums garden.
