Thread 22 Covid Cohort - Creeping towards the Future - Personal Statements and Interviews

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 27/10/2021 14:04

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

Thanks for the new thread @OrangeCinnamonCocktail and thank you for collating us all @singingstones.

Congratulations to all on offers

I need to listen to that ADHD thing, someone sent me a link, DD suddenly said she thought she might have it a few weeks ago but doesn't want to pursue it ATM. She was diagnosed with dyslexia in year 5 and there are a lot of SpLDs in our family (I suspect DH may have dyslexia/ADHD too). She's got a big decision to make for 6th form, stay at her very small private school for a very supportive, tailored 6th form, or go to a (fairly small but still 10x bigger) college and spread her wings a bit more with travel and social life. I opted for the latter and it was great socially but my results weren't great.

We're off to Chichester tomorrow. Then back to the Roayl Agricultural a week on Sat and that's us done with open days.

crazycrofter · 28/10/2021 11:49

Sorry your dd had to wait so long for the ADHD diagnosis @volterra. It definitely helped ds that he had the hyperactive/compulsive side too, as that’s what is most noticeable (and annoying) to schools. Im currently wondering how on earth he’s going to get a reasonable crop of GCSEs this year Confused.

Oblomov21 · 28/10/2021 11:54

I know you did Crazy, which I why I always mention them, just for your benefit!

cariadambyth · 28/10/2021 12:30

Happy birthday Mini Piccolo 🥳.
Great to hear of more offers coming in.
I’m so sorry to all those who are struggling. Bloomin’ Covid has a lot to answer for.

stoneysongs · 28/10/2021 12:43

Congrats to Oblomov Jr and happy 18th to mini Piccolo! Cake

Sounds like a few of us have the horrific nightmare scenario joy of one DC doing A levels and another doing GCSEs this year GinGinGin

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 28/10/2021 12:51

@Nard75 and @Volterra my DN deferred his maths degree (before covid kicked off) he managed to get agreement from Lancs and Warwick. He has just started Maths at Lancs and is loving it, he worked in a school during his gap year and adored it...you can guess where he is heading career wise !

@Oblomov21 thanks! Grin I’m glad I don’t work for them now though, too much stress combined with a year of GCSEs, A Levels and moving house!

Yes, us. I'm dreading it.

I have a countdown app on my phone Eerily - 244 days until exam contingency day and counting ⏱

Volterra · 28/10/2021 13:54

That’s really interesting OrangeCinnamon, thank you.

Oblomov21 · 28/10/2021 13:59

I was put in my place the other night. Ds1's girlfriend came for dinner and stayed. She announced she too had submitted her application, which we congratulated her, and that she and ds could therefore visit Durham and Nottingham together.

Well said Dh, that's the end of your involvement. No more living vicariously through your firstborn.

Redundant. Needed no more. Weeps silently. Wink

Oblomov21 · 28/10/2021 14:09

Did you know that I clearly have a true vocation, not doing accounts and payroll as I currently do.

I am superb at arranging. Multi tasking. Keeping track of endless versions of PS's and 8 ongoing accountancy apprenticeship applications.

Also girls holidays that I arrange annually, flights, accommodation, booking Michelin star restaurants recently in Ljubljana and Lisbon. All my friends call me Judith Chalmers.

I'm going to set up my own consultancy firm, to offer a free service to everyone. Holiday bookings. And, Year 13 guidance for PS's, Uni applications, arranging finances and uni accommodation.

Now that I've been made redundant by my own son. I like newnames, have ages to wait before Ds2 (13 - yr 8) needs my services. So I'll have to find some other unwilling participants, for the next 4 years.

crazycrofter · 28/10/2021 14:33

Would you like a more difficult candidate to organise @Oblomov21?! I’m just about to print off all the docs ds’ teachers have sent through (to his email, which he never looks at, but I do) with details of the content of his mocks. I will then have to work out a sort of timetable, which will be acceptable to ‘spontaneous’ ds. I’ve also downloaded past papers for all his possible A Level/BTEC subjects. He will be at least a three year project!?

Oblomov21 · 28/10/2021 14:34

Sign me up Grin

@Oblomov21 I raise you

Two DCs with SENs (one with EHCP, DLA/PIP and soon DSA) at separate schools and with multiple hobbies
Two part time jobs
Two admin type volunteer roles
The entirety of our household admin (bills, insurances, pensions, mortgages, cars, holidays).

Unlike you though I always feel as though I'm drowning. It is a cause of friction with DH. He is completely unable to cope with anything other than the simplest admin. Which is one of the reasons I think he has dyslexia or similar. But he won't get assessed so Confused.

icanbewhatiwant · 28/10/2021 16:45

@Oblomov21 I always forget you have a year 8 the same as mine. It'll be great to find a thread like this when their GCSE years are upon us. Seems a long way off yet.

20newnames · 28/10/2021 16:48

Happy Birthday to mini-Piccolo! Well done to @Oblomov21!

Oblomov21 · 28/10/2021 16:59

Just checking in from Cardiff Bay! The new Premier Inn is right next to the Senedd!

Oblomov21 · 28/10/2021 17:03

You've all caught me on a good day. Sometimes I drown Eerily. I stand at the top of the stairs and shout ' do you know what you lot, I've had enough of this bollocks', to which 3 males look at me as if I'm some sort of loon and they know not what language I speak ....

Ooh I will check it out. Dd may have to go to Cardiff for her audition. Don't forget to go to 'Gin and Bake' on the bay too...you don't have to have gin but the cakes are glorious!

We had a weekend there at half term two years ago, had a fabulous time. We didn't stay in the Premier Inn but I remember walking past it and how close it was.
