I knew a mature student doing dance when I was a student umpty million years ago.

OP posts:
UrsulaPandress · 27/08/2019 19:17

Would that be for teaching though? And probably no costs involved?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/08/2019 19:49

It was in the early days of student loans for living costs. I don't know what she did with it.

A close friend's DD dropped out of a Law degree a few years ago and switched to a Dance degree. She was unhappy so mum supported. She is now happy as a dancer, personal trainer, fitness instructor and yoga teacher. Earns enough to be self sufficient and travel a lot, sometimes running retreats.
I wouldn't want DD to do dance at uni, she does in society!!! But I have been happily employed with an English and Drama degree for many years. Not probs best degree for financial gain!
Agree with you really Ursula, just saying world is full of variations in education.

UrsulaPandress · 27/08/2019 20:29

My mum did dance alongside Biology when she did her teaching certificate as a mature student. Nothing against dance. I just think if you want to and can dance then I don’t see the benefit of a degree in the subject when you could be earning money whilst doing something you enjoy.

Knotaknitter · 28/08/2019 07:47

It's the same arguement as sport, it's potentially a short career, even shorter with the risk of injury and you need to think early on about what you'll do at the end of it. If you want to coach/train/teach then you need the entry qualifications for that as well as having the achievements/CV.

Alternatively, all her friends will be having the uni experience and that's what sh'e looking for.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/08/2019 07:54

Perhaps it's about talent? If they are moderately good rather than exceptional, perhaps they don't earn enough to support themselves by just dancing?

It is interesting though isn't it, lots of careers used to be learned on the job and aren't anymore.

Bring back National Service I say.

And Technical Colleges.

I’ll get my coat.

Knotaknitter · 28/08/2019 14:17

T levels? Not the same as learning on the job but a recognition that A levels (and then uni) isn't the one and only career path.

TapasForTwo · 28/08/2019 14:37

It's all been kicking off on one of the higher education threads - 3 vs 4 A levels.
Some of the posts are erm "interesting"

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/08/2019 15:10

I've just had a glance. I guessed some of the names who would be in the middle of it before I looked. Grin

HesMyLobster · 28/08/2019 16:23

I'm off for a peek too. Could tell you at least 5 names I know will be there! Grin

TapasForTwo · 28/08/2019 16:32

Mine obviously Grin

Bronzegate · 28/08/2019 16:54

A fracas on a Higher Education thread? I can guess who the common denominator is, and it's not you, Tapas. Grin

raspberryrippleicecream · 28/08/2019 19:32

Ooh I have a good idea who it might be too! Am off to see...

HesMyLobster · 28/08/2019 20:40

Wow! Shock
That was even better worse than I expected!
(and 4/5 of my predictions were correct!) Grin

I'm so glad we have such a friendly bunch on this thread!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/08/2019 21:00

Further Education does feel like rather a safe haven and you lot are lovely!

TapasForTwo · 28/08/2019 23:02

It's a pity we can't ring fence the thread to prevent an invasion.

In other news DD was happy to discover that the friend she made at the offer holders day will be at university with her.

Bronzegate · 28/08/2019 23:14

That's great Tapas
Nice that there will be a familiar face.

HesMyLobster · 29/08/2019 00:21

Tapas that's so lovely for her. DD made a friend during interviews and they stuck together through the whole of freshers, first year and beyond! They went travelling together over the summer and she's one of DD's housemates for 2nd year.
It's fab when they meet a kindred spirit!

ShanghaiDiva · 29/08/2019 00:41

Yes, all the usual suspects on that thread and plenty of puffed up self importance!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/08/2019 07:09

I'll start a new thread a bit later today. This one's nearly at the end and getting rather unwieldy.

On my first day at university, I recognised someone whose interview was in the same batch as mine. I went and said hello, she became one of my closest friends and we are still friends now.
