This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades. It's all relative!

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may continue down various pathways ( employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will find a thread within the Further Ed board.

Possibly a move to Parent of Adult Children Board in future? Post Results?

Computer Science was good, and we’ve waved her off on her holidays. Phew. Please please let the plane have all its staff etc.

singingstones · 24/06/2022 14:16

Great to hear of more DC finishing and heading off to various celebrations and fun times. Sorry to hear about the appendix, awful for you all.

On the subject of heads in sand regarding admin, DS has just found a month-old email from his insurance choice inviting him to apply for accommodation. It's first come, first served. On the plus side he has finally requested release of his child trust fund, been on his to do list since January. He needs the money for his holiday starting a week on Sunday 🙈

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 24/06/2022 16:17

Hi all,

I'm sorry been a bit awol work has been busy and stressful. I'm starting to get physical symptoms like chest pains and ear ringing. Not great 😕

Are we all finished now...with A levels at least?

Dd has asked permission to stay over at Boyfriend's tonight 😬😶I did the mature thing and started ranting about NOT wanting to be a Grandmother anytime soon so she better be sensible thank you very much.

Our child trust fund has lost so much value over the past three months that it is worth less than we have put in. I'm not best pleased tbh. There was no opportunity to just stop and cash in the stocks and shares element and because Dd is only 18 in July she misses out.

DS's has gone down too Orange - we have never added to it but if he'd withdrawn the money in January he would have been £100+ richer. And he would have had it in time for his holiday Smile

singingstones · 24/06/2022 16:39

PS hope you start to feel better soon

crazycrofter · 24/06/2022 16:41

@OrangeCinnamonCroissant dd’s lost nearly £200 (out of less than £4k) in the week after her birthday! I’m not sure if this was the right thing to do but I advised her to take a portion in cash (£1k in her case) and put it in savings account for when she needs it and then leave the rest in a stocks and shares ISA in the hope that over the next few years it will go up again. But of course it could go down a lot further! I just felt it didn’t make sense to cash it all in as it’s on the way down. I hope she doesn’t blame me if it just keeps on going down 😬

Lots of good news in our household today, DS2 got the hospital job and also got into National Youth Choir. DS1 has FINALLY secured a house for next year, not the best location but good enough, and very well appointed - 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms - he is massively relieved to have a home for next year as St Andrews is ridiculously over-crowded at the moment.

DS1 now says that if Newcastle offered him a place for this year he would ask whether he could defer it as he is really excited about the job.

crazycrofter · 24/06/2022 17:44

That’s brilliant news all round @Monkey2001 ! I think your ds2 might be right about taking the job regardless as it will be great experience. Where does he have to go for the youth choir and is that easier done from home? You must be relieved about the St Andrew’s accommodation.

Oblomov22 · 24/06/2022 18:09

Well done to all finishers.
Good luck to icanbe with RS on Tuesday.

ealingwestmum · 24/06/2022 18:16

Those are excellent reasons to celebrate Monkey, enjoy the weekend. Your family deserves good breaks for sure.

ealingwestmum · 24/06/2022 18:19

Welcome Pangolinfan!

Monkey2001 · 24/06/2022 18:28

I have just had the weirdest insurance experience. DS2 is in Cornwall with the car he and DS1 are insured for and DS1 wants to drive somewhere whilst DS2 is away. I looked into adding him onto the policy for our fairly new family estate car and adding him on for 6 days results in a REFUND of £21.29! So I can get money back for adding a person on. I will never understand insurance!!

NYC are all face to face now, three London courses with a couple of concerts at Royal Academy and Royal Albert Hall, including concert with Royal Philharmonic, then a summer residential somewhere. He needs to check it fits with the work commitments before he accepts, but would be a fabulous experience.

Oblomov22 · 24/06/2022 18:38

Well done Monkey.

Oooh I had that when I added ds2 to a car dd1 and ds1 were insured on. They gave me an £89 discount! I said to the guy in the phone “Why?” He said “I don’t know, do you want me to look into it?” and I said “NO!” In case they changed their mind.

I think insurers just guess a number.

ExtremelyDedicated · 24/06/2022 18:47

When I split up with my ex BF I phoned up to take him off my insurance and they said “that’ll be £90 extra on your premium” as the more drivers there are the lower the risk. I left him on.

Isthisjustnormal · 24/06/2022 18:55

Awww, amazing news @Monkey2001 !

Zebracat · 24/06/2022 19:01

Oh @Monkey2001 ,so pleased for you. Think it’s been a bit shit for you and your kid, frankly, lovely that they are finally getting some breaks.

PaddingtonPaddington · 24/06/2022 19:19

@Monkey2001 great news!! Well done to your DS.

Volterra · 24/06/2022 19:42

@Monkey2001 what wonderful news, so pleased for him !

Takeittotheboss · 24/06/2022 19:55

Well done to all @Monkey2001

craggyrat · 24/06/2022 19:57

Great news @Monkey2001 !

singingstones · 24/06/2022 19:58

Great news Monkey - what a lovely turnaround for your DS to be so excited about his year that he would ask to defer. He deserves all the excitement and will be in a super strong position to apply next year. Or should I say apply in 4 months' time 😱 how did that come around so quickly?

KingscoteStaff · 24/06/2022 20:14

That’s great @Monkey2001 - well done your boy!
DD said AQA Biology was hardish, but essay questions were really nice.

Oh well, put it all in a box for 6 weeks…
