1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/04/2022 13:15

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

I've made this one a little bit earlier as things are so busy, at home and on thread, so please feel free to use up previous thread first

@crazycrofter

I think ours are in stocks and shares. I reckon we’ve put in around £2400 over the years and it’s worth double that now. Is that ok or just expected?
That sounds good actually! Looking at Dd account it seems to have gained only 10% overall on what we have put in over the years it is hard to tell as the account got moved im rubbish with translating this kind of thing

I just looked at foresters and I can move ds3's (age 13) to theirs if I wanted. I don't know if it'll make more than it has in the bank. They charge 1.5% it's not much but that puts me off a bit. I do have money invested myself, with prudential. It's only in a low risk investment. I watched my investment plummet during the pandemic. But it has gone back up and over the original investment. My premium bonds do quite well as a tax free investment. Though obviously it doesn't increase in value.

Heifer · 14/04/2022 09:45

DDs is with Foresters - I think that is where it started originally. We didn't add to it at all so it's now £490. DD has got some inheritance from my Mum although haven't handed it over yet - just want to wait until after the Summer so she doesn't spend it all on holidaying/partying...

Seeline · 14/04/2022 10:07

Bit of thread magic needed for this afternoon please - DD has her theory test....

DDs CTF isn't much more than the original £250. DS was too old to have one, and my Dad died just before DD was born so we didn't really look into the ins and outs of how they worked as minds were on other things. There is a bit in a savings account I have had for her though.

icanbewhatiwant · 14/04/2022 10:08

@Heifer that is only slightly up on ds's amount that was in nationwide. So maybe not worth moving ds3's then. Though if it can be transferred to an ISA at 18 it's quite useful. Ds2 had to take his out the CTF. But he already has a nationwide account. So it was easy to move it across. He added £100 to it and invested it with a stocks and shares company online.

icanbewhatiwant · 14/04/2022 10:14

I did open a savings account for them all with N&P I added birthday money and a small inheritance each into that account. I just kept the CTF separate. I saved incase they went to university, the dc's also had a small amount of inheritance each into their savings. Ds1 hasn't used his. Ds2 will need to use it if he goes abroad for the third year.

Wheresthebeach · 14/04/2022 10:49

crazy that sounds great to me. We had put some money away for DD and have had nothing like that return.

Fiddlersgreen · 14/04/2022 12:44

DS’ child trust fund was put into a nationwide account but not a stocks one so it’s just grown from a bit of birthday/Christmas money and my mum made some payments into it. It’s now around £3k but we need to work out how he can access it!

crazycrofter · 14/04/2022 13:07

Actually I think I remembered the amount wrong - it’s £3800!

Heifer · 14/04/2022 13:43

@Seeline- MN good luck vibes being sent your DDs way. Good luck

KingscoteStaff · 14/04/2022 13:55

Go go @Seeline’s girl! Don’t forget to double press on the hazard perception - lots of people press too early…

Seeline · 14/04/2022 16:48

It worked - theory test passed 😁

ChristopherTracy · 14/04/2022 16:49

woo hoo @Seeline

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 14/04/2022 17:10

Great news @seeline!

Excellent - well done Seelines DD.

Had a phone call today re DDs Dyslexia test. Turns out she is Dyslexic after all... She looked so relieved. Also relieved because they didn't really look into being on the spectrum as the Dyslexia diagnosis is enough to get DD help she wants at Uni - and I am hoping at school. The assessor said that the school didn't do all the tests they could have doneand if they had done it would have definitely picked it up last year. and it would have shown in Yr 7 too when she first had a test at school... Explained to me that when DD was doing the 4 hours of testing the other week she could see just how hard DD has to work on a daily basis. She described her like a swan, all graceful above water but her legs going really fast to keep her afloat :-( She felt that because DD is bright and very hardworking/conscienious the school has just ignored it.

