Thread 31 Covid Cohort - Hopping through Easter and Revision

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/04/2022 13:15

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

I've made this one a little bit earlier as things are so busy, at home and on thread, so please feel free to use up previous thread first

Great news about the theory test seeline.

heifer Glad you got the diagnosis sorted - the help at uni is great. I think a lot of us have struggled to get diagnosis at school - with my step son we got told they only look into dyslexia if the kids are two years behind yet their verbal contribution is good. A lot must slip through the net with that approach and it’s very frustrating (my DH had been asking for years and dismissed by multiple teachers).

Leaving DS for a long weekend this weekend, please pray for our house (and that he remembers we have a dog)

sofakingcool · 15/04/2022 11:38

Revision is going ok, DS has got off to a good start with a really good revision plan which he's typed up and put a copy in his room and the kitchen. Roll on the end of exams!

Heifer · 15/04/2022 11:39

Thanks everyone for your comments. DD went out clubbing last night and returned at 4.00am (pretty sober). One of her friends who lives in the countryside drove them all - made multiliple journey from Liverpool to the Wirral with them all! DD was very appreciative and loves having friends that can drive - still not ready herself to go back to having lessons - although once her car is fixed next week wants to get back into it with her Dad.

She is obviously happy with the diagnosis as she told her friendship group on whatsapp (she doesn't usually share personal info). She said they were all pleased for her. I will now be trying to find some evidence of late applications for extra time etc in case school give the blanket "it's too late" response. It may well prove to be too late but I want the school to at least try.

Had a long chat with DD yesterday re revision. It turns out that although I didn't think she was doing enough and was procrasinating it turns up she is doing more than I thought. She deliberately wasn't starting until late in the day, she wasn't procastingating but getting everything ready to enable her to start (tidy room, shower, sort stuff out etc) so I get it. She doesn't want to revise at midday, she wants to start at 3/4.00pm and is doing at approx 4-6 hrs a day - split into small chunks. To be fair I should have trusted her, she has always worked hard, it's just that she is awake from 11.00amish (not this morning obviously ;-) so I think it's wasted time if she doesn't start until 3/4pm but it is was works for her. Needless to say I won't be mentioning it again. She was in a very receptive mood yesterday so had a chat about uni too. She was anxious about the food so I showed her the 3 weeks menu at Nottingham and she loved it - found something every day that she would happily eat! bonus :-)

Anyone got any nice plans for Easter? Nothing going on here. Will just be a usual Sunday. We were planning on going out but we only have the van available at the moment with 2 seats so put paid to that.

Heifer · 15/04/2022 11:41

@sofakingcool - DH and I went out for the whole day recently and was amazed to discover that not only had DD remembered to feed the dogs, let them outside but actually walked them too! so there is hope :-)

Oh good!

He's usually pretty good, but she's a quiet little thing, not the type to wake him up barking at the back door to go out for a wee. Saying that, she's pretty lazy so will probably join him for long lay ins.. Grin

crazycrofter · 15/04/2022 16:44

@heifer your DD’s friend is so kind! I wonder if she regretted offering all those lifts?!

Ds and friend came back at 11.30 last night buzzing because ds had confronted some balaclava-clad lads who were terrorising the train carriage. Apparently he intervened when they abused an old man and some middle aged women and so they threatened to stab him Shock. All was ok in the end, as a man chased them out of the station after they started to follow ds and friend home. And one of DD’s friends happened to be in the same carriage and texted her to say how well he’d handled himself! But really I’d rather he keep away from trouble Hmm

@heifer the Nottingham menus do look quite tasty and varied don’t they!

Wheresthebeach · 15/04/2022 17:45

😱 @crazycrofter How frightening. Great job by your DS but I get how you feel. Have the police been told?

Piggywaspushed · 15/04/2022 18:16

Wow crazy.

