Thread 38 Covid Cohort, After Results Day

1000 replies

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 20/08/2022 06:03

ALL our children are heroes of their own stories, they have thrived through a once in a century catastrophe and they will succeed

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results (life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Sept?

@Cantonet I made sure DD was logged in but left her to it with a list we made beforehand as a prompt. I’m trying to encourage independence and taking a step back in order to try and help her start helping herself. They emailed her a support plan and I went through it with her afterwards.

Ds has just bought a Lenovo laptop. It is a gaming one but not a top of the range/fast one. It was £600. Similar to the one in the link. After the problems we had with ds1's HP one breaking after a year, Ds2 went to our local, family run pc shop. Things might cost a bit more there but I trust them and any problems they will sort out. Ds insisted it had to run "football manager"

Ds has joined a Sussex accommodation page on Facebook for his whole block, he had to create a Facebook account especially. It's not flat specific like ds1's was. So he won't comment on there, he said there are lots of people in the group but only a small amount have written anything on the page. So he probably won't speak to anyone before going. But he isn't bothered. I expect he will be first one there as we've requested the earlier arrival day. He wont mind though. Ds1 was quite concerned that everyone was staying in their rooms on his move in day. He wasn't keen on me leaving.

@Oblomov22 my soon to be year 9 has ds1 here for a while yet once ds2 has gone, much to his disappointment. Ds1 plans to go to NZ in Jan for a year. Then ds3 will be an only child for a while. He can't wait. Though he gets on well with ds2. He hates ds1.

PhotoDad · 24/08/2022 22:59

Think we might be the earliest, DD moves in on the 7th... a fortnight tomorrow!

crazycrofter · 24/08/2022 23:04

@Alsoplayspiccolo it’s such a worry isn’t it?! Ds and friends have managed to get their gym memberships suspended - when they spent the night at the PureGym (we thought ds was at a friend’s house), they moved all the equipment to make a benchmobile - basically using the weights as wheels and creating a huge car with the weights bench on top - and did a tiktok about it 😩

cheninblanc · 24/08/2022 23:11

Good luck to everyone collecting gcses tmrw. My daughter is very nervous after the last week with her sisters drama!!

KingscoteStaff · 24/08/2022 23:18

You beat us @PhotoDad - DD heading up on the 8th for preseason hockey!! Sounds a bit bonkers to me, but at least she’ll start Freshers’ Week with a few friendly faces and a vague idea of where things are in town…

Fiddlersgreen · 24/08/2022 23:22

Think DS moves on 24th but still waiting for accommodation allocation etc.
They said everyone is guaranteed uni accommodation if applied for by 1st Sept so I don’t know if they wait until then to allocate.

Good luck to everyone else with GCSE results tomorrow, I didn’t realise there were so many of us!

EwwSprouts · 24/08/2022 23:30

Good luck to all the DC opening GCSEs results tomorrow!

Monkey2001 · 25/08/2022 01:00

Good luck to the GCSE gang, we are all invested in the younger DC too now!

Fruitygal · 25/08/2022 05:03

Good Luck with GCSEs! Thunderstorms ⛈ with lightning ⚡️ so up and list making 😂

Horace123 · 25/08/2022 06:03

Also popping in to wish the GCSEers the very best of luck. DD gets hers today today and is very nervous.

Horace123 · 25/08/2022 06:08

And a quick question (because for reasons unknown I keep losing everyone) - do we stay on the Further Education page going forward? I know there is the Oxbridge one on Higher Education but I do like our group on this thread.

EquallyDivided · 25/08/2022 06:39

Someone suggested we move to Parents of Adult Children, as not everyone's DC are going into HE at this point. I would very much like the group to stay together too.

Good luck to all the other GCSEers. I woke about 20 mins ago and went down to feed the cats, no sign of DD yet, she was feeling very nervous last night. Now back in bed with a cuppa and the window wide open listening to the rain, it is pouring down.

craggyrat · 25/08/2022 06:46

Good luck to the GCSE people.

DS goes 1 October so one of the latest!

mango0 · 25/08/2022 06:58

Wishing the very best of luck to those DC getting their GCSE results today, I hope they're all happy!

I can't believe it's only been a week since a level results, it feels much longer.

Dd's move in date will be either the 1st or 2nd October.

Oops, actually DD is the 8th as well -- so we're tied! Welcome Week starts on the 12th for her but she wanted to have some time to settle in and buy what she needs for room. Has already made plans with coursemates to meet up.

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 25/08/2022 07:25

Good luck all the GCSE minis. 🍀

I woke up to a text (at 7am!) from ds saying he and his friend are already in the city centre 😱and we can pick up him from school once he’s got his results. He hasn’t actually slept yet. After the staying all night in the gym situation we said he must always be back by midnight. Didn’t think to introduce rules about not going out early in the morning without telling us!

Good luck everyone!

mango0 · 25/08/2022 07:38

@horrificbiology I hope you and your dd enjoy your trip to Lancaster.

Delphigirl · 25/08/2022 07:53

Well DD2 won’t go and get her results until 9.45 as she wants to go with a friend who is only coming back from holiday this morning. I am allowed to drive her to school but have to stay in the car park apparently…
Aurgh!

Northumberlandlass · 25/08/2022 08:24

DS can move in on weekend of 10th, Freshers starts 19th. Not sure if this is because it's private student halls? Anyway, we're nearby so we're going through on 10th and I think he'll move in over the week...

Good luck to everyone with more results today - I am sure not my nerves would have taken it!!!

We are close to Newcastle, so if anyone has any questions about the city / area, I am more than happy to try & answer them.

tryingmybest13 · 25/08/2022 08:27

Good luck to those collecting GCSEs!

singingstones · 25/08/2022 08:30

Well I'm a lot less stressed than I was last week. DD still in bed, I think she's going to school in an hour or so. Good luck to fellow GCSE-ers, may they all get what they need 🍀

OublietteBravo · 25/08/2022 08:34

We’re on holiday. DD got confirmation of her accommodation yesterday, and seems really happy with it. DS is about to check his GCSE results 🤞

cheninblanc · 25/08/2022 08:41

Dreading this morning after reading the headlines! I'd quite like to get off this roller coaster of stress now!! 10am we can go
