Continuation of OrangeCinnamonCocktail's threads

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

@Alsoplayspiccolo

How are things with your mum, Orange? Flowers
Many thanks @Alsoplayspiccolo it has been an almost miraculous change, considering not two weeks ago.I thought we said goodbye for the last time one night. No more infection markers or oxygen mask needed. A bit more confused then she was before she went in though.
@OrangeCinnamonCocktail it's a much better day for visiting Sussex today. After our extremely wet experience 2 weeks ago. We got on a train from falmer into Brighton. I hadn't been on a train for a few years. Then we got a bus to a relatives house. I have only been on one other bus in about 15 years, that was a bus to the UEA on an open day with ds1.
I did think of our chat about the weather...I've just seen some drizzle over Sussex on the snap maps!
Having easy to navigate public transport does make things a bit more reassuring.

She loves Brighton..it must be a great place to be a student...but I think it has to be the right course too , although that consideration only just tips the balance for her. Sussex have not been great with comms, we tried to get to the bottom of the performance lesson thing and had no response, open day comms came quite late too.

I know ican, but I have to try and let it go, or question why I put DD through 13 months of start stop learning. The car is 23 years old with 36k on the clock, but worth no more that £600. But my head is reconciling this year as another key life skill (which was imperative for me at her age when I taxi’d my mum for a couple of years to and from hospitals). And before cars are total no-no anywhere, as we’re getting there anyway.

BUT, it has huge local cult status already due to its immaculate condition and DD is sentimentally very attached, due to her relationship with her Gran Smile

ealingwestmum · 16/10/2021 11:38

I am really enjoying reading about how DC are getting into what they may want to study and where. It’s amazing how much they mature over 21 (?) threads...

ealingwestmum · 16/10/2021 11:41

Or work! That’s to Mr Accountant (Ob) and Miss Airways (whoamitojudge) to name 2...

Isthisjustnormal · 16/10/2021 11:50

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail:wow, that’s great news - brilliant! Although must be quite hard for you emotionally dealing with the mental shifts of such rapid changes in her health.

EerilyDisembodied · 16/10/2021 12:03

We're at Sussex now, light drizzle only.

We are an hour away along the coast and it is bright and sunny..fingers crossed it comes your way! I was more worried it drizzle would turn into the miserable weather of a couple of weeks back.

It is a bit strange. I feel something akin to guilt (I think) for feeling like she was so close to passing on, the English part of me is almost chastising myself for making a fuss Confused

whoamitojudge · 16/10/2021 14:00

@ealingwestmum Thank you

sofakingcool · 16/10/2021 15:31

Checking in as we drive back from Uni of Sussex open day...

icanbewhatiwant · 16/10/2021 16:20

@ealingwestmum it might be the older car putting the price up. But I'm sure it's just the area. Yes...you have to let it go. Hopefully it'll come down next year.

Glad to hear the weather at Sussex was better today. If it wasn't so far we'd have gone again. But last years lot didn't get open days...so I'm sure it'll be fine.

sofakingcool · 16/10/2021 16:27

What did you think of Sussex @EerilyDisembodied ?
OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 16/10/2021 16:37

Initial thoughts @sofakingcool @eerilydisembodied?

Dd liked the course and tour...you do get lessons for Music Performance modules. Not sure why that can't be clear on website Hmm.

She likes the area very much, I'm worried it is a bit remote in terms of shops etc. It is a strong contender for insurance. She is determined Southampton is tops. She has a tour at Surrey on Wednesday so we will see..they guarantee accommodation for insurance holders too. I've an inkling Dd will love the course too and like the campus, but Guildford as an area won't compare to Brighton so a tough decision will need to be made.

She really wants to be sure that she is happy with her insurance as doesn't want clearing stress. Of course, it won't help if something goes spectacularly wrong but we can mitigate as much as poss.

icanbewhatiwant · 16/10/2021 16:52

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail ds1 is at UEA which is out of the city. He found food shopping difficult. It was either pay the university shop prices, online or a long walk. I thought I'd make sure Ds2 chose a uni near the city. But I think Sussex is the same as UEA in terms of food shop. There is a co op on site. But it will be more expensive.

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 16/10/2021 17:18

I recall reading somewhere that it was the most expensive Coop in the country @icanbewhatiwant

Alsoplayspiccolo · 16/10/2021 17:26

So glad and relieved that things have improved with your mum, Orange.

Regarding Surrey uni, in its favour I’d definitely say was proximity to London for a music student. Just imagine how many concerts your DD could get to in less than an hour! And Guildford itself has a thriving musical life of its own.

icanbewhatiwant · 16/10/2021 17:57

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail that wouldn't surprise me. We nipped in there to buy something for lunch. But it was too cold and wet to think about cost. They did say Sussex was the next most expensive accommodation after London.

DH's dd went to Sussex. She was telling Ds that her car was essential. That is something I didn't want her telling him.

Thanks @Alsoplayspiccolo I have just reminded her of that...and the fact that she'll have her free train travel on that line as her Dad drives it.

We'll see what happens after her subject tour next week.

What did you think of Sussex @EerilyDisembodied ?

It's off the list after today. The course sounded excellent and a very good fit for DS however in every other respect it is wrong for him. As for the disruption, I was fully expecting it and am well acquainted with events leading to it so I'm not sorry its off the list TBH.

Was it evident today?
EerilyDisembodied · 16/10/2021 19:26

Very much so @ProggyMat. Not in the morning bar the odd sticker, but from around midday the central square was taken over by protestors, with loud chanting, banners, flags, leafletting. Security were on hand and it didn't look like boiling over but it was quite an intimidating atmosphere.

ProggyMat · 16/10/2021 19:38

@EerilyDisembodied not surprised it’s off the list when one voice can be freely expressed yet another is muted…

EerilyDisembodied · 16/10/2021 19:44

There's a thread in Feminism.

Other than that, it's just too big for DH, too big a city, too far from home, he is autistic and the atmosphere today really rattled him.

EerilyDisembodied · 16/10/2021 19:45

I'm neurotypical, fairly confident and well acquainted with the subject and it rattled me too.
