hello!

and a belated thank you for the heads up on what the brown patches are. just hope ive been watering enough otherwise coz theres loads of greenies on there and i REALLY want to eat them! (please turn red!)

had a wee giggle over peduncle clips or whatever they are. i use pipe cleaners! (no-one taught me that, im just shmart, me)

shewhoneverdusts · 30/07/2006 09:14

Why are they taking so long to turn red??? I have a huge crop of tomatoes and they are all green, have I done something wrong or is this normal and I just have to have patience?

nikkie · 30/07/2006 13:18

I have mainly green ones, only turning one or two at a time!

just got back from the weekend at The Big Chill festivalwith the kids in tow...to find a crop of red tomatoes waiting for us!! hurrah!!

we have harvested, so far, 6 beefsteak toms, 2 cherry toms, 4 green peppers, and a total of 5 broad beans.

so thats a salad for dinner then, hehe.

nikkie · 07/08/2006 19:02

My problem is that my tomatoes don't make to the salad as I eat them first

I spotted a green tomato at the weekend. As this is my first foray into growing vegetables (from seed), I was so excited that DH had to come into the garden to see what the fuss was all about.

If I'm lucky and get a healthy crop of tomatoes, should I just pick them as I need them? If not, what is the best way to store them until they are required? I would hate to see them become rotten before I could use them.

TIA

been steadily harvesting away for about a week or so now. marvellous. isnt it satisfying?!

from the lack of activity on this thread i would say youre all harvesting too, hence the reduced need to post anxiously on here

NappiesGalore · 13/08/2006 17:43

speedy - sorry, im as much of a newbie at growing as you so no help to you at all . good luck!

brimfull · 13/08/2006 17:59

nikkie · 13/08/2006 19:20

MegaLegs · 16/08/2006 22:18

We are just getting some ripe beefsteaks but I'm being a bit too eager and picking them before they are fully ripe.

iota · 16/08/2006 22:22

my beefsteaks are still very green

bubbaloo · 17/08/2006 08:35

Hi Ladies,
Hope you don't mind me hijacking, but my tomatoes are still very green and there's so sign of them changing colour soon.Does anyone know if they can be picked when they're green and ripened up somehow, please? I was told to wrap them in newspaper and leave them on a window sill but I haven't tried that yet.

kiskidee · 17/08/2006 08:48

We are inundated with tomatoes at the moment (we have 5 plants). We had 2 varieties - lets call them "small" and "medium", for the sake of tachnical accuracy - and have been harvesting them for the last 3 weeks and they are just lovely. One thing that has been great is that the children (4 & 2)have really enjoyed it - love watering them, love picking them, and graze on them straight from the plant when they are out playing.

My courgettes on the other hand......

iota · 17/08/2006 11:00

only 5 plants Anchovy.

We have 18 [smug emoticon]

Anchovy · 17/08/2006 11:14

Blimey! I think if we had 18 we would had to have one of those roadside stalls!

iota · 17/08/2006 12:30

Anchovy -I'm thinking of supplying the local supermarket

It was all a bit of a mistake really - we grew some - dh wanted beefstead and I wanted normal, then my mum gave us half a dozen plants as well.

We had 20 originally - it seemed mean to kill any of them off, but in the end the 2 weakest were culled

next yr I'm going for more variety of veg - and fewer tomatoes - might grow some peppers nd cucumbers

Anchovy · 17/08/2006 12:49

I did tomatoes, courgettes, carrots and rocket this year. Rocket and tomatoes very successful, carrots not bad but a bit dull and the jury is still out on the courgettes. I think next year we will try potatoes, radishes and pumpkins. Also will look at staggering the sowings! By 2012 I'll be self sufficient and by 2015 I'll be elbowing Martin Fowler aside with my barrow in the market (obviously I'll be looking to you to supply me with cheap tomatoes )
