Thread 21 Corona Cohort - Nervous waiting, so frustrating

Monkey2001 · 09/10/2021 12:21

Continuation of OrangeCinnamonCocktail's threads

This is a thread for supporting all young people post GCSEs 2020, regardless of their educational setting. It is respectfully requested that all are supportive and helpful to each other. If you want to start a debate, e.g state vs private, please don't within this thread. Please also be sensitive when responding to threads about grades.

Some of us have been here since first thread back in yr10, some will be new. Everyone has been friendly and helpful in the past. Everyone is welcome. It is hoped this will continue.

Our DS/DD may go down various paths (such as employment, apprenticeships, higher ed) We have decided for anyone interested they will most likely find us within the Further Ed board.

And great to hear about the assessment success whoamitojudge and EPQ result isthisjustnormal

estherfrewen · 15/10/2021 14:51

@ealingwestmum - great news! Can your DD drive herself to early swims now?!

ealingwestmum · 15/10/2021 14:57

Hehe, I hope soEsther, weekends at least. Just got the small matters of ULEZ to set up (live very soon) and insurance now before she can actually drive...our quote’s just gone from £800 to £2,200 😱

Wheresthebeach · 15/10/2021 14:59

Congrats WestEaling but yikes over the insurance!

Monkey2001 · 15/10/2021 15:06

Congratulations @ealingwestmum DD! I had to get a different policy when DS1 passed - I ended up taking him off the existing policy and just getting a second policy on the same car with him as a newly qualified driver. That is legal, although they don't really like it. Head to Comparethemarket etc, varies by £'000s. And don't forget that putting extra adults on can bring the premium down even if they never end up driving. Insurance quotes are a dark art!

Monkey2001 · 15/10/2021 15:07

@ealingwestmum try Directline too - they gave me best quote for newly qualified DS1, was about £500.

Well done whoami. My friend just posted this BA advert.
Congrats Ealing dd 🚗. Ouch on the insurance. Ds1's is £150 per month! Shock

ealingwestmum · 15/10/2021 15:16

Thanks so much Monkey, we will try again. I thought I’d tee’d it all up so no idea why quotes aren’t being honoured now. It’s her car in her name (my mum’s originally), and we were transferring ownership back to one of the ‘grownups’ to circumvent the £ escalation post passing as the best cost option. Will try again now, didn’t want to get ahead of myself, and will put us all on to see if the computer still says no...

icanbewhatiwant · 15/10/2021 15:18

@ealingwestmum try marmalade too.

Alsoplayspiccolo · 15/10/2021 16:04

Congratulations to your DD, ealingwest - she must be very relieved and happy with herself.

Nard75 · 15/10/2021 17:13

Congratulations to everyone on driving test passes, EPQ and interview successes. Good to hear that our DC are doing so well with everything have been through.

crazycrofter · 15/10/2021 17:47

Well done to your dd @ealingwestmum, how exciting for her!

EwwSprouts · 15/10/2021 19:33

Lovely to end the week with so many bits of good news.

I think the airline interviews and the prospect of such a responsible job seems a more adult step than continuing in education (even if moving away). Not better or worse!

ProggyMat · 15/10/2021 20:02

@ealingwestmum well done to your DD!

Monkey2001 · 15/10/2021 20:12

@whoamitojudge we have been watching videos for tips on on-line interviews. Obviously your DD knows she probably has to look glamourous, but it may be worth doing some practice interviews on zoom with you on another room, making sure she is looking at the camera, maybe recording it so she can see if is doing things she is not aware of.

May be worth all sharing on line interview tips here.

OP posts:
whoamitojudge · 15/10/2021 20:59

@Monkey2001 That’s a good idea re zoom interview techniques. I might mention that to her.
There’s quite a few stages to go through, first you apply, then there’s an online assessment similar, I guess to the 11plus. (DD said the EasyJet one was hard and was really surprised she’d passed) Then interviews which are done online and if you pass those then the training begins!
She saw the BA advert for cabin crew and although that’s the airline she wants to work for eventually she wants to be able to have a few years experience with another airline as she thinks it will look better having actual crew experience.
Thank you all for your kind and lovely comments and I appreciate you all letting me join in even though she isn’t going to uni.
A huge good luck to all of your DC’s for their futures

Oblomov21 · 15/10/2021 21:53

Was on another thread about booking holidays. Need to talk about that to Dh. Op dd didn't want to go to prom.

Just asked Ds1 and he can't wait, and wants a white James Bond Tuxedo!

Hattifatteners · 15/10/2021 22:22

Congratulations to @ealingwestmum DD! Getting the driving licence gives them a great freedom.
@wheresthebeach, DS applied with deferred entry two years ago. He got three offers for 2021entry. The unis were Nottingham, Leicester and UEA and the subject was Medicine. He never mentioned in his PS why he wanted a gap year.

ealingwestmum · 15/10/2021 23:41

Thank you again everyone. Well, we couldn’t get the insurance under £1650, so telematics box on its way, and we’ll suck up the very expensive year. I did ask why so, what if car was 10 year old mini, or I owned it, family on cover and so on. It isn’t any of those factors, it’s where we are in London driving cost; accidents over the average for 17 to 19 yr olds etc.

Don’t even want to work out the ave cost per journey, given she may use it once/twice a week max, but writing it down helps get it out my system, and I can breathe and move on! Direct Line was the highest at £2,900 😱

Monkey2001 · 16/10/2021 00:36

Wow Ealing, I hope she appreciates how lucky she is! It may have helped us that DS1 was 20 when he passed, but I thought boys were more risky than girls. I looked it up and we were charged £343 for a year with him as a named driver on our Skoda Octavia. Insurance is so odd! There is a weird thing that a year after they pass their test insurance gets cheaper even if they haven't driven.

Congratulations to Dd @ealingwestmum beep beep. Commiserations to you on the insurance cost.

OrangeCinnamonCocktail · 16/10/2021 07:47

I've booked ours @oblomov21 the week after dd turns 18 in July, after watching Mamma Mia 2 she wanted to go Greek Island hopping on her own for some reason, the compromise is that we go to Corfu and take a boat trip to Paxos / Anti-Paxos.

She is insisting on going by herself to Sussex today. There is direct train to Brighton from here and it extremely easy once from Falmer. I'm safe in the knowledge that she likes Brighton the place. Last open day she went on her own was RHU and she was not impressed with Egham.
Surrey department tour is next week and she will go to that on her own too. I guess this is the advantage of choosing places relatively nearby.

We will see what she says bet I won't get a word out

Alsoplayspiccolo · 16/10/2021 09:39

How are things with your mum, Orange? Flowers

icanbewhatiwant · 16/10/2021 10:00

Wow @ealingwestmum that insurance is high. Ds1 is on his third year of insurance and it was only £400 (1.2 fiesta a few years old) he lives in Norwich. Ds2 is due for renewal, he passed 3 months ago (he had learner insurance that covered when he passed too...due to covid he was a learner longer than intended) our quote for renewal is £600 but not shopped around yet (1.2 Corsa 8 years old) Where we live must make a difference. I need to shop around to see if I can get a lower quote.

icanbewhatiwant · 16/10/2021 10:17

@OrangeCinnamonCocktail it's a much better day for visiting Sussex today. After our extremely wet experience 2 weeks ago. We got on a train from falmer into Brighton. I hadn't been on a train for a few years. Then we got a bus to a relatives house. I have only been on one other bus in about 15 years, that was a bus to the UEA on an open day with ds1.
