Thanks @AnneKipanki I am much more proud of the garden than it warrants because I started with this (pic attached)

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 28/04/2020 09:02

knitpicker those displays are so full of charm and character Smile

@Taytocrisps Thank you for your lovely compliments, although there's a camellia in there too, feeling rather perturbed that it didn't receive the same level of praise, envy and awe Wink
I'm joking 😂
They are all beautiful, and yes, it is so lovely to see the order of emerging blooms, and watch out for what's next Smile

@HappyShoes If you want to grow climbers how about putting an obelisk/trellis inside a planter that you position up against the fence? You can then have the vertical planting to break up the expanse of fence panels without having something growing up the fence.

The fence itself faces south, doesn't it? Clematis armandii is an evergreen climber with lovely glossy oval leaves, and gorgeous white flowers in early spring. It can get pretty big once established so you might want a large planter and trellis, and keep the base of the plant cool by shading it from the sun.

I'm not very knowledgeable about roses, but again I'm sure you could grow those in the same way to give some summer colour and fragrance - look at David Austin online for some ideas.

What a transformation already!

AnneKipanki · 28/04/2020 22:08

I agree.
That is a very good suggestion about the separate trellis from @EnormousSexyCrimeUnit .
It is looking better already.

Taytocrisps · 30/04/2020 22:24

@Happyshoes what have you planted so far? I can't quite see from the picture.

Happyshoes · 30/04/2020 22:44

Taytocrisps
Hebe. Fuchsias, azalea, lavender, rhododendron, I have fern yet to pot & surfinia for baskets. I have also put 2 bird feeders up. Next on my list is climber. Which I never thought would ever happen x

Taytocrisps · 30/04/2020 22:58

Ah, lovely.

Crazzzycat · 02/05/2020 01:42

I’m SO excited that some of my roses have started flowering, I thought I’d share a few pictures here.

Also, I’m just in love with this clematis (Nelly Mosser). It’s been in the ground for a couple of years now, but this year it looks like it’s really going for it ☺️

Hi everyone I’ve just discovered this thread, it’s fab! All your gardens and followers are stunning. We have just moved into a new build so I currently have a green lawn with absolutely nothing in it. Great starting point I suppose. It’s not huge it I adore peonies so that first for me when the garden centres open around here.

Happyshoes · 02/05/2020 12:30

Crazzzycat
Stunning

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 02/05/2020 22:11

@Mixitupalot A blank canvas, how exciting! Smile
Quite a few of us adore Peonies, they've been mentioned on a few threads. They were featured on Gardeners' world a few weeks ago. Somebody said that they were in Lidl last Thursday, if you have one nearby?

My Lewisia today. I hope name/spelling is correct. I'm having an XXXXL glass of Wine

Gorgeous Lewisia @AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet I’ve not come across that one before, so no idea if it’s spelt correctly or not 😁

@Mixitupalot we also started with a garden that was just grass. In a way it is nice to have a blank canvas, but turning grass into a flowerbed does come with its own challenges.

Just digging it up doesn’t seem to be enough to get rid of it and digging up the soil will also bring all the weed seeds that are buried in the soil to the surface, creating a weedy mess in no time.

We found that the best way around this was to cover the grass with cardboard and put a layer of mulch on the top. Over time the cardboard will kill off the grass, and as cardboard breaks down you’re not stuck with a permanent impenetrable layer. The mulch is just there for decorative effect and to keep the cardboard in place, but it’s not essential.

If you have some stuff you want to plant now you can do that by simply making a hole in your cardboard. Also remember that soil under grass can be a bit low in nutrients, so don’t shy away from using a bit of fertiliser once you start planting.

Phew, that was long! 😅

Crazzzycat · 03/05/2020 12:50

Some pictures from my garden today; here’s my lovely dwarf Lilac, that’s currently in full flower and fills the whole garden with the most magnificent scent.

Also featuring are a few of my aquallegias. I don’t remember ever planting any of them, but they’re the star of my garden this week 😁

@Crazzzycat wow thanks that’s fantastic advice, ott try that this week. We’ve decided to start building a patio area this week & then go from there.

I got some sunflower seeds delivered yesterday, simple & kid friendly!

Crazzzycat · 03/05/2020 13:39

You’re very welcome @Mixitupalot We spent years trying to battle the grass, but that cardboard truck changed our lives 😁

I’m loving your tulips @wonkylegs Gorgeous colours!

Crazzzycat · 03/05/2020 13:40

trick, not truck! 😂

Miaowse · 06/05/2020 17:24

I stumbled on this thread a while ago and love seeing all the gorgeous plants and gardens. I know v little about gardening, but I thought I should share some colour from my garden too.

Top row: tulip (possibly angelique), azalea, rosemary in bloom.
Bottom row: euphorbia (?), apple blossom, an allium (?)
