Boscobel is the one in the pic and Thomas Beckett

catwithflowers · 07/07/2020 17:17

Ooh, may have to investigate Boscobel! O idea where I would put another rose as I am also lusting after Desdemona 🙈. Where there's a will, there's a way Wink

My photos for today, the acanthus/bear's breeches which I love, so structural, some astrantia which is really delicate and unassuming, and the herb bed which we also planted with alyssum but it looks quite pretty and brings everything together.

No idea, obviously!

ditavonteesed · 08/07/2020 07:59

Clematis, a dwarf clematis that I got yesterday which I love it’s called little lemon and the rose I also picked up yesterday called pink blanket.

I was trying to work out how much money I have spent on plants this year and I actually cant, however everything is thriving so it was a good investment.

Thank you so much for this thread it gives me pleasure and inspiration every day.

You certainly did have a good garden day yesterday @ditavonteesed! Some lovely new plants, and I love your pot patio!

I've been inspired to have more groups of pots thanks to this thread.

That's great @Oldraver, at least it won't be wasted 😊

Noflora · 08/07/2020 13:19

I love having things in pots. Here are 3 of mine, all very large pots

Thanks for the thread Anne

ooh, I'm waiting for a Boscobel to be delivered, it looks lovely dita

That photo is lovely Oldraver, love the colours and composition

Your garden is fab cat, I love a copper beech hedge! I think the alyssum was a great idea

DDemelza · 08/07/2020 14:29

The colours are far brighter in real life.I love this Wine and Coburn thyme plant, a gift from my best friend, beside a dianthus. Also mallows and cornflower. I love annuals. All spectacle and beauty, fast and furious.

Noflora, those pink dahlias are exquisite. Where did you get them from?

Noflora · 08/07/2020 14:38

Thank you DDemelza. I bought the tuber years ago in a regular german supermarket, plant stuff is so much cheaper there. The colour is more purple in real life.

beautyisfoundwithin · 08/07/2020 18:07

Gorgeous Dahlia @Noflora! I normally have 2 just like that (also bought here in a German supermarket!) but with the weather and the slug attacks they are so far behind this year 😢

Speaking of German supermarkets, I couldn't resist these little plants when I was shopping today, they were only €1.49 each. Actually I think I was very restrained just buying three!

It was a REWE beauty and I would definitely have picked those colourful beauties up too.

GiantKitten · 08/07/2020 19:03
@GiantKitten Half of the flowers blooming in my pots came out of one of those mixed packets of seeds for 99p!
Shock

It’s never occurred to me to use seeds!
Do you germinate them in little pots indoors or just sprinkle them on big pots? (I don’t think I could do that, the cats would use bare compost as a litter tray Hmm)

GiantKitten · 08/07/2020 19:04

Oh that’s amazing! It isn’t rooting as well, is it? Could you replant it? (Disclaimer - I know nothing about growing buddleias!)

@Noflora, what do you do with your pot dahlias over the winter, please? I’ve just bought 2 today from Aldi - I’ve always left them out before & they’ve always died, if I could overwinter these I’d be thrilled!

(Pink one was very dry & is soaking in bucket)

I got my Dahlia tubers from a REWE too @Noflora! The colourful plants I picked up today were from a Penny.

Noflora · 08/07/2020 20:55

Giant Those are pretty and definitely worth saving. For little tubers I put them under cover as soon as they die down from a light frost so that they dry out. Then shake the soil off and put in a paper bag and keep in the (frost free) garage. They usually surprise me and start sprouting before I think to plant them again. My monster huge dahlia I pull the pot under cover and just let it dry out which takes forever. If I can be bothered I take it out of the soil and do as above. I admit last winter it stayed in the pot as it was until I was ready to prise it out and give it new soil this spring. But I don't think our under balcony area froze hard ever.

Thank you, Noflora Smile

These will certainly be little tubers this year!
So after a light frost they’ll go brown (?) & wilt - then I should first put their pots under cover (in the shed should do? It’s sheltered), then lift & bag the tubers once dry?

When should they be ready to go out again? And how deep should they be planted?

GiantKitten · 08/07/2020 21:14

(They were £2.49 each in Aldi btw. Bargainous, I thought Grin)

Noflora · 08/07/2020 21:26

Yup, get them dry asap and keep them frost free. Pot them up a short time before you expect frost to be over and start to water. Once the shoots are above ground they'll need to be in the light but the beauty of pots is you can bring them into a shed or porch if frost threatens. As to depth, they need a good covering but they need room underneath too so the pot might determine the depth, try to get 2 inches above the highest bit of tuber.

Brilliant, thank you, Noflora! Have got screenshots & will do my best. (I’m not generally v good at this stuff, I’ve neglected a few amaryllises to the point of death, but I’ll try Flowers)
