Thread 38 Covid Cohort, After Results Day

1000 replies

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 20/08/2022 06:03

ALL our children are heroes of their own stories, they have thrived through a once in a century catastrophe and they will succeed

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results (life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Sept?

Hi @Tomnooktoldmeto any info on NTU accommodation would be good. DD still hasn’t had email link that she has to use to book any. NTU says guaranteed accommodation if applied for by 31-8 but would like to get it sorted as we are on holiday next week.TIA

Heifer · 21/08/2022 15:29

crazycrofter · 21/08/2022 15:12

Dd says everyone on the groups she’s in (not sure if this is the course group she’s been on for a while or the CU one) has had an email and has booked their moving in slot for the 22nd, which is the Thursday. Dd has her driving test on that morning! Have any other Nottingham folk booked moving in slot yet??

@crazycrofter - nothing here, just the original welcome letter and that DD will receive a letter re accommodation induction in the coming weeks. Nothing else yet.

crazycrofter · 21/08/2022 15:40

Thanks @heifer, I just need to keep on top of it as dd is going to Reading Thursday morning - is that when the induction is? Hopefully she won’t forget but she did say reception was really bad on the festival site last year. 😬

Decorhate · 21/08/2022 15:46

@Benjispruce4 We have the same problem with Sheffield, no email to allow us to book yet, deadline of 31st and Ds going to Reading on Wednesday.

I suspect they just have a high volume of insurance/clearing places to deal with but I’m impatient to get it sorted out.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 21/08/2022 15:50

DD’s going to Reading too, crazy, but she’s on the Early Bird on Wednesday.

278Newnames · 21/08/2022 15:53

@whoamitojudge nice to get an update from you and your DD although sorry to hear that things have not worked out with Ryanair. I hope she is not put off the industry. Good luck to her, she seems to have a good plan.

I have told DS we will need to have a couple of days to sort stuff out when we get back from holiday on 12th Sept. He will be going either 23/24/25th depending on which accommodation he will get allocated.

He is happy to be going but is not being proactive about anything. Didn’t initially bother opening the congrats email from Bath as “I know I’ve got in”, no concerns about missing anything important. I have decided to check his emails every couple of days in case he misses something. He is still awaiting accommodation allocation so needs to keep on top of it.

i am hoping he will step up the organisational skills soon. I guess when I’m not there to do things he will have to.

Benjispruce4 · 21/08/2022 15:54

Thanks @Decorhate Will just have to be patient. For this reason I do wish results came earlier in the summer. All feels very rushed now. York was 24/9 start whereas NTU is 17/9 so we lose a week already!

Benjispruce4 · 21/08/2022 15:57

DD1 went to Reading on an early bird in 2019. It sounded hell to me but then I’m old!

singingstones · 21/08/2022 16:15

crazy we have online induction on 26th and can then book a moving in slot. DS will probably want to coordinate with his friends who are also going but I'm hoping not Saturday as I'm going away for work on the Sunday and would like a bit of time to recover! Thinking of doing it in a day although it's 3hrs each way on a good day and probably only room for two in the car with all the clobber.

Monkey2001 · 21/08/2022 16:17

DS1 went to Reading in 2018 and had no desire to return until he saw the Arctic Monkeys set, which is apparently making him jealous - he is going to Shambala.

@crazycrofter it is very easy to get in and out of the Reading site, I think DS1 spent a lot of time in Starbucks (to escape the rain), so she could plan to go and sit in a cafe for the induction.

@Seeline I thought that in discussions 20 threads or so ago people said that the UEA students get Tesco deliveries. She could do that at least once a month.

crazycrofter · 21/08/2022 16:20

Ah it’s Friday, thanks @singingstones . I guess I’ll have to make sure I’ve got access to her emails and do it for her if she can’t get reception.