She is going to email me so I can discuss with school (got a meeting already booked in 1st dayback). But will be sending a long report later to use for DSA for uni. Well worth the £450.

ealingwestmum · 14/04/2022 18:43

Heifer, it must be such a relief for you both to have had such constructive feedback from the review. Whilst well overdue through omission, at least she can move forward properly now.

Heifer · 14/04/2022 18:57

Thanks @ealingwestmum. Got to admit that I'm feeling pretty crappy along with the relief. DD told me numerous times she thought she was dyslexic and I said no, the school would have mentioned in when you did the test in Yr7 (everyone took a test)..... Also because she was doing so well, but it's only now I realise just how hard she has to work at it.

Piggywaspushed · 14/04/2022 19:21

Interesting and helpful news heifer. It's such a shame people have to jump through such hoops to find things out. My school doesn't even do dyslexia testing so anyone who wants or needs to know ahs to go through GP and pay £££s.

DS and I are just back from London. We went to see Witness for the Prosecution whihc was good fun.

We also took in Pizza Express and a wander to the HoP where we were interviewed for Slovakian News!!

We went and looked at the Covid Memorial ... man, that's a long wall . Really brings you up short..

Oblomov22 · 14/04/2022 19:42

Well done Seeline dd.

crazycrofter · 14/04/2022 19:49

Good news @heifer, but frustrating that it’s taken so long. It’s not your fault - it’s natural to trust the school to pick things up. Hope she can access the support she needs for uni.

We finally had an appointment for ds today and got a prescription for new ADHD meds (Elvanse). I really hope they help with his GCSEs. He’s doing fine with revision because he does it in ten minute chunks with lots of breaks, but concentrating for a two hour exam is a different thing entirely.

What did Slovakian TV ask you @Piggywaspushed?Grin I’ve been trying to think of a couple of trips to do with the kids in the summer as we’ve not got a holiday booked. They’ve got various camps and festivals but nothing with us. I suggested seeing Hamilton in London and DD’s eyes lit up. Ds wasn’t so enthusiastic though, so maybe that will be a girl trip. If anyone has any ideas let me know!

Piggywaspushed · 14/04/2022 19:52

The Slovaks seem to be interested in our cost of living crisis so we had to say whether we had noticed it!

EwwSprouts · 14/04/2022 20:31

@Heifer That's a result! I would have relied on the experience of school too as they did do yr7 tests.

@Seeline Great news.

DS CTF has barely grown as nobody added anything. But my parents have put bits into a separate building society account so he has a little emergency pot.

EasterDecorations · 14/04/2022 20:57

@Seeline great news on the theory test!

@Heifer I had to go private for DD’s dyslexia assessment, I was pushed into it after a parents evening when I was told yet again that she just needed to work harder and then got home and had her burst into tears saying how hard she did work. There were a few other clues but the school refused to listen. With hindsight it was completely bloody obvious. Very mixed feelings as a parent though, I remember getting the same phone call as you and feeling a mixture of relief and sadness. Same when DS got his autism diagnosis even though I knew in my heart. Flowers

Cantonet · 14/04/2022 21:34

@Crazycrofter Elvanse is good - 3 of mine are on it now. It does take a while to adjust to the right dose though.Mine started at 20mg & went up in 10mg Intervals - adjusting the dose every 2 weeks. Ds2 is on 70mg, dd2 on 50mg & ds2 on 40mg.

@Heifer its good you've discovered the dyslexia now. DS was discovered at 9 but his ADHD wasn't discovered until very recently. Don't kick yourself for not discovering it earlier. It's very easy to miss these things. I swear it's in a schools interest not to discover these things.

DS had his DSA assessment today.
The assessor came out & he had tattoos , a black eye & tight jeans on.
But he was efficient, not chatty but explanatory about all the software he might need. He's put him forward for 2 hours face to face help a week which will be good.
DS then said to me afterwards I was very judgemental about how he looked 😳

ealingwestmum · 14/04/2022 22:31

Great news on the theory Seeline!
