Thread 27 Covid Cohort Snow or Like Spring? Let's Do This Thing!

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 21/01/2022 14:21

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Surprised I’m the first in Grin. Thank you @OrangeCinnamonCocktail

Isthisjustnormal · 21/01/2022 19:15

@Piggywaspushed: just read your sad news on the last thread. Hope you and your Ds are ok and good that the school have good support in place. So desperately sad that young people have such heavy burdens to bear. Ds has been struggling a bit over the last few days and I’m going to go and give him a big hug having read that.

Hattifatteners · 21/01/2022 19:25

Thank you for the new thread @Orangecinnamon21
What terrible news @Piggywaspushed. I hope your DS is OK? I can't think of anything worse than losing your child that way.
Congratulations to those with new offers. DD is still waiting...

ealingwestmum · 21/01/2022 19:28

Thank you for new thread Orange

And for the well wishes for DD Orange. 22Newnames, Delphi and everyone earlier. It’s really appreciated.

Yes, always a horrible yet timely reminder to us all to really observe our DC. And let some of the petty stuff go quickly - that one is addressed to me personally.

EwwSprouts · 21/01/2022 19:38

@Piggywaspushed How devastating for the family and friends. So young and utterly heart-breaking.

PaddingtonPaddington · 21/01/2022 19:39

Thanks for the new thread @OrangeCinnamonCocktail. Great offer for your DD from RH for music (missed that somehow on the last thread). Good luck with the upcoming auditions.

@ealingwestmum congrats on the offer.

DD had final driving lesson today and is finally feeling more confident for the test. I’ll take her out over the weekend and have everything crossed for her for next week.

Monkey2001 · 21/01/2022 19:54

@22newnames, DS1's GF's best friend sounds like another distressing connection. I can't imagine how these poor kids can think things are that bad.

Piggy is there a mass histeria affect that normalises it within the school community if this is the second time in 6 months. Unthinkable! I hope the school has really good interventions in place for anybody else at risk.

EwwSprouts · 21/01/2022 19:54

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail Thanks for the new thread. You're so quick to spot our need!

Congratulations on the new offers.
@Zebracat How lovely that your DD wants to celebrate the anniversary with you. That's some achievement with a teen!

22Newnames · 21/01/2022 19:56

Thanks orange and singing 😊

Piggywaspushed · 21/01/2022 20:00

I know clusters can happen monkey but I think it is unlikely in this case .

Thanks for the kind words, all , and thanks for the shiny new thread orange.

22Newnames · 21/01/2022 20:14

Yes Monkey, it sounds like a distant connection when you write it down but watching DS1 put his suit on to attend the funeral and his tales afterwards of talking to the bereaved father were heartbreaking. It is the closest person to him but sadly I think it is the third, maybe fourth person he knows over the past few years. It seems to be so much more prevalent now than a couple of decades ago which is horribly sad.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 21/01/2022 20:37

Thanks for the offer day info, mummyinbeds. When DD went back to try registering for just English, the email with the link had disappeared Confused
I think she’s going to have to email admissions, or wait for a response to her previous email.

Decorhate · 21/01/2022 20:37

@Piggywaspushed That is such sad news. I remember you posting about the previous death.

We had a near miss at the school I work at a few years ago. It shook the whole community & some staff were traumatised for a long time. The conversations with other students in the aftermath revealed that they felt under pressure in so many ways that had not been appreciated. Social media certainly plays a part.

One of the things I found out was that for boys in particular there may be no history of feeling low etc, it’s very often a response to an emotional crisis such as a relationship break up.

I really don’t think it’s a new problem. I remember several suicides amongst male teens & young men when I was at school decades ago. Though back then if was usually unemployment & lack of opportunities causing problems.

I agree with @ealingwestmum about reminding ourselves that our kids happiness & well being are most important.

BlueMarigold · 21/01/2022 20:41

Thank you for the new thread

Volterra · 21/01/2022 20:48

Thank you very much Orange

Piggy how incredibly sad, I am so sorry.

NCTDN · 21/01/2022 21:08

I can't imagine how low some people are feeling to take their own life SadSadSad

Zebracat · 21/01/2022 21:35

Thanks for the thread. So sad to think of a young person ending their life.

Seeline · 21/01/2022 21:45

Thanks for the thread 🙂

AnneOfCleavage · 21/01/2022 21:53

Thanks for the new thread @OrangeCinnamonCocktail and for the concise updated list @singingstones - DD doesn't have Bristol as a choice just Bristol UWE so her last choice she's waiting to hear from is Chichester but we won't hear until after her interview next Wednesday. I think I prob short handed Bristol UWE to Bristol one time and so it's my fault.

BlueMarigold · 21/01/2022 21:55

On the UCAS form, when you scroll down there’s a bit where it says you can see who gave you a reference. On DDs it says no reference. I was surprised as I thought the school had done a reference and everything must be ok as she got offers. What do other people see when they click this box?

Alsoplayspiccolo · 21/01/2022 21:55

I’ve heard that about teenage boys too, decorhate.
I taught in a well-known international 6th form boarding school for years (it frequently features in the newspapers, as the DC of foreign royalty go there).
One of the students didn’t make it back to the boarding house in time for curfew one night, and a search party found his body at the bottom of cliffs. Absolutely no sign of previous suicidal thoughts or depression, but there seems to have been a girl involved. Staff were told that teenage boys often act on a sudden whim, as they have underdeveloped impulsivity control.

Oblomov22 · 21/01/2022 22:12

Thank you Orange. And Singing.
So sorry Piggy.

icanbewhatiwant · 21/01/2022 22:26

Thanks for new thread. I need to comment otherwise, even on watch it doesn't come up.

Nard75 · 21/01/2022 22:32

Thanks for the new thread.
