Thread 38 Covid Cohort, After Results Day

1000 replies

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 20/08/2022 06:03

ALL our children are heroes of their own stories, they have thrived through a once in a century catastrophe and they will succeed

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results (life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Sept?

Thanks for the tip Coffee. But please could you explain how to find the course module numbers. Singing how did you find them?

I have looked and looked. I found the course and the list of 8 modules for year 1. It only had for 2022, not 2023 yet. I looked up 2022. I found the plan number. But couldn't access further.

I can see no reading list. Nottingham presumably puts each students online, for library access?

singingstones · 21/08/2022 09:01

Try this link Oblomov - you have to pick a campus (UK) and a term (2022 study) and then search by the UCAS code (N410 for your DS I think)

That should take you to the academic plan for the course and the module details for each year are listed if you scroll down.

(I'll find the link for the textbooks in a mo)

https://campus.nottingham.ac.uk/psc/csprdpub/EMPLOYEE/SA/c/UNNPROGANDDMODEXTRACT.UNNPAMPLANNEXTRCT.GBL?Page=UNPLANN_EXTRACT1&Action=U

singingstones · 21/08/2022 09:08

Then search using the module code at the link below, choose 2022/23 from the search results and you should find a list of textbooks.

(NB This all worked for DS's course but maybe other schools do it differently or might not have 2022/23 available yet. DS's lists mostly said if they were core or further reading, and it says if they are available online, I didn't bother to buy if so.)

Oblomov22 · 21/08/2022 09:12

Singing, thanks I had already tried that. Using n410. I then also used the plan code U6UACCNT. But it then came up blank.

I did try 2022. Couldn't get it to work. I think 2023 is not up yet.

Oblomov22 · 21/08/2022 09:23

I did it thanks. I got it. It wasn't working before.
Right. Now I have to go and look them up. See if/what textbooks are required.

Thanks Singing. Purchased from eBay for £3.99 and £4.99, for one topic. I am well pleased. Grin The other topic no reading list is listed yet.

I only looked for the 2 Autumn term subjects so far. Are you buying all, for the whole year?

CoffeeWithCheese · 21/08/2022 10:04

I’ve just finished at DMU - we only found out about it via some of the second years!

singingstones · 21/08/2022 10:11

All of DS's modules are full year - I bought four core / recommended books from a full list of about 25 I guess. Some of them are £200+ new and there aren't that many in the library so hopefully I have saved him a few quid. It's a one time offer - he will have to find some friends in the year above to source cheap 2nd year textbooks!

Alsoplayspiccolo · 21/08/2022 10:14

Piggy, I’m not sure how she found her other flat mates, but I’ll ask her when she gets up.
Sp far, she’s met 2 girls and a boy, studying international business, liberal arts and maths. The boy has already begged the girls not to bring his Tik Tok kitchen nightmare videos to life 🤣.

icanbewhatiwant · 21/08/2022 10:47

There are so many posts. I can't keep up. I've read through this new thread. But not caught up with the previous one. It's great to hear all the news. Most dc's know where they are going now.

We are back home. The weather is much warmer back in Suffolk. Ds1 didn't water all my plants...so some have died due to no rain. Being in Cornwall in the rain there made me forget about the lack of rain here.

Anyway, after discussions with ds2. He's sticking with Sussex. He was adamant all along he wanted to go there. He wouldn't consider anywhere else, so seems silly to change now. I think maybe if I were home after results and we had looked at clearing he might have considered somewhere else. But to wait a year he will watch all his friends go to uni. while he has to work, he also wants to do a year abroad, he's now thinking of a masters, so he'd be studying until almost age 26. Plus the loans change next year. So best to just go to Sussex. It's still a good university.

I have looked online for grade boundaries, just out of curiosity, as he wondered how far from A star he was. There are quite a few RS exams on edexel page. But none have the same code as ds's. So no idea where to find it. But all the A star marks are either a few marks above or 3 marks below ds's. So he can't have been far off.

