Thread 38 Covid Cohort, After Results Day

1000 replies

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 20/08/2022 06:03

ALL our children are heroes of their own stories, they have thrived through a once in a century catastrophe and they will succeed

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results (life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Sept?

Gcse results in here: great news, esp on her sciences which she pulled right up. Scraped what she needed for maths but that was as anticipated!!

Fiddlersgreen · 25/08/2022 08:45

@Delphigirl DS said I had to stay in the car too but when I saw all the others had a parent I was allowed in. Currently waiting in the school hall for him

Fiddlersgreen · 25/08/2022 08:45

Fantastic @Isthisjustnormal !!

OublietteBravo · 25/08/2022 08:46

Damn. Only a 6 in GCSE maths. That means we’re going to have to re-evaluate A-level options as it takes out both maths and physics.

Volterra · 25/08/2022 08:55

great news @Isthisjustnormal
@OublietteBravo is it worth getting a copy to see what has gone on and that nothing has gone wrong with the marking?

Fingers crossed for those of you waiting in cars and anywhere else 🍀

PhotoDad · 25/08/2022 09:20

Good luck to those getting GCSE results! My DS will be in that situation next year.

Seeline · 25/08/2022 09:36

Thinking of everyone doing the double today! 🍀🍀

Sorry to hear Maths was lower than expected. DD also was given Grade 6 (2020) and she took Core Maths with her A levels (it's like an AS Level) can be done over 1 or 2 years (depends on the school). She was offered a grade lower at some uni if she got a grade B (she did but Nottingham wasn't lowered) so didn't effect her but was still worthwhile doing as higher than GCSE and it helped her with Biology & Pyschology apparently.

Delphigirl · 25/08/2022 09:51

DD2 did really well. All 8s and 9s except for 7s in comp sci and eng lit (which was the one she became ill in and had to leave half way through the second paper). She is delighted!

Zebracat · 25/08/2022 10:04

Well done to all GCSE dc. I always think they are hard, and expectations high. I got 3 O levels at my first attempt. But I think people were allowed to fail a bit more in 1975.
she has her 1st choice of accommodation. Looks super modern, I always prefer old and tired, but think that says more about me!
@crazycrofter whatever his results, that boy will go far!

Horace123 · 25/08/2022 10:04

Phew - 8s for 3 subjects and 9s for the other 7 subjects. Well done to all the other mini DCs ( who if our house is anything to go by got a bit overlooked with the stress of A level / IB of their older siblings).

Shimy · 25/08/2022 10:12

Well done to all those siblings getting GCSE results this morning. I kind of feel a bit sad at not having the eve of results day vigil anymore, in a weird kind of way. That rush of excitement when the clock strikes 8am!

@Benjispruce4 Yes, I meant 'had not' been allocated accommodation yet, this thread moves so fast that it's a bit meaning less now. But apparently, closing date for applying for accommodation at Warwick was yesterday so we can expect to hear something from next week.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 25/08/2022 10:17

Good luck to those with gcses today!

Benjispruce4 · 25/08/2022 10:17

Some great gcse results- congratulations!
DD was offered out of town accommodation by NTU yesterday so I’m glad I had booked the private halls yesterday thanks to a tip off. DD is going to have a look around Nottingham today with bf. Again she has read some horrible stuff on Tik Tok about NTU being for failures. Yes I have told her to delete TIk Tok but ….

EquallyDivided · 25/08/2022 10:34

Good set of results for DD in GCSEs, she managed a surprise 7 in Latin which was by far the hardest for her. Sorry to hear about the maths disappointment @OublietteBravo, I hope she can find a solution she's happy with for A levels.

MirandaWest · 25/08/2022 10:50

DD got GCSE results today - eight 9s and three 8s. Amazing results but two of her friends got straight 9s and one of her eights was in English Lit which was unexpected. Other 8s were maths (v high 8 and she was pleased with it) and RE which was very near to a 9 so we may look into it getting reviewed.

I have bought another congratulations balloon - had to go a bit further to find one that wasn’t the same as DSs from last week!

Fiddlersgreen · 25/08/2022 10:55

Great results so far everyone.
Mixed bag here, one 8 (2 marks off a 9!)
two 7s, four 6s, three 5s and a distinction* for his BTEC subject.
Happy with all but DS is disappointed with English, both Lit and Lang he got 5s but got 8s in the last two sets of mocks.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 25/08/2022 10:55

Decent results for DS - 4x9, 4x8 and 2x7….including a 7 for maths, up from a 5 in mocks, after I dragged him through “Mummy Maths” every day. 🤩

The other 7 is in history, which is an A level choice and one of his strongest subjects. He’s apparently very close to an 8 so school have suggested a review.

PaddingtonPaddington · 25/08/2022 11:05

Fab results here for DS too: 2 x 8, 7x7 & 1x6. Was expecting 5s in both English so a bit surprised. Have asked for a mark review for physics as only 1 mark off the next grade boundary and it’s one of his A level choices. Really thrilled for him.

well done all the GCSE DCs today 🎉

Monkey2001 · 25/08/2022 11:07

@Benjispruce4 I bet there are tic toks about why Oxford is awful too - when thousands of students go somewhere, some will not like it!

@OublietteBravo how far off was your DC? Our school has an option to sit a maths test if you did not have the grade you wanted. I agree that it would be worth getting the paper back and if there was a particular weakness she might be able to talk to the school.

Cantonet · 25/08/2022 11:15

I don't know yet as Ds hasn't told me & appears to be sleeping 😨
I think he likes to keep me in suspense!
Last week it took him a few hours to tell me about the other two Gcse's.

OublietteBravo · 25/08/2022 11:19

I think he’s going to do DT instead of physics (he got an 8 in DT, and the school only requires a 6 in maths for this option).

Thanks @Heifer - I’ll definitely look into core maths. That sounds like it might be useful for him.

Piggywaspushed · 25/08/2022 11:57

All strength to those having yet another results day! Gruelling.

I have just noticed Birmingham departments do something called 'quiet welcomes' for those who find the crowds and noise of welcome week too much. Particularly aimed at neuro diverse students, this is very thoughtful.

Oblomov22 · 25/08/2022 12:01

🍀 Congrats to all GCSE results.

What a great idea.

Ds was invited to an orientation day for disabled/ND students at Leeds Conservatoire but he didn't feel that he needed it.
