Thread 38 Covid Cohort, After Results Day

1000 replies

CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 20/08/2022 06:03

ALL our children are heroes of their own stories, they have thrived through a once in a century catastrophe and they will succeed

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results (life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Sept?

Ha @Oblomov22
I think it was probably me but I can't remember where I got that from and how reliable it was, thanks for confirming!
We have induction and slot booking on Friday so I may have useful things to tell you then.

For those with non clubbing DC, DS was a very late starter in that department, he never used to leave the house without us pre covid and I used to worry about it when all his friends were off getting up to mischief. And then one day in Y13 it just started, so I think they get there at their own pace and choose the social life that suits them. As can be seen on the thread there will be plenty of like-minded people. DS has always been cautious and a slow burner with new situations, he wouldn't go to swimming lessons until DD was old enough to go with him 😂
(And choice of Nottingham is partly because people he knows are going there I think.)

278Newnames · 24/08/2022 13:30

Well done @Zebracat and @mango0.

It’s difficult to keep up with this thread, it’s so fast moving.

Piggywaspushed · 24/08/2022 13:43

I never use a tumble drier either tbf (only towels) but have multiple radiators and an airing cupboard. He'll just have to get Febreze!

I too am off to cricket now! Lord's for us.

Northumberlandlass · 24/08/2022 13:48

Just catching up and I'm delighted to see so many positive updates!

DS left for Leeds Festival at 4am (apparently to be close to the front of the queue) and he's messaged to say he's all set up there.

We have an admin list on the wall which has very few items ticked off!! DS is in Private Accommodation and he's found one girl who is in his flat which is good.

For those talking about partying, I think DS's confidence took a knock during Covid as he is quite quiet and became isolated, but he's really stepped up the partying now and went to an A-level results party in a Club last week in Newcastle (our closest city) and off to Leeds this week. He's bought a full ticket offer for freshers...

DS can move in early, but as we're close by we'll go to the flat first (as it seems so long ago since we first saw it) to size it up and decide what he needs and then go shopping!

horrificbiology · 24/08/2022 13:57

I have now nearly finished the shopping for DD just need to order the mattress topper. Going to do a trip up to Lancaster to check out the town shops etc as we didn't go and it is not that far from us.

horrificbiology · 24/08/2022 14:00

Sorry about your Aunt @cheninblanc and glad your DD now knows what she is doing.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 24/08/2022 16:04

Thanks boxcar. I spotted a post about the Student Support number on FB, so DD called SFW, who gave it to her but said they’d never had anyone ask for it before!

DD has been safely dropped at Reading, so now I can start thinking about tomorrow’s GCSE results…

Re socialising or not, DD and DS are polar opposites! We can’t keep DD in - she would happily be out every night, finances allowing, hates spending time alone.

DS, on the other hand, hasn’t been out with friends at all since exams finished (other than prom night).
He has friends and chats to them online every day, but says he enjoys his own company and can’t be bothered with the hassle of going out - his friends are scattered across a wide area, all of them a car journey away.
He’s sociable and funny when he’s with people…it’s just that he’s too lazy to organise social stuff!

crazycrofter · 24/08/2022 16:52

@Alsoplayspiccolo ds used to be like that - it was too much effort- but now the H part of his Adhd has kicked in and he is out whenever he possibly can be too! He’s constantly looking for excitement, it’s such a worry!

Good luck for tomorrow all those who also have GCSE results. I’m nowhere near as nervous as I was last week!

Cantonet · 24/08/2022 17:17

@alwaysplayspiccolo ds1 is the same. As a ex-boarder his friends are overseas or far away. But his twin DD is the exact opposite & is a social butterfly.
@Mango Ds also has never been to a pub or night club, as he's only just turned 18. I'm concerned how he will fare at Uni.
We've got an online meeting tomorrow with the Surrey uni. D.a. department.
They emailed him a while ago to see if he could set one up. Anyone else had one of these yet?

Fruitygal · 24/08/2022 19:28

NTU and Nottingham in general is super fun! Loved it !! I enjoyed going out but wasn’t a hardcore party person before I got there BUT it was so much fun - Balls, house parties, amazing Union, loads of clubs, Rock city and an old Irish man sat on a dining chair 🪑 outside one club with a cash box. More people used to be out in the evening than in the day…..they will find something that works for them … lovely places to walk, nice old pubs if not a party person and Goose Fair !

Fruitygal · 24/08/2022 19:30

Good luck for all those with the two year gap and the double bubble this year!! Hope the results are a little more straightforward!

Anon778833 · 24/08/2022 19:36

We’ve had so much stress trying to get DD’s accommodation sorted. Still heard absolutely nothing from the halls she applied to. She then looked at reviews for this accommodation to see that it is apparently awful and nobody recommends it.

we ended up booking somewhere through a private student company. Which is a minefield as some of these people seem dodgy. One company was communicating via WhatsApp and we noticed it had ‘shit as it’s username!

Alsoplayspiccolo · 24/08/2022 19:36

crazy, your DS sounds EXACTLY the same as DD - she’s always chasing the buzz, looking for stimulation…and if she can’t find it, she creates it 😱

cantonet, I’m from Surrey originally, down the A3 from Guildford. I did suggest to DD she might consider going there, but she rejected it because she wants the city experience.
Its a beautiful place to live and such a vibrant town.

ProggyMat · 24/08/2022 20:07

Sending positive vibes to all waiting for GCSE results in the morning !
Good luck 🍀🍀🍀

Volterra · 24/08/2022 20:39

Good luck to those of you facing round 2 🍀🍀🍀🍀

kiwiandcherries · 24/08/2022 20:50

Yes, looking forward to hearing all the good news from those of you with GCSE results coming tomorrow.

PaddingtonPaddington · 24/08/2022 20:51

DD has booked a slot to move in Friday 16th September pm and I’ve booked a hotel in Cardiff for DH and I as it’s a 5 hour drive. Also helped DD apply for an HSBC account online which may take up to 10 days to approve. All this admin stuff has taken ages!

DS results tomorrow. He’s very laid back about it and I’m sure it’ll be all fine for him staying at his school sixth form. Feels very different to last time. Good luck to all those getting results tomorrow 🍀

singingstones · 24/08/2022 21:02

It's approaching fast isn't it? Three weeks on Friday for Paddington 🤯

Anyone going before that?

EquallyDivided · 24/08/2022 21:04

Yes, DS moves in on the 11th. Yikes!

Comefromaway · 24/08/2022 21:06

11th here too

EquallyDivided · 24/08/2022 21:07

@Cantonet I’m fairly near Guildford too, it is a lovely city. I had several discussions early on with the learning support dept at the RAU, but I ought to email again about some of the things that aren’t covered by DSA. The list of things to do seems to be getting longer not shorter.

HarrietDVane · 24/08/2022 21:11

Good luck to all those collecting GCSE results tomorrow!

PaddingtonPaddington · 24/08/2022 21:21

Far too soon @singingstones 😭Term starts on 19th alongside freshers week.

11th @Oblomov22 and @EquallyDivided even sooner!!

@Cantonet DD had a meeting with her student services and found it really useful. They went through the DSA support things with her and created an individual learning support plan to go to the teachers.

NCTDN · 24/08/2022 21:31

DD got her first choice accommodation and booked to move in on Sat 17th 😧She's got loads of info from others on a Bristol what's app group chat through FB.

Cantonet · 24/08/2022 21:45

@paddington is it the done thing for a parent to listen in to this support meeting ? Or is that interfering too much at this stage?
