CinnamonOrangeCremeBrulee · 20/08/2022 06:03

ALL our children are heroes of their own stories, they have thrived through a once in a century catastrophe and they will succeed

This is a support thread for our young adults post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting, and their results (life updates for those who went into work or have had results earlier). It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Sept?

@EquallyDivided what’s a sock octopus?

And, whatever it is, why isn't it called a socktopus?

Zebracat · 23/08/2022 18:51

Im bored now. Ongoing student loan saga goes on. We did have a useful teams chat with some people at the university today. They are really sympathetic, but even they don’t really get what a total mess it is, and that it needs to be sorted for all students in kinship care not just this one. It is fundamentally unfair and discriminatory. I haven’t done any voluntary work since I retired apart from raising a young person. But I think I may have to actually get involved with this by joining a charity and campaigning for change. I am sort of glad of their ability to glaze over at any admin. Otherwise the meeting that glaringly revealed the £6000 shortfall between what she needs and what she has might have really upset her.

Isthisjustnormal · 23/08/2022 19:00

Socktopus!

Piggywaspushed · 23/08/2022 19:32

Cute!

DS1 was lucky at Lincoln : they had washing machines in their kitchens. I think traipsing backwards and forwards with washing could be a bit irritating fro DS2! And I find nothing ever gets dry on an airer. If anyone can tell me how to get t shirts dry before they start smelling I'd be grateful!! We tried the heated ones but they really only dry the tiny bit that is being heated....

Piggywaspushed · 23/08/2022 19:33

Do you have a decent not a ToryMP zebra?

I can imagine some MPs getting really interested in this issue.

Fiddlersgreen · 23/08/2022 20:03

Isthisjustnormal · 23/08/2022 19:00

oh I like that! might have to persuade DS he needs one!

omnishambles · 23/08/2022 20:21

Reminds me of this audio is on there and worth it...

Takeittotheboss · 23/08/2022 20:23

Not got much to say as DS on gap year so university stuff definitely on the back boiler.
However, DD1 went to Notts in Rutland for first year and definitely dressed up smartly for several Balls. Generally only the girls from abroad wore short dresses as that's what they had brought with them. Most boys smart too. Also seemed to be lot of fancy dress nights particularly at start/freshers.Lunch food voucher scheme was classed as excellent as one could buy stuff from on campus supermarket as well as cafes. Rutland food not v highly rated though and portions small and lacking fresh stuff.
No Ikea visit was had ever. Including for Broadgate (where she was in 2nd year).
Very flexible over timings for accommodation fees so don't worry about any late arrival of maintenance monies.

So finally an answer!! And it's a no for the degree and we are ok with that. Dd is a little disappointed but part of falmouth is the Fashion Retail Academy in london and that's her dream, so she's secured a place on the level 4 btec doing digital marketing for fashion (she sorted this over the weekend), its a years course and fully funded. She can move up to the degree after or onto employment - every student bar one this year went to work at asos after the years course. You need an A level to do the course so be same age group.

She wants to be in the buzz of London, we are just outside and she's got that. Plus the days already fit around her job at primark in bluewater where she's really happy. I'm so relieved we have an answer. It's been a long week alongside my favourite aunt passing away yesterday. I've got stuff from the chemist for my ulcers, dd is happy and just gcses now on Thursday.

Thank you so much for all your support!! We have a very resilient group of young people thanks to the last few years 😀

cheninblanc · 23/08/2022 20:40

And we love ikea and will probably go anyway as she needs a new desk! She's new carpets going in her room Friday so a little ikea trip and a new desk will be just what's deserved! Probably a plant too xx

Fruitygal · 23/08/2022 20:45

@Seeline id say weekend clothes - casual jeans and trackies. Some places have balls or smart dinners so need a dress for those but most can manage with casual clothes plus a couple of nice tops to team with jeans if going clubbing.

my DD lives in Vans/ converse plus jeans and shorts … t shirts or more girlie tops and hoodies.

Benjispruce4 · 23/08/2022 20:46

Oh @cheninblanc I am so pleased that you’ve come up with what actually sounds like a better plan. Falmouth you are fools!!!! Go @cheninblanc DD!! 💪

Fruitygal · 23/08/2022 20:48

@cheninblanc that sounds like a plan ! So pleased she can move forward and do something she loves x

Fiddlersgreen · 23/08/2022 20:50

Oh @cheninblanc I’m so pleased you finally have an answer but I’m so angry on your behalf that they kept you waiting for so long! The new plan sounds fantastic though and I’m thrilled for your DD!

ealingwestmum · 23/08/2022 20:54

That’s a fine update cheninblanc, your DD’s an absolute star for handling this all so maturely. And for you too, well done for hanging in there!

Fruitygal · 23/08/2022 20:58

Did a little pre shopping trip round Sainsbury's today to check out things to consider what we need - just 30 mins but has a homeware section.

Saw lots made a couple if little purchases - towels were nice and soft ……. Lots of essential items 😂

Blimey!

I think I need to get mine a toaster. Not mentioned in the inventory and he can manage toast in his culinary repertoire.

Fruitygal · 23/08/2022 21:01

DD wants Ikea visit because her brothers did one 4/5 years ago ……like the draw string washing bag plus sharp large knifes there plus often a nice lamp. Otherwise used Sainsburys and JL

Delphigirl · 23/08/2022 21:03

That sounds like a really great plan and probably better than being down in Cornwall from scratch. Well done to her and you for getting through that. I’m sorry about your aunt. 💐

cheninblanc · 23/08/2022 21:25

Thank you everyone!! So to add she needed to update primark at work tonight in case of change of availability, and they've just offered to change her temporary evening contract to a permanent days contract around her hours studying. When one door closes another certainly opens I'm sooooo thrilled for her!

EwwSprouts · 23/08/2022 21:27

@cheninblanc London sounds like it will suit her fabulously. As one door closes....

EwwSprouts · 23/08/2022 21:28

Cross post!!

singingstones · 23/08/2022 21:28

Amazing news chenin- sorry for what you've had to go through to get there but it sounds like a fantastic solution for your DD and definitely Falmouth's loss and London's gain!

Alsoplayspiccolo · 23/08/2022 21:28

Phew, chenin, she sounds like she’s going to be really happy next year but what a bloody marathon she’s been through with Falmouth!
Well done to you, and her, for getting through it AND bouncing back with a fabulous solution.

HarrietDVane · 23/08/2022 21:32

I'm glad you have a resolution @cheninblanc after such a rollercoaster ride! DD's plans sound brilliant!
