Ds1 course I think without checking as I'm feeling lazy is 8:2 with females being in the majority.

He had a letter a couple of days ago telling him that his student finance has been approved after the course change etc. He declined a card for that account, set up a direct debit for his rent and a standing order each monday into his spending account. Hopefully this will deter him from drinking it all!
Fantasy, it's great news about your dd course. Hopefully her accommodation will be sorted out soon.
Flowers Marmite, I hope today has been a good day. Thinking of you.

UrsulaPandress · 05/10/2018 21:49

I wasn't taking it personally 😂.

LoniceraJaponica · 05/10/2018 21:54

Interesting about the home visits this weekend. DD's BF told her that he wasn't the least bit homesick and didn't miss anyone.

HardwickWhite · 05/10/2018 22:00

DD was sad tonight because everyone has gone home for the weekend. She is visiting family tomorrow though which should cheer her up.

We didn’t really talk to her about coming home. We’ll be seeing her at half term, and soon she will find out about what they expect re reading week.

marmiteloversunite · 05/10/2018 22:12

Hi all. Each day is getting a little easier but I can still only do about an hour out of the house and then I need a nap! I have my oncology appointment on Wednesday so I will find out about the chemo then. Have been quite tearful this week. Cancer and especially breast cancer is everywhere in the media this month, so hard to get away from it.

DD1 is coming home next weekend for DD2's 16th Birthday which will be lovely. Good to have something nice to look forward to.

Hope you all have a nice weekend!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 05/10/2018 22:37

Flowers marmite, tears sound very healthy, but I know it must be hard. What a lovely weekend to look forward to.

I am forever turning the radio off or the TV over.

Fingers in ears. La la la.

starfleet · 05/10/2018 23:01

marmite - it's not the easiest of time for you - hope all goes well at your appointment next week and you have your DD's visit to look forward to.

No idea of F/M ratio on DS's course but I will ask over the weekend.

He came home last week so I won't see him until near the end of the month as it's my DM's birthday. I'll probably visit him once before term ends - only because there is something I would particularly like to see in the city were he is.

Nettleskeins · 05/10/2018 23:03

well ds certainly hasn't come home! I am wondering whether to text him before he completely spends this month's allowance (no more till the 15th Oct) to come home, do his washing for free, and have four hot meals, and nick some fruit...or else he won't even be able to get home (a tenner)
No, I'm standing firm.

marmite surgery completely takes it out of you. your body has had a shock. a 16th birthday is a lovely thing to look forward to.

listening to Coldplay. Why didn't I realise how brilliant it was before. Somehow missed out on the Coldplay era. 18 years of no pop radio, all seemed too noisy at the time.

ursula that sounds lovely too, they aren't far away are they in reality?

Nettleskeins · 05/10/2018 23:10

lonicera sounds a bit tactless of him if you ask me! still it would be worse if he was miserable, surely?

I've just finished the New Galbraith/aka JKRowling. Very impressive if slightly unpleasant as always. In an attempt to learn some "history" I've now bought a Ken Follett from Sainsbury's, first attempt at that sort of book. dh pointed out it was not medieval after all, and I had got the wrong series.

ShanghaiDiva · 05/10/2018 23:51

Yes -ds is at Warwick. They may indeed cross paths or perhaps already have!

captainoftheshipwreck · 06/10/2018 07:19

Marmite- sending you Flowers

captainoftheshipwreck · 06/10/2018 07:21

Posted too soon! Marmite- sending you Flowers and hug

flatmouse · 06/10/2018 07:48

Is it @Petalflowers DS who is doing an apprenticeship? How's that going? And any other apprenticeships/other paths?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 06/10/2018 07:56

It is Flatmouse :)

Thinking of you Marmite.

On the m/f ratio DD2's course is now 100 percent female but that is because she's now the only one doing it! The other lad dropped out because he found the maths too hard.

DD1 has got a couple of interviews and a week long trial lined up. All science roles so she's very happy.

