It is difficult, because not everyone wants to hire someone who'll only be there for 4-5 months. I agree that seasonal summer work might be the area to look in.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/05/2019 12:16

She definitely can't lie, partly because that's not the right thing to do and partly for any references.

Public transport. Bane of my life!

DD had her phone stolen at a beer festival in Bispham (who even knew there was such a thing?!?) on Sunday. But hurrah we can claim on our contents insurance which we extended to cover her at University.

One small glimmer of light in the darkness ....

All our photos from our African safari were on her phone. Had she transferred them to her Apple Mac? No she had not. So the Bataleur swooping down to pick up some road kill from in front of our car will have to remain forever in my memory.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 07/05/2019 15:16

what a bummer :(

UrsulaP I am SO sorry about your photos! I would be beside myself! Am unlurking here to ask if anyone can offer guidance. DD works in the holidays as event staff, to make enough money to keep herself going through term. She chooses shifts that can dovetail into each other and fit together. Over the two week break at Easter she made about £350. She has now been called for jury service, starting on the first day of summer term. I know there is a loss of earnings payment possible but it seems that casual staff are not included. Does anyone have any experience? She has cancelled her holiday plans to do the service, but is worried about how she will make enough money to pay the first rental (July) on her second year flat. Is there any chance she could qualify for the loss of earnings? I am clueless....

UrsulaPandress · 08/05/2019 14:42

Ooh. No idea. I’ve done jury service once but I worked for a big company that let you have the time off.

I imagine there should be some payment but I doubt it’s much. Does she really want y do it? What if it’s a huge case that goes on for weeks?

TapasForTwo · 08/05/2019 14:44

If it's a zero hours contract I doubt that she would be able to claim anything.

Sorry to hear about your daughter's phone Ursula. At least you have wonderful memories. No-one can take those away from you.

starfleet · 08/05/2019 14:54

I was called up for jury service the summer I was going to start at university. If you had a valid reason you could decline (not sure if that still applies) but they could call you up again at any time. I was - about 20 years later. I was working and my employers let me have the time off.

Ursula - that's a bit shit. Did she have the photo syncing thing activated on her phone? I'm sure if it was then the photos automatically get uploaded to the cloud. I'm not hugely technical but I'm sure this is what happened when my phone was stolen at xmas. My photos all seemed to be there when I logged into my icloud.

starfleet · 08/05/2019 15:09

Sorry... pressed too soon.

Also, if she backed her phone up and gets the same/similar as a replacement (I'm just assuming it's an iphone BTW) she can back up restore to the new handset and everything should be there.

UrsulaPandress · 08/05/2019 15:19

Her cloud was full - with all the shit she has on her phone. If they can be recovered that would be brilliant but I'm not holding out much hope. She did say they would automatically sync to her Apple Mac when we got back on WiFi at my brother's house but it seems that didn't happen.

Hey ho. One elephant looks much like another after a while and I have safari photos going back years.

But there were some great moments that had been captured on video. On our last safari day it was raining and a teeny baby elephant was none too happy about it and kept trying to hide under mum and she kept getting a front leg stuck over the top of the baby.

I did ask her to send me the video of an elephant throwing a hissy fit at two hippos in a large water hole so at least I've got that one.

DD has been busy choosing her modules for next year.

I find it rather odd that some of the modules are 85% coursework and 15% presentation whilst others might be 60% exam and 40% coursework. As she is doing a History degree it seems odd that any marks at all are given for a 'presentation'. DD hates public speaking and gets really nervous and scored low marks on presentations this year whilst doing well on coursework and timed essays. It seems sad that it could mean the difference between a first and a 2:1. I could understand in teaching or law or something where standing up in front of people was important. It smacks a bit of the homeworks - make a poster of .....

OhYouBadBadKitten · 08/05/2019 20:59

I guess it allows for those who will have front facing roles to develop their skills, but I do sympathise with hating public speaking.

Ursula interesting you say that about History and presentations. Ds2 (l doing A levels) lurves presentations, and it drives me insane. He spent most of the weekend filming himself as Henry VIII or as a presenter leaning from pretend Tudor windows (we live in a mock tudor house ironically)reporting on Tudor goings on.. And there was me saying to him, this is not A level work..you need to READ. And he wants to do History at university Hmm

Earwax has been resolved. Apparently it was an Eustachian Tube Dysfunction not earwax. I think I am going to say that next time someone annoys me with their loud teenage opinions. I have ETD and cannot hear you.

Janin I am always in dread of Jury Service. Surely if it is a long case they have to make allowance for casual workers not earning anything??

Shanghai that sounds quite tough for you. He must be a very resilient together young man. Ds1 certainly hasn't got to that stage, he cannot even make a doctor's appointment for himself!!

Nettleskeins · 08/05/2019 23:07

btw, that was ds1 who had the earwax crisis not me

UrsulaPandress · 08/05/2019 23:18

Exactly Nettle. All that faffing is very year7.

janinlondon · 09/05/2019 12:35

No she is not keen to do the jury service - she says she is far too young (hahaha). But there is no way to be excused just because you are a university student or a casual contract worker. You can defer but only once - so when they call you again you have to do it even if its in the middle of exams. They have tightened up enormously - even the professions that used to be excused are no longer able to pull that one. And loss of earnings for self employed people is not considered an excuse either. Sigh......she is just unlucky I guess!

TheFirstOHN · 11/05/2019 21:55

Ursula DS1 really struggles with the presentations for History and his anxiety goes back to square one. Just before the last one started he threw up and then fainted. The university allowed him to submit the slides and script instead, but asked for the entire presentation (not just his quarter of the 4-person group presentation) so he had 24 hours to write the other 3/4 of it.

He now looks very carefully at the assessment methods for each module before choosing.

TheFirstOHN · 11/05/2019 21:59

He has now submitted all assignments for the first year. Only one exam to do, which is only a small % of the weighting for the total marks for the year.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 11/05/2019 22:01

Your poor lad with fainting First, thank goodness there is a way round it!

Definitelyrandom · 11/05/2019 23:31

Both mine have carefully chosen their options to play to their strengths- so DS1 selected modules with more course work than exams where possible. DS2 has found in his first year that presentations have been quite important- but luckily he is fairly confident and did quite a lot of debating and so on at school.

Nettleskeins · 12/05/2019 00:06

It is very interesting to hear other students' strengths and weaknesses. Ds1 HAS to perform, as it is part of his course, so standing up and embarassing himself in front of others is very familiar to him. Yet he is exceedingly shy in other ways, and could not for instance, find himself a job like your lad, First let alone a girlfriend. And he cannot debate for toffee. Ds2 can perform, and present and debate, and found himself a coffee shop job in school, only to decide the pay was too bad...Hmm

Had two lovely walks with the dog today, but all that fresh air and cowparsley is leaving me so tired that very little else is getting done.

TheFirstOHN · 12/05/2019 00:16

The job is going well (he is doing about 20 hours a week) but sadly no more famous people. The girlfriend is still lovely (her A-levels start next week so they've been studying together at our dining room table).

UrsulaPandress · 12/05/2019 07:28

Your poor DS First. DD isn't that bad. And to be fair she needs to man up.

She has worked in two shops and models for one of them and will argue black is white when it suits her.

She still chooses modules based on what interests her.

UrsulaPandress · 12/05/2019 07:30

It's the May blossom that is making me feel faint with its heady bloom.

captainoftheshipwreck · 12/05/2019 10:16

Ursula - I hadn't thought of that. I was putting the feeling of faintness down to DS finally doing some revision Grin
