Agree Shimy.

My own DD is volunteering at a food bank warehouse. All good to do.

The problem with pushing work experience is that there simply aren’t enough opportunities for all the children who need them. It’s a capacity problem, not an allocation problem.

Piggywaspushed · 21/07/2021 14:28

Quite a lot of museums etc reopening at the moment and looking for volunteers. Foodbanks (at least round us) aren't because of covid stuff.

Oblomov21 · 21/07/2021 14:29

Ds just passed his driving test.
I am so pleased.

stoneysongs · 21/07/2021 14:31

Well done to him, @Oblomov21
It must be wine o'clock now!

FoolsAssassin · 21/07/2021 14:32

Great news Oblomov !!

whoamitojudge · 21/07/2021 14:38

Hi everyone and thanks for the new thread.
I've loved reading your messages and it is so interesting to hear about the A level/uni route as my DD isn't following that path.
She's got to wait for her results but is predicted DD grade ( double distinction) for BTEC travel and tourism and has passed her introduction to airline cabin crew course.
She has a part time job in hospitality which is something that the airlines look for when ( or if!) they recruit
It has been near impossible to book a theory test for her but she is practicing on the app which is helping. ( I had a go on it the other day and failed!!! Been driving for 20+ years!!)
Good luck to everyone for results, driving etc and hope you all have a wonderful and safe summer

estherfrewen · 21/07/2021 14:44

Great news @Oblomov21!

Shimy · 21/07/2021 14:50

Marvellous news Oblomov and what a lovely day to pass as well.

ealingwestmum · 21/07/2021 14:52

Fabulous news Oblomov!

Shimy · 21/07/2021 15:05

@Empress DS did some volunteering at a food bank warehouse and it was really interesting. I had to go with him because he was underage and learnt how they put 'packages' together for different clients, how they stored the donations and sorted them etc. I enjoyed it.

Fiddlersgreen · 21/07/2021 15:06

Great news @Oblomov21 you definitely need that wine to celebrate now!

@whoamitojudge that’s great your DD has found a job that will be useful for when she can apply for cabin crew.

My DS has his theory next month but he hasn’t even started lessons, we’ve not been able to find anyone in our area taking on new students yet!

Monkey2001 · 21/07/2021 15:10

Hurray @Oblomov21 🎉🚘🍾, it was about time for some good news. This thread seems to be a good luck place for driving tests!

icanbewhatiwant · 21/07/2021 15:11

@Oblomov21 great news. Not long until ds2's test. Not sure he's ready. He's not had driving lessons for a month or so due to a change in timetable at school and now he's working 3 days a week. All lessons had to be moved. There were limited spaces. 6 more before his test though. I feel he's had so many altogether.

whoamitojudge · 21/07/2021 15:23

@Fiddlersgreen She was very lucky. It’s been interesting as she’s gone from being one of the oldest at school to joining the workplace and being the youngest one there. She’s enjoying it though and has done well in tips so far

20newnames · 21/07/2021 16:30

@Oblomov21 - Brilliant news, well done to your DS! Pass rate is 45% so the DC on this thread have done very well so far!

ChristopherTracy · 21/07/2021 16:31

wow well done @Oblomov21 DS!

EverythingDelegated · 21/07/2021 16:32

Well done to DS @Oblomov21 and well done to your DD on the cabin crew course @whoamitojudge, it's good to hear from people who aren't going the uni route, mine is still not completely decided.

We don't do work experience at my workplace either, occasionally someone's child, niece etc will come in and shadow for a day but nothing more. DH's company takes the odd one for a couple of days but again, only really shadowing. DS is volunteering in a local museum and covering some extra paper rounds this summer, DD is doing pet sitting for family friends and might do the odd paper round too, they always need cover at this time of year.

Orangecinnamon21 · 21/07/2021 16:59

Great news @Oblomov21! Beep beep! Wine

Today was the afternoon we went and saw the Greyhounds to rehome. We have to go back as couldn't walk but have narrowed down to three that we think will suit our family.

One small and shy boy about two, apparently quite playful once he gets used to you...likes toys. Never raced.

One tiny girl, never raced, young and bouncy/jumpy more pup like..adored my husband.

One normal sized girl affectionate and confident...I know my daughter would love

2 x black, 1 x black and white...it is so difficult to choose..we are going back after our hold to hopefully walk with Dd and MIL

Holiday not hold!

Piggywaspushed · 21/07/2021 17:27

Now you see when I went to get my 'kitten' , I came back with two....

Alsoplayspiccolo · 21/07/2021 17:40

Well done, mini Oblomov!
whoamitojudgrme, your DD sounds like she’s well on the way to her dream career! It’s lovely to read about DCs who are going down a non-uni path through choice, especially when they are following their passion.
DD really doesn’t know what she wants to do in life (or uni!), whereas I knew from the start of secondary school.

ealingwestmum · 21/07/2021 17:41

Good for her whoamitojidge, tip money can be so lucrative, financially and for developing those customer facing skills she’ll need later in her role.

Orange, how exciting, though nerve racking as well? I’m sure any of the 3 would be perfect, but good luck with the final decision. My husband was such a dog hater. Until 4 years ago, when DD was bumped to 2nd, if there was ever a fire. She says 3rd, coffee machine comes 2nd. I promise we aren’t as dark as this reads in RL!

stoneysongs · 21/07/2021 17:51

Ha yes DH reckons my order of importance would be

1: dog
2: DC
3: slightly nicer cat
4: less nice cat
5: DH

ealingwestmum · 21/07/2021 18:00

My DH would be doing very well at 5th Singingtones Grin
