This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.

Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

DS is at his prom - his suit arrived yesterday. I got to iron his shirt this afternoon 😂

He went to a pre prom gathering at a friends house and then DH went over there and drove some of them in his Saab convertible (luckily it wasn’t raining).

Think prom was £35 which covered food and I think some drinks. DS will probably go into town afterwards (ends at 11:30) and luckily DH is on picking up duty.

icanbewhatiwant · 30/06/2022 22:25

Most of your dc's proms are less than ds's, We are just paying for the venue. It's a wedding venue but nothing special. It's not near anything, so Ds can't go on to somewhere else without being driven there. I hope he's not very late. I am going to have my shower get ready for bed. I won't collect him in pj's though incase he wants me to collect someone else 😂

No Prom for Dd but just spent a chunk of money on new dress and shoes, sparkly 18 tiara and sash for her for next week 18th birthday afternoon tea in garden. I got her a Kate Spade (mock chanel style) handbag from the outlet a couple of months back. Hopefully she will feel nice and have a special day. Fingers crossed weather OK 👍

We had some good advice when buying things for DDs prom which are all still sitting here unused due to the first dreaded lockdown Sad
Make sure the bag doesn't have catchy sides that will grip onto the dress and pull at the fabric. Apparently loads of them will. I had on a summer dress the other day and it did that to mine. It wasn't even like a satin type fabric either.

DS out on a night out last night and lost his provisional driving licence. driving test in 12 days. I despair ! When do they mature and take responsibility?

ealingwestmum · 01/07/2022 08:19

Ah collywobble, not sure says she who has gone through at least 11 oyster zip card replacements since Y7!

The good thing is that a replacement provisional isn’t too hard for them to re-issue, as everything’s in the system.

collywobble · 01/07/2022 08:33

@ealingwestmum that's good I thought it might take a while. DS has dyspraxia and has always been very much one for losing things and being completely disorganised but I can't put this down to that I think he was just very drunk unfortunately.

MirandaWest · 01/07/2022 08:48

DD applied for her provisional licence recently (will be 17 in September) and it took less than a week and that was a completely new one so hopefully your DS will get his replacement in good time for the test.

How's he found learning to drive? Mine is dyspraxic, hasn't started lessons yet but I am a little concerned about it. Having said that his coordination isn't bad, he plays lots of ball sports.

crazycrofter · 01/07/2022 09:10

I took dd out driving for only the second time yesterday - she’s been learning since before Christmas!! Admittedly it was raining and it was rush hour and I got her to drive back through the city, but it was the most terrifying experience ever! There were roughly 6 roundabouts and 8 sets of lights to navigate, including lights on a steep incline where she stalled about 6 times and nearly rolled back into the car behind. She said it was very good practice! I can’t see how she can possibly be ready to pass her test in Sept! I will avoid rush hour in future!

Oblomov22 · 01/07/2022 11:21

I'm loving all the prom talk.

Crazy I wouldn't have liked that. I had it so easy with ds1, it was end of lockdown, so quiet.

Fiddlersgreen · 01/07/2022 11:51

No prom here, DS’s college just don’t seem to do them. He’s not bothered although I expect he would have gone with his girlfriend if C there had been one.

DS is currently treating our home like a hotel, he is working most evenings to his credit but when he is not working he is always out, with his girlfriend or friends or the gym or football etc. I haven’t personally seen him since Monday and he’s neglecting all of his chores.
Is this normal? It’s really getting me but I don’t know if I’m overreacting. This week he has only been home between the hours of 1am to around 10am and that is all spent sleeping

mummyinbeds · 01/07/2022 12:56

DS seemed to enjoy his Prom last night. He didn't drink and was up this morning to take DD to school and DH to the station on the way to his new job. I'm sure this was a one off display of maturity. ( I did find his suit thrown in a heap on his bedroom floor)

icanbewhatiwant · 01/07/2022 13:36

I picked Ds up at midnight last night. He'd enjoyed himself. There were some silly/fun type awards given out, Ds came second in "person most likely to still get asked for ID age 40" 🤣

He has another party this eve. not far away. He said it was quite sad to think he probably won't ever see a lot of them again. Obviously he will his close friends. He thinks his full time job might start Monday.

MirandaWest · 01/07/2022 13:39

I haven't yet seen DS since last night but he stayed at a friend's house so I suspect it went on pretty late. At some point I suspect he will ask if someone can pick him up.

We're travelling down to Heathro tomorrow before flying to America on Sunday morning so I suspect he'll be seeing his girlfriend at some point later on today.

Hattifatteners · 01/07/2022 14:42

@MirandaWest trip to America sounds exiting.
DD had a blast at at her prom last night. We paid £38, the venue was a boating club by the Thames and included some food and two drinks.

singingstones · 01/07/2022 16:46

DS has just headed out to his, I expect things will get messy later on but he looks smart as of right now. He'll be back in the early hours, then tomorrow afternoon going to a friend's house to stay over before leaving for Greece at 4am on Sunday. Thankfully friend's mum has a minibus so she is taking them to the airport and we are off the hook.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 01/07/2022 17:34

DD has just left for her prom. She’s going to a friend’s for pre drinks, then clubbing afterwards and staying with her BFF.

Im feeling a little bereft at the thought that this is actually the end of school forever.

EddieHowesBlackandWhiteArmy · 01/07/2022 17:55

My DD has also just been dropped off for pre’s before her prom. Sniff. End of an era.

Piggywaspushed · 01/07/2022 18:28

DS has just tried his prom suit on. He looks so smart, bless him.

Piggywaspushed · 01/07/2022 18:28

Not so much with his Spurs shirt on under it....

Seeline · 01/07/2022 18:53

Just dropped DD and her boyfriend at their prom - looked fab. No after party, so pick up at 11 which suits me. We've still got their graduation evening on Monday so not quite over yet.

Heifer · 01/07/2022 18:53

@Piggywaspushed love it - my eldest nephew (he was about 8 at the time) wore his man utd shirt under his white shirt and waistcoat when he was a page boy when I got married -I'd bought him the MU previously so he knew I wouldn't mind.

DD have a great time in Spain - her friends appt is lovely with their own small pool. Hoping she will be well rested when she comes back.

Heifer · 01/07/2022 18:55

Lovely to hear re the proms, here a lot of people have pre parties and after parties - I think it's a good thing DD is away tbh as not so bad she isn't getting one - although she was invited as a guest to someone elses but can't go - that wouldn't have been the same as having her own though anyway.

Zebracat · 01/07/2022 19:33

Mines gone off to prom looking gorgeous. Her friend in a very similar dress, quite by accident. They both looked wonderful.
@EspeciallyDeIighted my ds2 has quite severe dyspraxia, I spent ages talking his driving instructor thru potential problems. He came back after the 1st lesson and told me he was a natural, he passed 1st time after 10 lessons and no practicing. I’m also dyspraxic and my learning to drive journey was a little bumpier. But I got there.