Heifer · 15/04/2022 18:29

@crazycrofter - apparently her friend loved it as she got to practice driving under the tunnel with other people in the car - and has offered to do it again next time they go! None of them seem to drink much when they go out to Liverpool (unlike parties) so it's not as if she has to drive a load of drunken friends home. DD said she doesn't like drinking "in town" as it's not a good look - from a parent point of view makes make happier as it's safer too - save the drinking to house parties :-)

Re your DS - that must give you mixed feelings - proud but worried too.

Oblomov22 · 15/04/2022 18:49

Heifer and Crazy I quite fancied the Nottingham menu myself!
If I never cooked another spaghetti and meatballs for dc again, it would be too soon.
Do they let visiting mums in? Wink

crazycrofter · 15/04/2022 19:42

@Oblomov22 yes they do! Dh and I ate in the Rutland dining room at lunchtime on the offer day. It was very nice!

@Wheresthebeach I’m not sure, someone should probably have rung the transport police at the time. As their faces were covered I guess they can’t be identified. They got off at the same stop as ds and his friend though, so I guess they live nearby and might spot ds again Hmm Ds said they were small and skinny, but a knife overrides that.

Heifer · 15/04/2022 20:29

@crazycrofter & @Oblomov22 There is no way on this earth that DD would let me eat in the dinning room with her! :-) However, the chat re how often people would be visiting prompted me to chat to her about visiting and coming home etc. I said we would take the lead from her. I would like to visit but understood that she might just want her space etc and that's ok. She said - no I want you to come and visit me - you can take me out for dinner and shopping!

crazycrofter · 15/04/2022 20:55

Dd just said of course we can visit as long as dh doesn’t do anything embarrassing Grin

Heifer · 16/04/2022 10:19

@crazycrofter - best leave him at home then :-) There is the odd day that my breathing seems to embarrass/annoy DD so here's hoping for a good day ;-)

Heifer · 16/04/2022 10:48

Just interested from another thread I'm reading - is anyone's DD/DS planning on living at home whilst at uni? I don't remember anyone mentioning it that's all.

Oblomov22 · 16/04/2022 11:17

Ds1 confirmed his Nottingham accommodation. But he claims they didn't ask for the £250 deposit. Seems odd.

Considered it for about it for about 10 seconds as quite a few Unis Dd was considering are less than an hour train ride ! But Dd needs the halls experience. She can be quite intolerant and a little bit entitled at times. In many ways she can be quite mature e.g with public transport , doing her washing etc but definitely needs to learn to survive socially. I've no doubt that we will get moaning phonecalls about flat dramas! She might surprise us ! Probably the stuff she does at home (like refuse to wash up) she wont do elsewhere Hmm She never forgave us for sending her away on Brownie Camp and thereafter avoided sleepovers etc.Confused

...oh and her subject (Music) has lots of on campus activity...although lots of kids from this area go to places like ACM and BIMM in Brighton and seem to manage 🤔

We didn't need to pay deposit either - it mentioned paying it later.
EwwSprouts · 16/04/2022 12:24

DS is keen to get away! He has two friends through sport who are at the local university but both have done a year in uni accom.

Heifer · 16/04/2022 12:33

@OrangeCinnamonCroissant - lol at brownie camp grudge. DD can hold a grudge for a long time too.... There is no way I wanted DD to go local let along live at home (remind me that come Sept)... I was worried that her friendship group would all apply for Liverpool unis, DD would have lived out but she would have stayed with current friendshp group, same hockey team etc etc, she needs to go away to move to the next phase in her life I feel. I do understand that for some it would be a financial reason that they need to live at home but I do think they must miss out on so much.

@EwwSprouts - same, we know quite a few hockey players who have chosen Liverpool but are living out.

Oblomov22 · 16/04/2022 12:58

Thanks Heifer.

Heifer · 16/04/2022 13:18

@Oblomov22 did he go for Rutland in the end?

Oblomov22 · 16/04/2022 14:26

Yes. He's thrilled with the catered option, that I persuaded him because of you lot, and his friend didn't choose and friend is now gutted.
