Thread 38 Covid Cohort, After Results Day

1000 replies

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 20/08/2022 06:03

ALL our children are heroes of their own stories, they have thrived through a once in a century catastrophe and they will succeed

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results (life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Sept?

Piggy, they have their own music stands - we have 2 or 3 collapsible ones and a proper solid one.

Piggywaspushed · 30/08/2022 15:14

DS has one but it's really bulky and solid. Not sure it'll fit in the car! He can't do the collapsible ones ( sigh)but he might have to learn...

Piggywaspushed · 30/08/2022 15:34

That looks good . Thanks!

Piggywaspushed · 30/08/2022 15:46

Heads up to Birminghamites. The accommodation provides neither toaster nor kettle...

Bit tight!

Comefromaway · 30/08/2022 15:46

Ds has something similar. The little silver metal ones are useless. He needs something sturdy but transportable. However, these days he usually reads off his ipad so is buying himself an ipad stand.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 30/08/2022 16:34

DD’s flat are sharing the cost of a toaster and kettle, Piggy, but I agree it’s a bit tight not to provide them!

Fruitygal · 30/08/2022 16:35

@Piggywaspushed this is tight ! No toaster or kettle ?!?I would hold off buying and then see on the day.

Piggywaspushed · 30/08/2022 16:39

He doesn't drink tea or coffee so won't be providing the kettle! I bought him a £10 toaster.

Might be a little better to say "I'll buy X, you buy Y, he buys Z" so they can decide who gets the appliance when they move out? (That's what DD is hoping to do.) But probably not a big deal!

Heifer · 30/08/2022 16:45

@Oblomov22 I totally get you, I feel there is an unnecessary lull right now, which no doubt means there will be a frantic period once the information does arrive. I'm checking her emails twice daily (at least) just to be sure it hasn't arrive, and I will let you all know if anything does come in.

@crazycrofter you mentioned nothing for DD at all and thought it might be alphabetical? I'm thinking perhaps departmental, as DD had an email from her department (not much info on it tbh).

mummyinbeds · 30/08/2022 17:24

@crazycrofter @Oblomov22 @Heifer and all the other Notts people. Please let me know when the emails arrive. I'm on holiday until the 9th and DS will be totally oblivious to anything that requires attention.

Oblomov22 · 30/08/2022 17:27

Will do Mummy.

Delphigirl · 30/08/2022 17:34

ealingwestmum · 30/08/2022 13:53

This ^. So pleased for you both chenin

Hear hear!

EwwSprouts · 30/08/2022 17:37

@Fruitygal DS is leaning towards one of the sports science modules, sportsman that he is. Don't think he knows if they clash as setting up email was so traumatic he stopped taking constructive steps forward then.
I think I saw something about a pre thing but I may have made that up and DS isn't here so I can't check. Will let you know when he gets around to opening emails again.

I have pushed the boat out and bought DS a little mat because he won't countenance anything like fairy lights. I know it says bath mat but their rooms are so small it might just fit between bed and desk.
https://www.masato.co.uk/products/smiley-face-bath-mat
It's an independent business in Leeds and AUGUST is a current discount code. No vested interest.

Fruitygal · 30/08/2022 17:55

@EwwSprouts ooo lovely website! Like the mat … forwarded link to DD !

DD went out all day but got up early and moved forward with DSA today, MacBook Air ordered plus finished form for the uni on this too!

Seeline · 30/08/2022 18:03

We know our move in date but not the time yet. UEA say by the end of the week. I don't know whether to book hotel for night before, or the day of the move - we won't do it in a day.

DD progressing well. Online registration seems to be done, with confirmation fro SFE that loan will be paid on the first day of term.

Still got some bits to buy. Biggest issue is going to be clothes I think and how to store them. Her room seems to have a very small single wardrobe - hanging space only - and a small set of drawers which look more like an office pedestal set!

Fiddlersgreen · 30/08/2022 18:03

How did the mattress topper testing go? Was it @Oblomov22 ?
do you need to get an extra deep fitted sheet to go over them do you think?

Ours has a kettle provided but no toaster. Not sure how much DS will use a toaster to be honest so leaving that one and they can all chip together if they all want one.
we have room type allocation but not building name or room number so DS not able to “meet” any flatmates online yet.

so frustrating for those waiting on moving dates, I couldn’t cope not being able to plan, especially those having to stay over.

Fruitygal · 30/08/2022 18:06

Sports science sounds interesting but think geography around climate change etc will win out here

NCTDN · 30/08/2022 19:24

@Seeline (think you're Bristol) is parking on the downs usually not a problem?

NCTDN · 30/08/2022 19:25

Could you book two nights and cancel the one you don't want? That's what I did.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 30/08/2022 19:28

Fruitygal, can you talk me through the process for upgrading a DSA laptop for a MacBook Air or similar, please?
DD has now found her approved DSA equipment email and it gives some kind of generic laptop /notebook, so she’s thinking she might want to upgrade (mostly because DS has just had an Air bought for him for music tech).

Fruitygal · 30/08/2022 21:01

@Alsoplayspiccolo go onto the website for the supplier you’ve been given for the equipment supplier in your DSA letter. Find the spec of mac book air you want and see if on their website - email them and request a quote for the upgrade. It’s not cheap but DD has always had my old laptops so we paid for the upgrade which was £200ish cheaper than one from John Lewis or Apple.

Seeline · 30/08/2022 22:14

@NCTDN my eldest is at UWE so we rarely venture into the city - don't know about parking I'm afraid.

Booking two nights and cancelling one is a good idea - I shall look into it!

NCTDN · 30/08/2022 22:18

Ah @Seeline maybe I got you muddled with someone else?
