Happy Birthday to you and your DD Fantasy

2BoysandaCairn · 21/09/2018 16:11

Thought I would drop in,
Flowers to marmite hope your recovery is still on tarck
Cake to fantasy and DD, happy birthdays.
Good luck to all starting university and their HNC's at college, lots around us are set up for day release apprentices.
UrsulaPandress Ds kitchen is just a big square, half is dedicated to the kitchen, there is also a breakfast bar, with six bar stools for the 6 flats, and 2 leather 3 seater settee's.
He says they are lucky in that their's is an old one so has open views on three sides, instead of just 1 window in the newer ones.

Fresher week, he seems to do ever other night, signed up to couple of societies and joined the Rugby League team, drinking Wednesday night, training last night. 21 at training, they are overjoyed, usually have 10 fit players, need 13 for a team.

Can I ask a question to you wise ladies, please? Especially if you had a Dc already go.
We did brilliant at not crying on Sunday, all of us. But since Wednesday DWife and I feel quite down, he has previously been away at 5/6 goodbye sleepovers, and left on school, DofE and cadet trips. But this seems quite final, and like the first step of him not needing us, we have had one phone call. He will text if unsure, but quite happy to go 48 hours without contact. Please note we are delighted he has settled and seems happy, but we are struggling abit, missing him
Is it usual and does it pass. God we are clueless Smile

Finally good luck to all Dc waiting to go off on their new adventures, whether university, college, gap years, jobs. I hope the coming weeks and months bring them happiness and success.

DD and I seemed to breeze through the whole thing with nary a tear, (apart from over the horse of course) but I am having to adjust my mindset into realising that this is the next stage. In conversation the other day she mentioned getting a horse when she has finished at Uni and I said something about it not being me that would be looking after it but she sniffed at the idea and said 'Well you are coming with me of course.' Bless her little cotton socks.

I think I am treating it a bit like a long distance relationship. A phone call every day, a couple of texts and a date in the diary for when we will see each other again.

marmiteloversunite · 21/09/2018 16:34

Hi all! I am doing ok. Not as painful as I thought it would be. Still on the paracetamol and ibuprofen. Drain still in. Had lots of lovely visitors today so now recovering!

DH took DD to university today and I was fine. No tears. She was so excited. DH and my brother helped her set up her room/kitchen stuff and took her food shopping. She is now there trying to meet her flat mates. One nice girl and three boys who are hiding in their rooms. One of their mums made her son come out and say hello. Made me smile.

DD has gone to the kitchen to make a cup of tea and try to meet people. So proud of her as she finds social things quite difficult.

UrsulaPandress · 21/09/2018 16:46

Lovely to hear from you marmite and that you sound so upbeat.

It has been a real eye opener for me how different boys and girls are when making the move to University.

TheThirdOfHerName · 21/09/2018 16:52

marmite it's good to hear from you.
The story about the boy whose mum made him go out and say hello has made me smile too.

chocolateworshipper · 21/09/2018 16:55

Happy birthday to Fantasy and DD Cake

Lovely to hear from you marmite! Glad to hear things are ok.

I'm now into Prom planning for DD2! I can't believe that it's been 3 years since I started planning for DD1's. Can anyone remember prices - does £350 for an 8 seater limo seem reasonable?

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 21/09/2018 17:10

Happy Birthday Fantasy senior and junior!

Glad to hear you are doing ok, marmite.

2Boys my DS1 went to uni 2 years ago. I do still have 2 at home, but I found that terms are short, holidays are long and they appreciate being taken out for lunch at the weekend if it's close enough to you. I message DS1 (he doesn't do phone calls or FaceTime) every couple of days or so. Flowers

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/09/2018 17:27

Due to v. outing reasons (please put fingers in your eyes if you recognise me) I'm going to have to take dd to uni on the train. Thus ditching most of the packing we've done.
Any tips?

Happy Birthday Fantasy and your dd.

Not all girls have amazing social skills, not all boys don't but from my limited survey there is a difference at this age.

UrsulaPandress · 21/09/2018 17:39

OYBBK - My friend commented the other day that they did not have to do a huge removal when they took their sons to Oxford and Cambridge mainly due to the fact they were catered and boys.

Not ideal but I am sure you will manage - can you send stuff on?

TheThirdOfHerName · 21/09/2018 17:42

OhYouBadBadKitten
I would prioritise the following:

  • Things that can't easily be bought there: personal effects, photos, passport/ID, important documents, favourite clothes etc.

Things she will need in the first 24h: bedding, mug/bowl/spoon, toiletries, a few teabags, 1 loo roll etc.

GnomeDePlume · 21/09/2018 18:03

Glad to hear your recovery is going well Marmite

Thank you for the messages of support for DD2.

chocolateworshipper · 21/09/2018 18:06

kitten prioritise underwear, toothbrush, corkscrew, bottle opener and potato masher, and she'll be fine

marmiteloversunite · 21/09/2018 18:09

Potato masher!!Grin

UrsulaPandress · 21/09/2018 18:13

I've got a spare masher!

HardwickWhite · 21/09/2018 18:38

I’m delighted to hear you are doing well Marmite!

We are two weeks in now, and I’d like her home please. DH feels the same, so I think we will just drink 🍷🍷🍷 and keep our chins up.

UrsulaPandress · 21/09/2018 18:54

DD says she may pop home on Sunday for a decent meal.

Damn.

starfleet · 21/09/2018 19:04

Glad you're feeling up to visitors marmite - hoping your recovery is going well.

OYBBK - one of DS's flatmates came up on the train from London with his Mum. All clothes/bits and pieces/whatever he could get in his cases came with them and then they had just ordered everything else he needed at the big Asda closest to halls and did a click and collect. All his bedding, pillows, pans, crockery etc was ordered online before he got there.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/09/2018 19:14

lol at the masher!

We will have to unpack everything and put it into an essential pile or not essential/can buy pile and see where we go from there. I'd rather not order things given that we've bought them already but maybe I could have them couriered to her?

TheThirdOfHerName · 21/09/2018 19:34

The car is in the process of being packed at the moment. No potato masher; my excuse is that he's in catered halls.

captainoftheshipwreck · 21/09/2018 19:45

Marmite - lovely to hear you are recovering Flowers
Chocolate - I will need you tomorrow morning Sad

NoHaudinMaWheest · 21/09/2018 19:52

marmite glad you are doing well and that dd's move went well.

OYBBK Someone (I think it was Gnome) on here linked me to Unibaggage for sending stuff on. I looked at them and they seemed efficient and not too expensive. I didn't use them in the end as dd's boxes with a wheelchair in one and crutches in the other were too big but for standard stuff they are worth investigating. They will transport cases or boxes.

2BoysandaCairn · 21/09/2018 19:57

Good news about your recovery Marmite
All boys in Ds flat, 3 out of 6, had plastic colanders, all from Dunelm.
Non of girls did, there was 6 pizza cooking trays, 5 chopping boards and 6 pizza cutting wheels and 3 potato peelers (all boys again)
but not one potato masher insight
Think in flat 7, closest to mashed potato will be oven ready chipsGrin
Though he says he has great flatmates and his toaster (only 1 in flat) is in great demand
Ellen
Thank you,
Yes we have Ds2 at home, well I say at home he spends more time in his bedroom and out with GF, then he does with us.
Good luck to TheThirdofhername
OYBBK good luck on the train, could you use Wilko, they will have stuff at local store ( not sure about posher shops)
Also in Lincoln there was a couple of companies based close to the university, who would move students belongings from home to their depot to be collected.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 21/09/2018 20:00

That's really good to know NoHaudin, thank you :)
