...water

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.

Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

I hope all that have had, are having and are to have post A level proms have a belting time! ⭐️
DD had her’s the other night, I dropped her and the post GCSE frock - that had hung in her wardrobe for 2 years - amongst school text books and other stuff, very early in the morning at the train station as I was going to work and she was off to her friends to get ‘glammed up’ 😂
At least I got a text the following day at 3am to say she was back from clubbing! 🤣
And the next day, whilst at work, she sent me several photographs of her in said GCSE frock, having a fabulous time at her A-level prom - quite emotional for me, given the ‘rug was pulled from under their feet’ in 2020.

crazycrofter · 01/07/2022 19:56

I dropped dd at her friend’s for pre’s earlier before her second prom. I asked her how come last week’s prom was such good value as it was a very posh hotel and she said three lads work there so they got a discount. This evening’s prom is a sit down meal at the Botanical Gardens for less than £40. I assume someone must have got a discount for this too!

Glad all the young people are enjoying themselves on holiday/partying etc!

mummyinbeds · 01/07/2022 20:59

@ProggyMat the good thing about having a DS who doesn't plan beyond the next 10 minutes is that he never thought about the year 11 prom so doesn't know he missed anything.

I'm envious of these cheaper proms. £50 here for a burger and a ride on the swan boats.

ProggyMat · 01/07/2022 21:25

@mummyinbeds Im envious ! 😂
I tried to delay the ‘darkening of any GCSE prom shop doorstep’ to a later date - as this long standing and fabulous thread will attest - but reluctantly succumbed earlier than I’d have liked.
I was then in the position of either paying the other half of the deposit that had been paid - largely by DD from Christmas money and wages from her part time job knowing that she wouldn’t have a prom to go to.

For me, seeing said frock (albeit in photos only) being trotted out was quite emotional for me given how DD felt about not being able to sit her exams.

NCTDN · 01/07/2022 21:48

I feel very envious of those who have had a proper prom.

PaddingtonPaddington · 01/07/2022 21:58

DD is also at prom this eve wearing the dress that was ready for the 2020 prom that never happened. She got her nails done for the first time ever as she’s a musician she has to keep them very short so has never bothered but seemed pleased to have them done. Also booked a haircut late afternoon and they did some lovely curls for her. She looked gorgeous. Proud mum moment. Definitely feels like the end of an era.
now I just need to keep awake to pick her up later…

icanbewhatiwant · 01/07/2022 22:54

@mummyinbeds ds's was £45 and all that included was a small glass of pimms.

Ds has been at another party tonight. Dh has just gone to collect him. They can't stay late as we have no public transport, so it's parents to collect. Ds will probably sleep all weekend. Then he starts his full time summer job 8am Monday morn. He hates getting up. So he's not going to like almost 3 months of being at work for 8am. 5 days a week. It's about a 15 min drive.

BlueMarigold · 01/07/2022 23:20

Great to read about all the parties and proms! Our teens deserve a break after all their hard work and getting through the last couple of years.

collywobble · 01/07/2022 23:23

@EspeciallyDeIighted it's been a long old slog and certainly hasn't come naturally at all to him especially the manoeuvres.

EspeciallyDeIighted · 01/07/2022 23:38

@collywobble and @Zebracat thank you, it seems it affects people differently. DS is great at backseat driving, he's always giving me directions, telling me to change lane, look out for that car that's about to pull out etc (we are out for several hours a week with me driving) so that will stand him in good stead, clutch and gears may be the problem and I think he should try a manual as he may need to be able to drive all sorts in his likely career area.

DD back from y11 prom, no pre or after party for her (she's not a houseparty type) but she loves a disco. It was at the school, it did feel a little sad that that was probably the last time we'll ever go there.

Oblomov22 · 02/07/2022 07:28

Ds's prom is on monday, ours seems to be more expensive @ £60, but they get 3 course meal at the most beautiful huge hotel in the next town, and a disco.
He went into the florist to order a flower. She told me he made her laugh, in 13 years no one had ever asked her / referred to it as a 'boutonniere'. I did say to him, love it's called a buttonhole.

icanbewhatiwant · 02/07/2022 08:43

@Oblomov22 is that Ds in the white suit? Very smart. Mine chose a pale grey. Dh asked why I let him buy such a stupid colour. I thought it looked great. He wanted pale blue but we had to go with what we could find in xxs.

Oblomov22 · 02/07/2022 08:50

icanbe Grin yes. His whole prom outfit is based on that picture, of Sean Connery as Bond.

Isthisjustnormal · 02/07/2022 09:05

Ds had prom last night too. Got back at5am after the after party, the after-after party and the party-in-a-park ;-) He’s not surfaced yet of course but sounds like a good time was had!! Ours was £40-45 iirc, not actually sure what it included other than food!

Monkey2001 · 02/07/2022 10:37

Our prom was £45 including 1 drink and a burger. It was at Bristol Zoo and they were able to look round the zoo, but it was not a good venue - half hour queue for drinks and they were treated like children - only allowed to buy one drink when they got to the front of queue (DS got one for GF and made do with water for himself) and were told off for minor silliness. A lot of his favourite teachers were there and there was good banter!

crazycrofter · 02/07/2022 11:20

Both of DD’s proms were organised by the students and no teachers were involved or attended! I told her not to be too late as we’ve got her 18th do today but she was back about 4.30 after the after-party and clubbing 😩

crazycrofter · 02/07/2022 11:32

Dd got a lift home from a friend’s mum to save the Uber cost - that’s commitment from the parents!!

Zebracat · 02/07/2022 12:38

Ours got collected decorously by DH at Midnight. Not surfaced yet so I don’t know how it went.

ealingwestmum · 03/07/2022 07:31

Hope the 18th bash all went well Crazy! Belated happy birthday to her 🍾

Heifer · 03/07/2022 11:19

@crazycrofter Happy 18th to your DD - how did the do go? Had she recovered from her night out? :-)

Monkey2001 · 03/07/2022 12:37

Happy birthday @crazycrofter DD!

crazycrofter · 03/07/2022 14:36

Thanks! Her birthday was a month ago actually and she celebrated on the day with just us and then went out with friends in the evening, but we decided to save the family do til after exams. We were all rather tired as for some reason I couldn’t sleep til she was back from prom/after party at 4 (I’m usually able to sleep through!) but she enjoyed the day, there was way too much food but that’s always a good thing! We gave her the photo book too, as it didn’t come in time for her birthday. She seemed to appreciate it and there weren’t too many cringey photos! There’s a particular ‘bad eyebrow’ era which she hates seeing photos of 😂

Benjispruce4 · 03/07/2022 16:34

Hello everyone! 👋🏻
Introduced to this thread via the university 2019-2022 thread which was so helpful . Now DD1 has graduated I feel the need for similar support for DD2.
She’s hoping to get grades for York in September to study Sociology. She took Sociology, English Language and History at A Level.

icanbewhatiwant · 03/07/2022 16:36

@Benjispruce4 you found us 😄

Benjispruce4 · 03/07/2022 16:36

I see the talk of prom. DD has hers in a couple of weeks. £40 for a welcome drink and hot dog! 😏It’s at a naice ( but overrated and overpriced venue) but she did miss her Y11 prom so it’s fair I guess.