DS is very close to starting his RAF application. I think DD2's departure was the spur he needed to get serious.

Glad to hear people are settling in. Lonely, broke Sundays were the reason I came up with the rainy day box.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 06/10/2018 11:27

DS2's computing HNC has 10 students and 3 are girls. The first girls DS has seen since GCSEs! Grin There are 2 boys with the same name as well. So 30% girls and 20% Jack Jones. (Name changed etc...)

It's DS2's birthday today, but he's with his father this weekend. I have no idea what to get him. He is living at home, doesn't go out due to ASD and I can't even give him money as his student maintenance loan has come through and he has more money than he knows what to do with! I've suggested all sorts of things including taking him to a concert as he likes music but he's not interested. Aargh! So far he has the Guinness book of records and a Toblerone.

marmite you are allowed to be tearful. Flowers

NoHaudinMaWheest · 06/10/2018 11:40

Ellen sympathies on the difficulties of present buying.

I asked dd about her male/female course balance. Linguistics is overwhelmingly female. Maths is largely male though with a reasonable number of females. Greek is about half and half.
Her classes are huge though. 300 in linguistics and so many in maths that the lectures are run twice. Even Greek has 40 odd.

Knittinganewme · 06/10/2018 12:01

Nettles you forgot scanning and printing in your list of free domestic services.

Marmite it's a marathon, not a sprint. Take a nap when you need one, take two if you want to and leave the non-urgent stuff for another time.

I'm not even going to ask DS about the gender balance because he won't have noticed.

TheThirdOfHerName · 06/10/2018 13:06

I do sympathise with the difficulties of buying gifts for a certain type of young man on the autistic spectrum.

I can buy any of the following:

  • D&D manuals that he doesn't already have.
  • QI books that he doesn't already have.
  • Minecon Earth 2018 memorabilia (not available in the UK).
  • Books by Matt Parker, Alex Bellos etc that he doesn't already have.
  • Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition (if he doesn't already have this year's one).
TheThirdOfHerName · 06/10/2018 13:07

The above is for DS2.
DS1 is very happy with chocolate, alcohol, clothes, money towards gig/festival tickets, socks, headphones...

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 06/10/2018 13:19

QI book might be a good call! DS2 already has all the Mastermind, Eggheads, Brain of Britain and Pointless books available. I wonder if there's a University Challenge or Only Connect book?

MsAwesomeDragon · 06/10/2018 13:24

The gender balance of dd's course is about 90% male. It's computing science, so I'm quite impressed they've got as much as 10% females doing the course (although DD has not done an actual count, so it's not exact). When I did comp sci 18 years ago there were only 3 of us girls among 200 boys. I quite enjoyed it Wink

DD has been messaging this morning because I messaged her first and she's been to a quiz, a ceilidh, a seige weapons demonstration, and a pizza party. She's also been to orchestra and some induction lectures. She's going to join the living history society tomorrow to learn how to fight with medieval weapons. She has also chosen her minor subject, which was going to be maths but it was full by the time she tried to enroll, so she's fine for Italian, which is a bit of a surprise as she's never done Italian before. All in all it sounds like she's having a great time, and she's most relieved nobody has pressured her to go out partying.

HesMyLobster · 06/10/2018 13:26

Take care and take it slow Marmite, there's absolutely no rush.

Just asked DD (on FaceTime) about the gender split.
Her course is exactly 50:50. There are 16 of them on it and 8 boys 8 girls.
She thinks her college cohort of about 200 is slightly more girls, but we couldn't find data anywhere to back that up.

She has loved freshers week and had an absolute blast, been out every night, although she's been pretty sensible with drinking and always switches to water after midnight (I have no idea where she gets it from Hmm)
I think she's looking forward to a few nights in next week though!

She doesn't plan to come home at all before Christmas. Her boyfriend has nipped down for the day today, and will probably visit every other week.
I'm hoping to go and see her during my half term, but will wait and see how busy she is.
