Thread 21 Corona Cohort - Nervous waiting, so frustrating

Monkey2001 · 09/10/2021 12:21

Continuation of OrangeCinnamonCocktail's threads

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

The Sussex team on UC last week were certainly very Sussex!

icanbewhatiwant · 16/10/2021 20:42

I just had a quick look online. The lady they want fired from Sussex is the one who's talk we listened to.

EerilyDisembodied · 16/10/2021 20:50

She needs police protection to come onto the campus now @icanbewhatiwant.

icanbewhatiwant · 16/10/2021 20:51

@EerilyDisembodied she obviously wasn't giving the philosophy talk today then.

EerilyDisembodied · 16/10/2021 20:54

Well, we didn't go to it but she certainly wasn't at the philosophy stand when we passed by, I did look.

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 16/10/2021 21:03

Funny Dd didn't mention it at all. She tends to avoid obvious crowds though. She did mention a sports team that seemed 'cult like'.
We've had a couple of chats about the debate.

We both agree at least on the point that the issues stem from men (those born as) use of violence against women and that needs to be tackled by society in a much more effective way.

Brighton has always been a bit edgy for me. I struggle with the Brighton and Sussex hospitals decision to talk about "Chest milk". So stupid as breast is actually a gender neutral word anyway! Men have been clutching people to their breasts and wearing double breasted suits for year. As for the Robin Red Chest......

I love that FB page!
icanbewhatiwant · 16/10/2021 21:37

@Monkey2001 I'm a bit old fashioned with things like that, all the gender neutral stuff. Ds2 in particular, is always telling me off. DH is even worse as he's much older than me. I don't disagree with it...but some of it is just a bit silly. So Brighton wouldn't suit me, but I'm sure Ds would be fine. I wish Ds would take a look somewhere else though. But he won't. Brighton is so very different to our quiet part of Suffolk. I'm sure other cities will be different for him too.

EerilyDisembodied · 16/10/2021 21:44

I feel a bit the same about Brighton but I haven't been for years and the course really does sound good, plus DS is just about there on the grade requirements with a contextual offer. Also I wanted him to see a bigger university, all the others we've visited have been small ones. Oh well.

crazycrofter · 16/10/2021 21:58

I don’t think I’ve ever been to Brighton! Glad everyone had successful days today anyway- I class striking somewhere off tte list as success too, as at least it’s a decision!

Is anybody taking much notice of the student satisfaction scores on unistats? I know they will have gone down across the board because of Covid, but I was comparing some of dd’s options for mental health nursing and they varied massively. Over 90% for Leicester and Southampton, less than 50% for Leeds, with the others on the 60-70% range. Just wondering whether it’s significant

crazycrofter · 16/10/2021 22:00

Actually no, it was York that got over 90% not Southampton

What’s the point of having a gender neutral term for something men can’t do?
Monkey2001 · 16/10/2021 23:31

@BlueMarigold trans-men can breastfeed (or chestfeed in Brighton). It is all so complicated these days!

OP posts:
Oblomov21 · 17/10/2021 05:13

"Chestfeeding can also refer to using a feeding tube attached to the nipple to feed their baby if lactation isn’t possible."

I find this difficult to accept.

I see… That is not something I’d thought of. Thanks @Monkey2001 and @Oblomov21!

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/10/2021 08:34

@ealingwestmum

Phew. Passed Smile

Thank you everyone for your kind words. I really hope those waiting for tests/re-test dates manage to get somewhere soon.

Congratulations to your DD @ealingwestmum that’s fab news! 🎉
JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/10/2021 08:41

@EerilyDisembodied

Very much so *@ProggyMat*. Not in the morning bar the odd sticker, but from around midday the central square was taken over by protestors, with loud chanting, banners, flags, leafletting. Security were on hand and it didn't look like boiling over but it was quite an intimidating atmosphere.
DS has taken Sussex off his list after watching what’s been going on.
Oblomov21 · 17/10/2021 09:35

My older (middle) brother lives in Brighton. He went to Sussex Uni donkeys years ago and just stayed. I love popping down to see him once or twice a year. He always takes me to somewhere that has the best food, like ever! Very foodie Brighton.

I totally understand why dc might be put off. But I also fear such shenanigans and protests etc, we are going to see more of, all over the place, in other cities too soon, unfortunately.

Heifer · 17/10/2021 09:39

Nothing uni related but I am pleased to report that DD went clubbing for the first time last night in Liverpool (with 10 friends) as it was someones 18th (now 4 of the group are 18, the rest not), and I am pleased to report not only did she survive unscathed (home by 2.30am, got a taxi with a male hockey friend she saw there (instead of staying even later with her friends and staying over at theirs), and the best part is that she didn't enjoy it and doesn't want to go again. result. After not enjoying 2 festivals, 2 nightclubs she now agrees that it isn't for her and perhaps she is a pub/mates house/party kind of girl after all and that she doesn't need to worry about lack of night clubs at any of the unis she may want to go to as there will be plenty of other stuff to do....

Monkey2001 · 17/10/2021 09:42

Has anybody's DC passed a driving test without official lessons, doing it on a family car? I have not managed to find a driving instructor to "top and tail" the teaching DS has had from us and a friend. I think we need DS1 to make a list of the things his instructor told him more than once.

Heifer · 17/10/2021 09:43

I've never been to Brighton - even when I lived down South. I feel it's somewhere I should visit one day. Also never been to the Lakedistrict and we now live pretty close by - I have some serious weekending to do sometime in the near future :-)

Great news on passing driving tests - and @OrangeCinnamonCocktail great news about your mum - it must be a very emotional rollercoaster.

@Piggywaspushed how are you feeling now? ready for half term I bet.

It's Half term for DD as she gets 2 weeks off,I think lots of lie ins, PS and revision is on the cards.

Piggywaspushed · 17/10/2021 09:46

I feel more or less OK heifer Awaiting results of various blood tests.. definitely need half term!

Am excited to be going to the theatre today , after all the many disappointments of the summer! Going with DS for some Tudors revision at The Mirror and the Light and have had an email upgrading my tickets!

Last week Dd mentioned to me she was 'afraid' to go to nightclubs because of this new trend of injecting people to spike them. I couldn't quite believe this. There is a message about this on WIWIKAU FB page this morning about it happening to a young girl. WTAF?! People are so sick.
