Ok, I've started another thread under Chat - MN Village Fete

Putting forward the suggestion, and asking for ideas. Let's see what everyone thinks!

Debbiethemum · 03/07/2006 18:01

I am experimenting this year as I am growing my cherry tomatoes in a hanging basket - present from my mum, masses of flowers & quite a few very small green tomatoes.
The best thing is you are told not to pinch them out, just let them grow wild.
Will let you know in a few more weeks if it actually works

iota · 03/07/2006 18:15

sound good Debbie - but with cherry tomatoes, you will be unlikely to join the contest between myself and ks for who's got the biggest one

No, but can we have a subdivision of the most tomatoes on one plant !!! At least I could enter that one

iota · 03/07/2006 19:40

are you quite sure that you didin't have a finger under the tape measure, ks?

have beeen out watering mine just now

think I'll start talking to them

charliecat · 03/07/2006 19:41

Ok...WHAT are you measuring...I wanna join in!

iota · 03/07/2006 19:43

charliecat - we're measuring the size of our tomatoes (circumference)

charliecat · 03/07/2006 19:46

thats like all the way round yeah? be back in a tick....

charliecat · 03/07/2006 19:48

LOL, got half way up the garden and realised you have TOMATOES. Mine are just flowering now

iota · 03/07/2006 19:49

waht were you going to measure? the main stem?

Anchovy · 03/07/2006 19:49

Actually, one year my Dad went to Sainsburys, bought a load of "on the vine" tomatoes and draped them over his plants to piss me off about how well his tomatoes were doing!

I think this was the entirely correct emoticon . (Followed by when he came clean)

iota · 03/07/2006 19:50

nice one Anchovy

(gives me an idea how to get one over on ks......)

VeniVidiVickiQV · 03/07/2006 19:50

I have flowers and little green tomatoes. Wish id staked mine earlier though...they are looking decidedly wonky.

charliecat · 03/07/2006 19:51

I was gonna measure how fat my plant was at its biggest bits

iota · 03/07/2006 19:51

nip out and measure the biggest one VVV

iota · 03/07/2006 19:52

OK I'm gonna measure height now......back soon

iota · 03/07/2006 19:55

OK my tallest tomato plant is 124cm - and that's with the top pinched out

Debbiethemum - sorry you can't play this one either

kiskidee · 03/07/2006 19:57

is this where all the tomato anoraks are gathering?

[runs off to find her anorak]

VeniVidiVickiQV · 03/07/2006 19:58

If i nipped out right now my work would have something to say about it

The height of them is approx 2-3ft - varying from variety.

The largest green tomato I have seen is the size of your average cherry tomato (10p diameter approx). BUT its a beefsteak variety so i dont know if that is saying an awful lot! Will have another look when i get home though.

iota · 03/07/2006 19:58

that's competitive tomato anoraks to you kiskidee

iota · 03/07/2006 20:00

VVV - that sounds like a contender - be sure to measure it and post result.

KS is currently in the lead at a circumference of 8.5cm

I'm in second place with 8.1cm

nikkie · 03/07/2006 20:04

My toms at the moment are just cherry ones in hanging baskets but have around 20 plants (different varieties) .
Two tallest plants are 4ft 8inches!
