We went to the local mass centre and they said they could not do it for DS2, partly because people have to be booked in and even if they could, they only had Moderna, which is not approved for 17 year olds. They advised us to go to the grabajab website and locate a walk in centre doing Pfizer and see whether they will do it, so I have just dropped him at Primark, where they are doing a walk in clinic today. If that does not work, 119 advised us to contact our GP who can change his Covid status to eligible so that we can book. 🤞🤞 for Primark.....

Monkey2001 · 17/07/2021 17:26

It was a no at Primark, so need to contact GP.

Zandathepanda · 17/07/2021 17:40

What about a local hospital? We had ours done there and they asked if anymore family members were with us (whereupon I was running round the one way system trying to get a phone signal to get Dh in from the car)!
If your GP has a secretary I would ask to speak to them - they are sometimes easier to get hold of.

Fferny1 · 17/07/2021 17:41

DD has a friend who is stuck in London this year and can't get home. But she's managed to get a vaccine at 17. She told them she had to travel soon. She has her second appointment in early August ?!
So DD will go with her n see what happens. We have flights to Mallorca in September but I'm not hopeful of going.

I'm totally despondent about this shit government.Very high cases forecast by September - just in time for the school return....

Leeds and Reading festivals just before school starts Sad

EverythingDelegated · 17/07/2021 18:04

Just looked up the Boots flu jabs, can't book online for under 16s, have to phone the store.

Zandathepanda · 17/07/2021 18:40

Oh sorry Everything when talking about flu jabs I thought you were meaning over 16. The younger years are getting the flu jab at school aren’t they anyway?

Fferny1 · 17/07/2021 19:17

Some schools don't do jabs. I had to take ds1 to a chemist for his flu jab.
From memory it's a different vaccine for the under 16's and it's only done at certain Boots centres.

ealingwestmum · 17/07/2021 19:25

Under 16 flu ‘jabs’ will be via nasal sprays

EverythingDelegated · 17/07/2021 19:26

It's the nasal vaccine for under 16s. I didn't think about them getting it at school, that would make a lot of sense. Might be easier for the other three of us to go to Boots together instead of all separate appointments, I hadn't realised they did NHS.

Fferny1 · 17/07/2021 19:38

Mine had the injection.
I think there are two types - nasal & injectable.
The nasal vaccine is always used in junior schools.

I’m not so sure these festivals will actually go ahead @Zandathepanda DDs friend - soon to be off, hopefully, to Uni in the Autumn asked in spring if DD wanted to go this summer DD dithered and then there were no tickets left Now there are loads of tickets available….
Monkey2001 · 17/07/2021 19:59

I am feeling quite glad that my DSs' festivals have been cancelled, as I am sure they would come back though covid.

EverythingDelegated · 17/07/2021 21:02

The BBc article yesterday said under 16s would have the nasal spray, we'll have to wait and see www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-57867955

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/07/2021 21:07

@Monkey2001 can you book through GP for the jab? Especially as they will know about your DH’s history. I tried our two day pop up centre in the town centre today for DS but they were adamant no under 18s. I might try another site tomorrow that’s about half an hour away, there’s a few appearing in towns around me.

I am also worried about Reading, I’ve got a feeling they’ll say only vaccinated people can go or just cancel completely. I’m so angry about all these big events that have been allowed to go ahead before the teenagers have been allowed to get jabs and before our ‘freedom day’ Hmm. After all the crap they’ve dealt with at school, now that they have finished for the summer they won’t be allowed to do anything as they are at such high risk. I’m so tired of it all, I can’t imagine how fed up the teens must be.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 17/07/2021 21:11

On a different matter, the information on what points people got is quite odd on the course DS is interested in - maybe I’m looking at the wrong thing. How does someone get 240 UCAS points??

Fferny1 · 17/07/2021 21:15

@EverythingDelegated mine go to an independent school where they also do their own pcr testing. It's sounds as though they've made a different decision over vaxing. D's goes to another school where they don't routinely do flu vaccinations.

crazycrofter · 17/07/2021 21:17

@Oblomov21 I think I might have mentioned the PwC scheme:
www.pwc.co.uk/careers/student-careers/school-careers/our-programmes/flying-start-degrees.html

crazycrofter · 17/07/2021 21:18

This is different from higher apprenticeships which they also do in tax and audit.

EverythingDelegated · 17/07/2021 21:19

Mine are at independent schools too, I think they might flu jab the boarders at DS's school but he's a day student. Never heard of it at DD's school but its day only. No PCRs for either of them either.

Oblomov21 · 17/07/2021 21:32

Many thanks Crazy.
Ds1 and I are sat here now. Doing his applications for : KPMG, EY, & PWC.
All have work experience for Year 12's.

I guess you'd need 4 good A levels, so 3 x A star, 1 x A and a grade 8 distinction is 246 I think?
icanbewhatiwant · 17/07/2021 22:08

Ds3 has had the nasal flu vaccine at school from early primary age. They seem to extend it a year as he goes up a year. To start it was just up to year 2. He was in year 2. Then they added year 3 as he went up etc. Last year was the first time they did year 7's. He was in year 7. DH is eligible for a flu vaccine, ds3 has always been given his at school before dh gets his.

Shimy · 17/07/2021 22:13

@JustHereWithMyPopcorn I’m trying to do a comparison between 2 Unis. Those tariff points aren’t just based on 3 A’Levels, they include all sorts of qualifications that award U AS points.
I’ve copied and pasted the old and new A’level tariffs just in case.

A level Old Tariff New Tariff
AAA* 420 168
AAA 400 160
A*AA 380 152
AAA 360 144
AAB 340 136
ABB 320 128
BBB 300 120
BBC 280 112
BCC 260 104
CCC 240 96
CCD 220 88
CDD 200 80
DDD 180 72

If you add quals such as EPQ (A=56) which few schools do, that will raise the tariff. Music qualifications. Under the Unis that I’m looking at very few have beyond 240 UCAS points though. The majority fall within the128-143 & 144-159 bracket which is equivalent to ABB-AAA and AAA-AAA.

icanbewhatiwant · 17/07/2021 22:15

@Zandathepanda thanks for that about boots. Just booked my flu vaccine for sept. I didn't book one for Ds1 or Ds2 though. Dh and ds3 will have one anyway.
