Another hollyhock lover here - though I completely associate these with balmy holidays in the sun. Like others mine just look a bit motley and sick, but, inspired by this thread, I shall try again. There is a plant nearby with stunning pink flowers - I may try and lurk there one day in the hope of seeing some seeds.

BlackeyedPetitsPois · 20/07/2020 19:00

New to this thread - loving all these beautiful photos!!

May I present my offering of my giant hydrangea bush. We inherited it when we moved in around 7 years ago and each year it comes bigger than the last, despite me thinking some years I’ve pruned it to death! I don’t feed it so perhaps just lucky!

Sunflower is only about 7ft, but is in a terraced bed on the slope at the end of the garden so clever camera angle makes it look taller - I'm full of cheats today

Lovely little onion relative?

Beautiful hydrangea @BlackeyedPetitsPois

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 20/07/2020 19:35

@BlackeyedPetitsPois I have no words Shock
Just... wow Shock

@popgoesperfection I hope mine will develop the strong purple colour like yours Smile

@BewareTheBeardedDragon Impressive sunflowers. And how lovely to stop and admire a Hydrangea Smile

popgoesperfection · 20/07/2020 19:53

Still 7ft is impressive !! Mine are quite small still but I sowed them late. The teddy bear ones are just starting to grow a flower head.
@AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet it feels like it has taken aaaggeess for it to flower!!!
Also some snapdragons hiding amongst the ginormous foxglove.

Love the teddy bear ones @popgoesperfection - last year I grew them and one of the flower heads was the size of a dinner plate! Do post pics when they open pls
Really love bicoloured snapdragons

Beautiful roses @LuluJakey1

@AnneKipanki well this sunflower is certainly lucky for me, and lucky for it that I waited to find out what it was before weeding it out. Grin It self sowed from the F1 hybrids growing in that bed last year. It has fought off the slugs and evaded whichever rodent keeps digging there, and it is just one plant with a massively thick stem (nearly a trunk now) that has developed a perfect round of multiple flower heads on smaller stems so that it looks like a giant flower bouquet/vase in the garden now (the parent plants were not like this, though they had the same petal colouration). ☘️☘️☘️😊

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 20/07/2020 20:23

Beautiful pics everybody Smile

Todays photos from me are some of my pots, fuchsias and dahlias... I've had to raise them up a little as the fuchsias have reached the floor now (bad planning on my part) Wink

Definitely will do @BewareTheBeardedDragon. Your sunflower 'bunch' sounds amazing and gorgeous !! I did plant a couple of young ones in the ground but slugs are them 😤
That's a lovely arrangement @RaptorInaPorkPieHat of colours and plant type!

BlackeyedPetitsPois · 20/07/2020 20:59

Thank you @popgoesperfection, @BewareTheBeardedDragon, @AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet, @AnneKipanki.

It is a beast! Spectacular for cut flowers too but tend to drop little bits.

LuluJakey1 · 20/07/2020 21:05

@AnneKipanki It is called 'Gentle Hermione' and is a David Austin rose.

I don't know what this one is because it was here when we moved in but it is covered in these big blowsy pink flowers that smell gorgeous and fade to pale pink- flowers from June to October.

And the other one is a hydrangea that fades to a dusty pink and dries beautifully in September.

Anne,I know, right?Grin

DD, thank you! I'm glad to hear there is another rock enthusiast in the MN world. My DH does contribute quite a bit to my rock collection....whenever he goes on a road trip, he always brings we back a boot load of them....decimates his petrol milage, but he's happy to bring me home as many as he can. I have started labelling them as to their place of origin.

ALWAYS, I've never seen giant allium. They are spectacular!!! I'm off to order some for Fall planting as I read that they are drought tolerant. Thank you for introducing me to themSmileFlowers

Morning MN, can anyway give me some advice. A cat has had hold of a baby bird in my garden, the bird is injured and can't seem to fly, it was just sat in the middle of the grass. I went out to pick it up to put In a box to save it but it hopped under the decking, now I can't reach it. I've left the box out on its side and filled it with bedding, seed, berries and water in the hope that it will hop in and I can rescue it. Is there anything else I could try?

beautyisfoundwithin · 21/07/2020 09:00

Wow! What with those Sunflowers, Allium, and that Hydrangea there's definitely a giant theme here! Very impressive.

@Sweetpea1532 I love that your DH does that! And great idea to label them. I have a small rock garden/rockery area that's still in development (nothing like yours!). Would you by any chance have a recommendation for a plant that is drought tolerant but also doesn't require much sun, for a dry, shady spot in the rockery?

AnneKipanki · 21/07/2020 09:35

Not sure @popgoesperfection , sorry.

RaptorInaPorkPieHat · 21/07/2020 12:40

Hopefully it'll recover now it's found somewhere dark and safe to hide Pop Sad we often get birds flying into our windows (we have the reflective stickers which has helped) and they often sit there for a bit looking dazed and then fly off (obviously it's a little different from being bit by a cat though).

Next doors cat caught a mouse this morning (he is holidaying with us currently as they're away), little sod was very proud of it too Wink

We've been to the garden centre today (can you tell it's pay day!) rescued a poppy from the reduced section (which was CRAMMED with Hydrangeas - which I just don't have room for) and bought some solar lights for the pots.

We measured the largest sunflower a couple of days ago, it is edging towards 10ft which for us is quite spectacular Smile I'll have to take a photo later (for proof!)

Phineasthegreat · 21/07/2020 13:00

This is a truly lovely thread. I’m hoping it’s ok if I join in?

Here is a climbing rose, hydrangea (because that seems to be the theme) and an oleander that is smelling very sweet right now

I just feel so sorry for the poor little thing Sad I know it's a fact of life but it still seems cruel.
Wow that is a giant sunflower raptor, can't wait to see the pic Smile
Hi phineas, that's climber is a beauty, I've got my eye on a similar one.