Fruitygal · 21/08/2022 16:37

Heads up on Reading really poor signal or nothing @Alsoplayspiccolo @crazycrofter - if they are taking a car between them then suggest leaving site but being brutal once they are there they won’t care as having far too much fun x

DD is off at Coldplay tonight so having fun 🤩 with bestie from primary - I’m rather jealous x

Decorhate · 21/08/2022 16:46

@Benjispruce4 Well Ds has now got the relevant email to start the accommodation application process - but did not say until he’d already filled in the form. He seems totally oblivious to my anxiety about getting this sorted! And put the less popular location as his first choice because he cba to research or engage with the process.

Sheffield also starts a week earlier than Leeds. So just a couple of weeks to sort everything once he gets back from Reading.

Monkey2001 · 21/08/2022 16:49

@icanbewhatiwant if you want to see the grade boundaries for DS's papers, it looks to me like they do 3 out of 4 papers, the majority of combinations including 01 (Philosophy of Religion) and 02 (Religion and Ethics) and a choice of:
03 (New Testament Studies)
4A: Buddhism
4B: Christianity
4C: Hinduism
4D: Islam
4E: Judaism
4F: Sikhism

There are 2 combinations which cut the first paper and do 02 03 and 4A or 4D.

So if he did Philosophy, Ethics and Christianity it would be
01 02 4B
and an A* would be 205

See the specification - qualifications.pearson.com/content/dam/pdf/A%20Level/Religious%20Studies/2016/Specification%20and%20sample%20assessments/Specification_GCE_A_Level_in_Religious_Studies.pdf

EquallyDivided · 21/08/2022 17:09

Sounds as though DS is going earlier than most on the 11th. Starting to feel a bit “rabbit in the headlights”.

I have been spending time today trying to untangle the complete mess that DH has made of all the DCs apple devices, when he bought DS an Ipad he logged it in using his own apple id instead of DS’s so DS’s phone and Ipad don’t sync properly. DS and I didn’t realise for a few weeks because of the family sharing and he had all his 6th form work on there by then so we left it till now. He also added DD’s phone and ipad to his account instead of setting up an apple id for her. It means all the cloud stuff is in a total jumble and it has given me a headache trying to work out what’s stored where and making sure it is all safe and everyone gets the right stuff when they finally log on with their own apple id. If anyone can follow that.

icanbewhatiwant · 21/08/2022 17:15

@seeline supermarkets are a problem. Some walk to Aldi but it's a 40 mins walk apparently. Ds just walked to a nearby small co op, or used the expensive shop on campus. Or online. That is probably the best thing to do. Ds had his car second and third year. I said that when ds2 looked at unis he should go to one near a supermarket. But Sussex is similar I think. There is a co op on campus, but it's mega expensive.

@Monkey2001 thanks. yes Ds did 01 02 4D Islam. I will look to see if I can find grade boundaries later.

icanbewhatiwant · 21/08/2022 17:20

@Monkey2001 found it already. It says 207 for A* he got 205. So not far off. That's great. Thanks.

Seeline · 21/08/2022 17:22

Thanks icanbe

If we hear about /can then book - moving in day, on the 26th, that's Friday, right?

Benjispruce4 · 21/08/2022 17:36

Durham is the worst for supermarkets. Very expensive Tesco Metro in town and that is it! Aldi is out of town. DD and housemates got Sainsbury's delivery when they clubbed together so I was grateful to catered halls the first year.

Oblomov22 · 21/08/2022 17:36

Crazy, they've already booked? Bugger. Ds claims to know nothing.

Benjispruce4 · 21/08/2022 17:37

Oh there is an Iceland near the viaduct area and a pound shop but nothing else.

Fruitygal · 21/08/2022 17:48

@Benjispruce4 don't depress me might be Sainsbury’s delivery 🚚

mummyinbeds · 21/08/2022 18:02

@Oblomov22 DS hasn't said anything about booking or inductions and there was nothing in his email when I checked last night. Maybe it's a campus v Broadgate Park thing?

We've only had welcome email that said as you've already booked accommodation nothing to do right now and they will be contacting DD in the coming weeks with exciting information on campus events, arrivals and your accommodation induction, info so not really expecting to do anything until letter arrives and it didn't say anything about 27th? Maybe they are doing by accommodation block?

Those that have heard more from Nottingham - what block are you in? DD is Rutland.
