Thread 38 Covid Cohort, After Results Day

1000 replies

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 20/08/2022 06:03

ALL our children are heroes of their own stories, they have thrived through a once in a century catastrophe and they will succeed

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results (life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Sept?

@Fruitygal it was very annoying for DD and housemates. The Tesco in market square used to be an Express then changed to Metro and the prices went even higher! Only one friend had a car with him and he’s was fed up with Aldi shuttles. It’s something I never considered as DD was so sure she wanted to go there and loved it so would never have affection her decision anyway. Luckily she is vegetarian and could get by on a bag of lentils for a week!

Benjispruce4 · 21/08/2022 18:04

Benjispruce4 · 21/08/2022 18:09

Which college @Fruitygal ? DD was at Collingwood and loved it.It’s a lovely city, small but felt safe.

Benjispruce4 · 21/08/2022 18:21

@Decorhate just had email in last hour ( when DD saw it 🤔) and have submissions request. 🤞🏻Now she’s gone to play tennis with bf.

@heifer DS is Rutland too. I think a few of them were from memory. I'd sort of stopped thinking about it as DS was convinced he wouldn't get the grades

Fruitygal · 21/08/2022 18:53

DD put snow as wanted self catering as cooks a lot also liked Josephine butler more than south.

Fruitygal · 21/08/2022 18:54

When my Dad was at Notts uni he was in Sherwood hall

Tomnooktoldmeto · 21/08/2022 18:59

@Benjispruce4 the only thing I know is that move in date is 16th and induction starts Monday 19th

We are relatively local and they will be commuting by taxi due to disability

so far the communication has been excellent, both have enrolled and provided a photo for id that will be dispatched in 10 working days. Both have also got first week itinerary

Hopefully on Monday you’ll get everything and can start prepping, accommodation looked great when we visited and city campus was lovely

Benjispruce4 · 21/08/2022 19:00

Ah snow is a bit further up the hill past Collingwood from memory. DD1 was likely to not eat properly so catered was a safe bet in first year. She can cook and got quite experimental in y2&3.
DD2 wants self catered and I think that’s all that’s available at NTU anyway. It did make first year easier to be catered as less to take up when they move in.They had a small kitchenette with toaster, kettle and microwave which was fine.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 21/08/2022 19:04

@Seeline you have to really search at Aldi (and Lidl) but they’re both fairly good for us coeliac’s

Hopefully your DD might be pleasantly surprised on campus, we were at NTU a couple of weeks ago and found they had multiple sandwiches/cobs etc that were not only gluten free but also vegetarian which is so rare I can’t remember the last time we saw any

Benjispruce4 · 21/08/2022 19:12

@Tomnooktoldmeto thank you. Do you have twins?

Benjispruce4 · 21/08/2022 19:13

16/9 is a Friday which is strange. I can’t get term time off as school staff.

singingstones · 21/08/2022 19:16

@Oblomov

DS has had an email about accommodation but Broadgate Park might be organised differently from the catered halls on campus.

Here's what it said about induction / booking arrivals.

singingstones · 21/08/2022 19:17

(So yes, he will be booking an arrival slot on Friday I hope)

crazycrofter · 21/08/2022 19:21

@heifer dd is Rutland too. She said she’s had an email to say she’ll be getting an email 😂

Maybe the induction is just for Broadgate then. Dd is away from Thur to Mon I think so please could Rutland people tell me if your kids get emails during that period?

@Benjispruce4 this is a bit sad but when we were looking at unis, I located the local Aldi/Lidl on the map to work out affordability! That put me off Bath…

Oblomov22 · 21/08/2022 19:24

Ah. Understood. We are Rutland like Heifer and Crazy.

Tomnooktoldmeto · 21/08/2022 19:37

@Benjispruce4 No not twins, DD was very unwell when she started secondary school and missed most of the first year.when we moved her to a new school with an EHCP we made the decision to restart the year which moved her back into her DB’s year

its a really long story and very identifying, DD sadly has many conditions which is why the decision was made to stay fairly local for support. DS also has many of the same conditions and wanted extra support too

Benjispruce4 · 21/08/2022 20:44

No worries @Tomnooktoldmeto indidnt mean to pry. Good luck to them both.🤞🏻
@crazycrofter that’s not sad that’s sensible. I’m a proud Aldi shopper.😊

whoamitojudge · 21/08/2022 20:53

@278Newnames Thank you. I’m happy that she’s settled now

Heifer · 22/08/2022 07:48

@crazycrofter don't worry, I will let you know if DD receives and email from Nottingham. Hope she enjoys Reading. DD went to Boardmasters and love it and is just going to Leeds for the Sunday this time (she couldn't cope with another 4 days).

DD hasn't switched on to uni at all yet. She is still busying socialising. She needs a dress for a black tie event at hockey early Sept and as she didn't have a prom has nothing to wear so that is taking up a fair amount of time.. I've said please make sure it's ok for the Balls at uni too... @crazycrofter where did your DD get her prom from in the end?

Hopefully everyone sorted uni wise now? is everyone confirmed etc? It's hard to keep up.

Good luck with those going to Ikea etc - I've done all of ours online so far - need to collect it all up to see what I've actually bought already. DD needs to clear out her cloths so she can see what she actually has to take to uni ( a lot) but there will be gaps as she doesn't really have daytime clothes.

I am relieved that she isn't leaving until the 22nd Sept at least as it gives us a bit more time.

@Piggywaspushed great news re DD1 - what a relief for both of you. Doesn't sound like DD2 will give you the same worries ;-)

Benjispruce4 · 22/08/2022 08:20

Remember to only take each season’s clothes. Helps lots with packing.

Volterra · 22/08/2022 08:47

Bath accommodation form now in, better late than never and will have to wait and see what he gets - as long as it is something I don’t think he minds.

Seeline · 22/08/2022 08:50

DD not really sure what to take clothes-wise. She doesn't have a huge amount, and doesn't know what's suitable. Sixth form was suits and business wear so not really relevant. She hasn't been one for going 'out out' and having only just turned 18 hasn't been clubbing or anything so no idea what she needs for that. She's really a jeans and (men's) T-shirt girl!

Heifer · 22/08/2022 08:50

Good shout @Benjispruce4 , although DD doesn't really have seasonal clothes (apart from coat) as she is often cold anyway, so always has a sweatshirt/hoodie with her. I can see her wearing a lot of trackies or gymshark leggings and sweatshirt/hoodies during the day. She only ever wears jeans during the evening. Although she has lots of shoes/trainers she actually only wears the same few pairs so that should be ok.
