Love the pond as plant pot. Beautiful aldi bargains - think I will go to non local aldi tomorrow since local one sadly has no plants.

I thought my squash plant had thrown up an impressive looking bloom today so I took some pics in the rain.

Monty Don was talking about Dahlias about 3 weeks ago. He said if you don't want to lift them, then they need to be planted deeper and then they can be left in the ground. I can't remember how deep though but you might find it on iPlayer.

Just been out in the rain de-snailing/slugging and noticed my penstemon has started flowering, i love the colour.

Lovely pictures everyone.
Horrendous rain here over the last few days.

It's been the same here Anne. It's the first time the sun has been out in days so I'm going to make the most of it and pot on my sunflowers and tomatoe plants.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 10/07/2020 11:27

Just got back with my Aldi bargains - thanks for the tip @GiantKitten SmileSmileSmile

Disappointed with the Lidl next door, which often has nice houseplants but today had nothing at all.

@BewareTheBeardedDragon Very pretty. 😊. Weather been pretty miserable here too for the last week or so. The odd burst of lovely sunshine but mostly cloudy and rainy.

I've just been out in the garden moving my white nicotiana plants. I grew them from seed and somehow I remembered these as being quite tall and slender, a bit like a campanula. I planted them in a smallish space and they have grown huge. 🙈 They look like cabbages with massive sprawling leaves. No flowers yet either! I've put them into a space in a mixed flower and shrub bed. They don't look quite right but I can't bear to throw them away. Might look nicer once they come into flower!!

catwithflowers · 10/07/2020 12:07

Definitely look like they belong in the veg plot 🤣🤣

Ooh, you got some, Dragon! Well done! Are those going in pots or the ground?

I was at Harlow Carr (RHS garden) yesterday and their garden centre was selling similar-sized dahlias for £10 😮

You do know the variety, & get RHS provenance, but still seems very dear - mind you their gift shop sells some things I’ve seen in NT shops, also with significantly higher prices than theirs...

I was quite tempted by some white & pink thunbergias but I still love the orange ones most.

(Some pics attached. I adore the huge terracotta pots but a couple of those would pretty much fill my yard Grin)

2020 is the year of the rudbeckia (who knew?) and there was a recently-planted massive bed of different varieties of those - with little plastic hand-written tags at the front of each row, how sweet - but none of them were out yet, unfortunately. I’m still hoping to get there on a warm sunny day at least once this year! Grin

Nice mix of leaf shapes @catwithflowers.

I think this may be the best picture I'll get of the globosa, it's looking a bit witty, and I think slugs have been at the stem making it droop

They're going in pots @GiantKitten and I'm wondering if I need to split them - I know supermarkets generally tend to stuff pots of plants to make them look full and appealing in the short term? I'm also wondering if I need to get some ericaceous compost or if general potting compost will suffice. Hmm. Going to have to buy some nice pots for them too. Clearly didn't think this bargain thing through

@Oldraver that looks beautiful, I am sorely tempted by a half price one from yougarden but I'm a bit suspicious of large online random garden places that discount heavily.

That's an unusual and lovely coloured rose @Pieceofpurplesky

DDemelza · 10/07/2020 15:04

Love those colours, purplesky.

I had a good quality rose from yougarden this year, Beware. I was pleasantly surprised!

The feeder in my rowan tree this morning- and berries!

Beware Yougarden recently sent me some terrible plants, and they weren't even sale items. One was actually dead, and not recently deceased, it had not made any growth at all off its brown overwintered twigs, given it should have been leafy and full of buds I cannot fathom how they thought it a good idea to ship it. The other 3 plants were not great either. They refunded the dead one but they are just a churn-it-out business, not plant people.

Piece that is a nice blue/purple rose. Do you know which it is? I have rhapsody in Blue and Diamond Eyes

I know they are unfashionable but I was given 3 begonia tubers in March. They have really done well, even on a very windy balcony, they shrug off rain, the petals are not spoiled at all by being wet for days.

Lovely bed cat I agree with Anne, the nicotiana add to a pleasing mix of colour and texture.

Those are gorgeous terracotta pots Giant. I have the space but not the budget , sigh.

Oldraver · 10/07/2020 15:23

Oh not good on Youplant

I have seen both the Weyeriana/Globosa in my local garden centre for the first time

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 10/07/2020 15:25

Thanks for the tip noflora I'll avoid. I'm not actually ready for the buddleia so it's probably better.

Love the purple single roses - beautiful. And the begonias, fashion is worthless.

Harlow Carr looks amazing, I'd love to go one day.

catwithflowers · 10/07/2020 16:20

Can I just give a thumbs up for Sarah Raven? I've had lots of seeds delivered from there recently and today my order of small perennials arrived. Everything was really well packed and arrived strong and healthy. I'm really excited to see how they fare but have high hopes. Everything is already planted out in the garden 😊

I posted a free delivery code on another thread in the gardening topic. I've read of a few disappointments recently with online orders so I wanted to give praise where it's due! 🌱🌷

catwithflowers · 10/07/2020 16:21

@DDemelza what a gorgeous photo of the birds in your Rowan tree!

beautyisfoundwithin · 10/07/2020 16:25

I wish the Aldis over here had those bargain Dahlias! They're lovely. I do get quite a lot of plants from Aldi, but I've never seen Dahlias in there.

That Globosa is lovely @Oldraver.

@Noflora those Begonias look great. I bought some tubers this year as they were reduced in the bargain bin 😁 but they're quite a way behind yours.

My first Sweet Pea flower has finally arrived, and I noticed a pretty little peachy coloured Nasturtium in amongst the orange and yellow ones.

I must be quite unfashionable as I love begonias 🙈 noflora, they are gorgeous, the colour is just wow!