Ds has booked a moving in day of 15th. He wanted to stay in his job until 16th. The actual moving in weekend is 17th/18th. But dh and ds1 are going away that weekend...down to Goodwood. So it makes it difficult as we have dogs as ds3 also can't be left long. I didn't really want to drive all the way there and back in one day either. So I told Ds he must book Sunday or the early option of Thursday. I prefer Sunday as he could work until fri, we could pack Saturday and leave sun morn. Dh will be back Sunday lunchtime so ds3 could stay home for a while. Then I could spend a couple of days with my mum, who lives near Hastings. But you know my Ds...he won't do it my way. He wants to go thurs. So I need to be back fri eve as dh will leave fri afternoon. We will be passing each other somewhere on the journey! Dh is a pest, I knew when he said he'd booked goodwood that it would clash within moving in weekend.

Piggywaspushed · 21/08/2022 10:54

Is it history? Sussex is excellent for history.

Benjispruce4 · 21/08/2022 12:00

Been reading up on NTU and quite impressed at the updates they’ve made to all degree courses to include some work experience. Hoping to visit this week.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 21/08/2022 12:06

Piggy, DD says there’s a FB group for new Birmingham students (something like Official University of Birmingham Offer Holders 2022). DD posted a shout out for Elgar Court and someone posted a link to a Snapchat group chat.

Do you know anything about booking moving in dates/slots? We need to sort out dog care and book a hotel to stay over after we’ve moved her in.

icanbewhatiwant · 21/08/2022 12:14

@Piggywaspushed yes history with philosophy. Though he has said he might drop philosophy if he doesn't like it.

Piggywaspushed · 21/08/2022 12:26

Not much also. Weekend of 15th, 16th 17th is all I know.

DS doesn't seem all that inclined to track down flatmates. Is this maybe more of a girl thing?

Might be a personality thing, with some correlation? My DD is in touch with housemate plus several other course-mates on the same street (uni-owned houses). She went camping with one of them over the summer! As she is generally a bit shy this is a huge thing for her.

Moving down on the 8th, which is an early start, but their whole year seems early (with a long summer at the June end rather than the September end IYSWIM).

icanbewhatiwant · 21/08/2022 12:55

No one else on here is going to Sussex. When I was a similar thread for ds1 there were quite a few dc's off to UEA and we made our own thread. No one to do that with this time 😞

horrificbiology · 21/08/2022 13:05

My DD is doing Biology (placement year) at Lancaster. Luckily it is only about an hour away and okay on the train.

EquallyDivided · 21/08/2022 14:03

We looked at Sussex for History and were really impressed with the department. However DS didn’t like the uni as a whole (too big and unfortunately on the open day when we went there was a noisy demo against one of the female professors over her stand on women’s rights which was quite intimidating) so he didn’t feel it was the right place for him. Although not too far as the crow flies it’s not particularly easy to get to from here either.

This time DD seems to be the only one going to UEA! Hoping you are happy to be asked random questions 😆
Which supermarket do the UEA students use? None seem particularly close. I know there is an Aldi about 30 min walk, but that doesn't do gluten-free which DD would need.

Fiddlersgreen · 21/08/2022 15:04

The accommodation dates for Leicester all seem to start on 24th so I guess they have to move in that weekend as it says term starts on 26th? (Well, freshers week I assume)
it’s going to be a very busy weekend if all are moving in at the same time.
I know with Cardiff, you booked a time slot to collect your keys over a 5 day period so they could spread everyone out

crazycrofter · 21/08/2022 15:12

Dd says everyone on the groups she’s in (not sure if this is the course group she’s been on for a while or the CU one) has had an email and has booked their moving in slot for the 22nd, which is the Thursday. Dd has her driving test on that morning! Have any other Nottingham folk booked moving in slot yet??

Tomnooktoldmeto · 21/08/2022 15:13

@Seeline have you checked Aldi, they’re actually very good for gluten free and sell the core basics that coeliac Uk pushed for all shops to sell

Seeline · 21/08/2022 15:17

@Tomnooktoldmeto we've only got a tiny one near us which has nothing. I couldn't find anything on the website. I shall have to see if I can find a larger one so we can have a look!
