OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 27/10/2021 14:04

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

That's lovely news, whoamitojudge, well done to your dd! Does she have to go a long way away for her training?

EerilyDisembodied · 30/10/2021 10:20

Fantastic news @whoamitojudge Smile

ealingwestmum · 30/10/2021 10:21

How brilliant to see her focus on achieving a goal come alive whoami. Huge congratulations to your DD! She’ll love the training.

crazycrofter · 30/10/2021 10:26

Well done to your dd @whoamitojudge! That’s amazing news!

EwwSprouts · 30/10/2021 10:27

@whoamitojudge Whoop! So pleased for your DD. Star

Monkey2001 · 30/10/2021 10:46

WhoamI fantastic news! 🍾🍾 Sounds very grown up to be getting a proper job!

Orang I would agree that it is totally reasonable to ask school to get application in sooner rather than later for such a rational reason. I expect health jobs and teaching are in the same position.

@seeline my niece has a great time with Dance Society (Cambridge) and DS1's GF (Sheffield) has joined the Dance Society at Sheffield now that things are happening again (hopeless last year). All sorts of dance very active at universities. My other niece, who had done lots of ballet and gym, took up cheerleading at York, which had been great fun.

Seeline · 30/10/2021 10:50

That's good to hear Monkey. It has been part of her life for so long, is was she does for sport/exercise, and would be a great way of meeting other people, so I'm hoping she will be able to continue dance in some form.

estherfrewen · 30/10/2021 10:56

Fantastic news @whoamitojudge!

stoneysongs · 30/10/2021 10:59

Wow congratulations to your DD @whoamitojudge that is fabulous news!

Zebracat · 30/10/2021 11:14

@whoamitojudge well done to your Dd.

Zebracat · 30/10/2021 11:21

Oops posted too soon. We thought we were all sorted, and now her predicted grade in history has changed from A to B. I have encouraged her to speak to her teachers about it and ask what she needs to do to get them to change it back. She will need the A for her choices, we will have to do a giant rethink otherwise. It seems weird because they predicted an A at Parents Evening 3 weeks ago. I could email them, but I think it’s better if they see motivated student in front of them.

Shimy · 30/10/2021 11:26

Congratulations @whoamitojudge. The beginning of many adventures for her and what a great age to start.

BlueMarigold · 30/10/2021 11:31

Congratulations @whoamitojudge!

Shimy · 30/10/2021 11:32

@Zebracat Isn't it getting a bit late for schools to be changing grades back and forth? by now I'd have thought she'd know exactly what her predicteds are so she can shortlist her universities and send in her application. I'd be quite annoyed with the school if they did this. I agree with you though, that you have to let her speak to them, but it's so annoying.

ealingwestmum · 30/10/2021 11:35

Sorry to hear that Zebracat. This bouncing around of predicted grades is so unfair on young people at this 11th hour. I am grateful for DD’s school being transparent, if not a little tough on those wanting to improve from their Sept first cuts. There was an opportunity to improve upon successful assessments, but not all were successful, with the final grades issued 11 Oct for UCAS.

However, they were clear that whilst those Sept grades could be bettered subject to xyz’s, it would not go down. That helped all as a start point at least.

whoamitojudge · 30/10/2021 11:37

Thank you everyone for your lovely messages. She’s starting her online work now and there’s a lot to get through
@ZittiEBuoni She’s got to go to London and we are in the southeast so not too far

mummabear74 · 30/10/2021 11:56

That's fantastic news @whoamitojudge. @mummyinbeds congratulations!

@ZittiEBuoni good luck with the school counsellor.

We visited Southampton during the week and DD liked the accommodation at Glen Eyre. We were on a campus tour and had the opportunity to view two flats - one ensuite and one shared bathroom - DD like both.

We visited Cardiff Open day last weekend and speaking to the admissions there they said we should put on her UCAS application that she's been referred for ADHD/ASD assessment. We hadn't considered it before as it's only a referral not a diagnosis. Just wondering if anyone else has been in a similar situation and whether we should do this?

EerilyDisembodied · 30/10/2021 12:57

We spoke to the disability team at Chichester yesterday and said we should tick the disability box in UCAS and put forward explanations. It's a bit different for us as DS already has diagnoses but I think its definitely worth sharing if your DC are Ok about it.
@OrangeCinnamonCocktail Thank you for mentioning me in the roll call…..
I have news!!!!!!!!
DD has been accepted onto her training course for RyanAir! She’s literally only just turned 18 too and is so happy as are all of us.
It means she’ll be moving away for 6 weeks which is going to be strange but I know she’ll be ok ( me on the other hand might not be 😂)
That is amazing news 👏👏👏 !

@mummabear74 Dd really likes Glen Eyre too. It has advantage of being nearer to campus for music society events. It is a bit more expensive then the others but we'll see if she gets a place and her accommodation choice before worrying first! She also reckons we can come and meet her for a weekly dog walk Hmm
@OrangeCinnamonCocktail is your DD's college the one on top of the hill? Just wondering as its where I went and had a chat this week about it with one of my fellow former students whose DS is there now. Most of my friends DCs are at the partner one further north.
No sorry we are the coastal town 'that is not very popular / known for big estate' campus college. Lots of the tutors work across all three sites.

EerilyDisembodied · 30/10/2021 15:11

Ah yes, we used to have to go to that one for maths classes for some reason, they weren't formally partnered up back then. Just me being nosy!

Oblomov21 · 30/10/2021 15:57

Whoami this is so cool. Well done dd.

stoneysongs · 30/10/2021 16:16

Well DS has made his picks : Nottingham, Exeter, Sussex, Aston, QMUL. Offer requirements are AAB-BBB so hopefully school will change his predictions from ACC to ABB at least. If not he might replace QMUL with Keele, but the only one he really wants is Nottingham.
PS is ready to go - shame the UCAS form is down this weekend, he'll have to do the inputting on Monday.

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 30/10/2021 16:35

@EerilyDisembodied I like the ethos, there is a lot of self-responsibility required but you can keep an eye on results etc through portals. Dd has some friends up on the downs site and the one further north and all like...10am starts and being able to just be in for lessons and other study at home helps. Chips are rubbish apparently Hmm
