Thread 31 Covid Cohort - Hopping through Easter and Revision

1000 replies

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 07/04/2022 13:15

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

previous Thread 30

I've made this one a little bit earlier as things are so busy, at home and on thread, so please feel free to use up previous thread first

Yes Nard, just put down his current favourite, it really doesn't matter.

Nard75 · 13/04/2022 18:13

Thanks @Oblomov22 to get DS to do anything in terms of admin wise is a real struggle. He had no interest in doing the student finance and when I asked him if he wanted me to do it he said you might as well as you normally do everything so I have started it but given him all the log in details. I just can't seem to do anything right. He hasn't firmed yet Warwick has been his choice all along but now he is saying he is going to firm Birmingham the reason being I don't think he wants to leave home and it all becoming real now.

Piggywaspushed · 13/04/2022 18:14

Oh getting a brace off is a fantastic moment! Free at last!!

Zebracat · 13/04/2022 18:58

We got some premium bonds a few years ago and they have given me so much pleasure. I don’t do the lottery but like to daydream about a big win, so premium bonds give me that frisson without costing money. Thinking of @Piggywaspushed birthday dilemma. They seem such a throwback somehow.

Piggywaspushed · 13/04/2022 19:12

Oh Premium Bonds!!

I got a dressing gown for my 18th...

Don't forget to hunt down Child Trust Funds if you have one. We had to go through a right old rigmarole to track down DS1's a few years back.

NCTDN · 13/04/2022 19:15

@singingstones

Maybe an escape room, Piggy?

DS told me yesterday that he would like to suggest an Apple Watch as his going away to university present Hmm

A going away to uni present? HmmThink my finances will be well and truly maxxed out by then. Going away to uni present will be a door stop and a duvet!
Zebracat · 13/04/2022 19:30

A friend of mine bought her daughter an umbrella for her 18th, seriously underwhelming. I got an ironing board one year. And the cries of “but it’s a Beldray “ did not lessen my tears. I’ve bought myself a present every year since.

Zebracat · 13/04/2022 19:35

I’ve just had a horrible thing happen. We were enjoying a rare takeaway curry after a busy day, when I got something very hard. At 1st I thought it was a tooth, but actually it was a small snail. So upset. Should we tell them? I have a horror of being accused of making things up..

singingstones · 13/04/2022 19:36

I couldn't agree more! And a pillow if he's lucky

singingstones · 13/04/2022 19:38

Oh no Zebra! Envy
I probably wouldn't bother to tell them but I wouldn't be going there again. I bet the snail was a bit nonplussed!

My husband has gone to tell them. They need to establish how it got in. We certainly won’t be having their food again. Up to that point it was all tasting so good. He finished his. I couldn’t have eaten any more for any payment. So gross.

Piggywaspushed · 13/04/2022 19:53

Vom.

Nard75 · 13/04/2022 20:26

@Zebracat don't blame you I don't think I would've had anymore either. I would definitely complain and like you say you won't be eating from there again.

Oblomov22 · 13/04/2022 21:43

Oh dear Zebra. 🤮
Agree that a door stop and a duvet is about as far as budget should go.

crazycrofter · 13/04/2022 22:12

Yuk @Zebracat, I think that might put me off takeaways for life Shock

I’ve located DD’s trust fund and I’m pleasantly surprised at its value - nearly £5k. I just hope she doesn’t burn through it!

@Nard75 I hope he makes a decision soon. I’m not sure if you can do the finance application yet if he’s not sure whether he’ll be living away or at home as that affects the amount of maintenance loan they get.

NCTDN · 13/04/2022 22:23

Haha crazy DDs is still at £250!

Wheresthebeach · 13/04/2022 22:47

Oh zebra how revolting. You poor thing!

Heifer · 14/04/2022 01:32

We haven't added anything into DDs and it's £454. Have lost the letter that tells DD how to claim it though so will need to look into that.
icanbewhatiwant · 14/04/2022 07:47

Ds2 has told me off for putting his child trust fund in nationwide instead of stocks and shares. His had gone up to £400 his mates all had much more. I have thought of moving ds3's to a stocks and shares type account to see if does any better.

OrangeCinnamonCroissant · 14/04/2022 07:55

The amount made on stocks and shares through Foresters is disappointing @icanbewhatiwant.

Piggywaspushed · 14/04/2022 08:01

DS's is the government on in One Family' which is what it became. He has got nearly 4k! Paid in £200 pa.

crazycrofter · 14/04/2022 08:01

I think ours are in stocks and shares. I reckon we’ve put in around £2400 over the years and it’s worth double that now. Is that ok or just expected?

EasterDecorations · 14/04/2022 08:09

We put ours in stocks and shares CTFs (Co-op which became Foresters). DS's has converted into an ISA automatically. My parents added a bit here and there so its hard to tell how much it has increased by. I was a bit reluctant to add too much to it with them getting it automatically at 18 so have saved for them in childrens savings accounts instead which I hold in trust but the interest dropped to virtually nothing when they turned 16. I think I might start myself a stocks and shares ISA this year, I have a very old one which increases quite nicely but I haven't paid in to it for years. I think it's time I became a bit less conservative with my attitude to risk around savings and investments.
