Those are the sort of hours DD's boyfriend keeps. Throw in vast amounts of alcohol, hangovers and sleeping through lectures. How students manage to achieve a good degree with this kind of lifestyle is beyond me.

Petalflowers · 14/10/2018 21:05

I usually do a a tray of Yorkshire’s. Ie. 12 (three each). Obviously, with dc1 away, don’t need to make so many. However, I still end up making the same quantity of mixture (no Aunt Bessie Yorkshire’s here).

My dc knows he has to be in bed by 10pm on a regular basis, and will often go up earlier. He’s like me, can’t do late nights.

TheThirdOfHerName · 14/10/2018 21:05

DS1 is the same at the moment. Not going out so much now but staying up socialising with his flatmates until 3-4am and then trying to go to 9am lectures. It is definitely catching up with him. He has already missed four lectures due to exhaustion and is now worrying about being behind with work.

raspberryrippleicecream · 14/10/2018 22:25

Congratulations to your DD Gnome, lovely news.

My older DS1 went to a Pysics fair this week, with uni. He said they have a careers appointment with department later this term. Starting to realise there will be life beyond uni! He is in third year of four, but I suppose some are doing three years and DS1 may yet choose to leave next summer. Or not be allowed to continue!

Lonicera what a rotten experience for your DD.

DD appears to be achieving a balance between studying/going out, even allowing for a bit of downplaying on the social front for my benefit. She says she never gets beyond the 'pre's'.

On the other hand she is already getting anxious about the December exams (which do actually count). As it was anxiety that affected her A level exams it was going to happen.

raspberryrippleicecream · 14/10/2018 22:26

As for Yorkshire Puddings, I no longer have to make vegan Yorkshire Pudding as well as regular!

Knittinganewme · 14/10/2018 22:39

DS has not yet realised that parents bang on about diet, sleep and exercise for a reason. He is going to bed much later than he did under my roof and there was one day last week when they started at 7.30. I'm sure he'll sort it out for himself in time.

I've not had an update since 7pm but that was round six of vomiting for this afternoon. That ensuite bathroom has just paid for itself. I have told him that fit and healthy teens do not die from diarrhoea and vomiting even if it feels as if they will. I feel sorry for him, he is very rarely ill and has nothing to compare this to.

Nettleskeins · 14/10/2018 23:38

oh poor fellow, that is rough. I hope he is going to stay in bed tomorrow and not go to lectures. especially if it is d & v virus. But perhaps it was a foodstuff.

it is tipping down outside. the gutters sound like the gutters on the Ark. I feeling a bit guilty because I just put the cat out. At the front. and the cat flap is at the back of the house. This weekend has been quite hectic, the thought of waking up tomorrow at sparrows is not attractive. if it is raining. ds has a room inspection.

LoniceraJaponica · 15/10/2018 07:06

What kind of universities have room inspections? All of them?

TheThirdOfHerName · 15/10/2018 07:12

Theoretically, any university-owned accommodation can do room inspections (it'll be in the contract). I imagine they are looking for breaches of regulations (e.g. fire safety) rather than tidiness.

marmiteloversunite · 15/10/2018 07:47

We had DD1 home for 24 hours at the weekend to celebrate DD2's 16th Birthday. It was so lovely to see her. She seems to be coping well and happy. She had a "sleepover " in DD2's bedroom which was sweet as they miss each other. Think it was harder when she left yesterday though. Not sure if she is coming home for reading week and Bristol uni goes on til 21st December.
DD2 will probably go and visit for a couple of days in half term.

Starting treatment on Friday 26th October so I am on a mission this week to do some more Xmas shopping, especially stocking stuff as they are fiddly and time consuming.

raspberryrippleicecream · 15/10/2018 07:57

Lonicera DS1 had them in his halls. And DD's does them too.

Knitting hope feels better soon.

raspberryrippleicecream · 15/10/2018 09:41

Marmite good luck with shopping Flowers

LoniceraJaponica · 15/10/2018 11:51

Good luck with the treatment marmite Flowers

TheThirdOfHerName · 15/10/2018 14:30

marmite hope your Christmas prep distracts you from thinking about your upcoming treatment.

Nettleskeins · 15/10/2018 15:24

marmite that is sweet they had such a nice time together. i may try that next time with dses, put them in same room as a "treat" and it might improve their reactions to each other. Stocking fillers are such fun at this age aren't they, fiddly and expensive yes, but it is so nice to buy things which aren't strictly necessary for once, especially when you feel you have instil budgeting in teenagers. When they were children they almost had too much stuff but finally it feels like proper treats they wouldn't normally get. Especially now the party bag age is over Shock

I have just been munching a branded vegan snack "bomb" of high nutritional value, all coconut and dates squished into a ball. It has been amazingly filling. This is what I need to send ds for his breakfast. It would fit in an envelope but it might be quite heavy to post Hmm

Lonicera I think they are checking for pets, cannabis and a second cohabitee, also dilapidations

HesMyLobster · 15/10/2018 15:29

Thinking of you Marmite, good luck with the Christmas preparations- you've even inspired me to start a tentative first list today!
(I usually don't start until after bonfire night)

DD has almost completed her next essay today - 2 days ahead of schedule! She learned from the last one to leave herself a bit of processing/editing time rather than working right up to her deadline.
I was worried that she would find the workload heavy-going - she has 2 essays per week on top of her daily language lesson (for which there is always "homework" plus prep for the next lesson)
She's really enjoying the course content so far though so I think that's helping.

HesMyLobster · 15/10/2018 15:33

One of DD's friends got busted for having an "illegal" coffee machine in her room - apparently they are not allowed. She received an email saying if it was still there at the next inspection it would be "removed" Shock

The girl was furious as kettles are permitted and she said she couldn't see the difference. She sent a protesting email back but I haven't heard about the response yet.

Knittinganewme · 15/10/2018 15:42

The search was for illicit hamsters back in my day. I'm assuming that DS has had time to build up a protective layer of socks and underpants on the carpet which totally covers the crumbs on the floor.

He's not thrown up since 3am so I think the worst has passed. He wanted to come home or me to come and look after him at which point I sent him the photo of my bucket lined with a bin bag. I haven't used it yet but it's a possibility.

captainoftheshipwreck · 15/10/2018 16:43

Hope shopping goes well marmite, have been wondering how you are Flowers

captainoftheshipwreck · 15/10/2018 16:59

Knitting - maybe they are looking for illegal MASHERS Grin

TheThirdOfHerName · 15/10/2018 17:49

Nettleskeins so it's a dense sphere of seeds & nuts etc? Are you sure it wasn't one of these ?
Grin

TheThirdOfHerName · 15/10/2018 17:55

pets, cannabis and a second cohabitee

It could be the name of a new film...

LoniceraJaponica · 15/10/2018 18:14

If the students get a warning of room inspections won't they just hide these things away or dispose of them?

Nettleskeins · 15/10/2018 18:27

cheep cheep Third Smile well, it will get me through the winter
I've also bought some Yorkshire tea to get me through the autumn. My tea seems to be getting weaker and more specialist by the day.

Ds passed his room inspection. He said no-one yet had been known to fail it. In block A. (sounds like prison)
He then sent me a text about his towels and bathmat, which needed washing after a month they were beginning to smell and then followed a long detailed conversation about whether "whites" was too hot for blue bathmat as there was no temperature indication. If only the same detail were applied to recipe requests or musical analysis.

knitting a hamster. aah. I can see the temptation.

Nettleskeins · 15/10/2018 18:29

lonicera a cannabis plantation or a hamster run might be difficult to hide. An illegal roommate might be easier.
