Pretty broken sleep here too, but I've already had a witty text from DS this morning Smile.

Hope your DD can really make the best of her room Violets.

voilets · 30/09/2018 08:51

Yes, fingers crossed - don't think she'll let room bother her. I think the freshers group didn't go to be until 3.15 and thus she was out of her sleep routine and over excited. Said she had a lovely time.

derekthe1adyhamster · 30/09/2018 09:14

It’s lovely hearing all these positive stories.
DS has found work, but he’s spending all his spare time with his girlfriend, which is fine but it does make me worry that won’t want to go to Uni next year because he has chosen one at the other end of the country, with a 7 hour train journey. Still I guess it’s his life.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/09/2018 09:25

I guess they do need to work it it for themselves Derek. But brilliant that he has found work.

dd slept well :) Apparently it was a bit noisy at 10:30 and that was it! After them being offered free drinks I'm rather surprised and also quite pleased! She discovered we hadn't packed toothpaste....

Hi all, just skimmed read the last few pages.

Glad the last drop offs have gone well.

Third - sorry you missed out on your g and t.

Downey - glad Downey jr got accepted for rugby.

Marmite - hope you are still recovering well. I’ve had a couple of ops in the last few years and know you can have good days and bad. you feel a lot better one day, and can’t understand why you feel rubbish the next.

Love the certificates.

My dc went out shopping with his flat mates last night. They walked to the supermarket and were going to catch an Uber back (do you catch an Uber, Order one, ...?). He’s been watching the Ryder cup all weekend.

GnomeDePlume · 30/09/2018 09:59

Petal I think we will get to the point where you will just need to think 'taxi' and one will appear!

LoniceraJaponica · 30/09/2018 10:06

I believe Ubers are very popular with students whose halls are not close enough to walk into town from.

Knittinganewme · 30/09/2018 10:13

I've had much less contact with DS this week which is good seeing as I only hear from him when he's got a problem. He was unhappy with the enforced jollity (and drinking) in the first week but that has passed now.

I'll be happy when I'm not listening to complaints about the timetable, they are split into groups A and B except DS appears to be in both groups and has a timetable that reflects this. They don't take the register until the end of the lecture so it's at that point that he finds he was not supposed to be there. For some reason he seems to have lost the power of speech and be unable to say "who do I need to see to get this fixed?" He's on double lectures until he gets it sorted and you would think that was an incentive to get moving.

Knittinganewme · 30/09/2018 10:13

Back in the mid eighties it was cheaper to get a black cab for four than it was to take the bus.

UrsulaPandress · 30/09/2018 10:21

He's doing double lectures!?!

Knittinganewme · 30/09/2018 10:34

Ursula yes, he's turning up to everything on his timetable, getting to the end of the lecture and finding his name is not on the list. You would think this was a powerful incentive to pull your finger out and get it sorted, or at least work out which lecture series you weren't required at. You would think..

raspberryrippleicecream · 30/09/2018 10:51

Glad everyone's drop offs are going Ok.

We had a nice day with DD yesterday, she's mostly fine but I'm a bit worried her academic anxiety will blow up again.

Heading down to DS1s uni for 3rd year drop off now. He took a car load down in the week and the car (estate) is still full.

He is off campus, but we'll swing by campus to drop his music instrument off, love seeing the Freshers arriving.

TheThirdOfHerName · 30/09/2018 12:11

Next semester DS1 will have a choice of modules - he has already submitted his preferences, three months before the deadline. Grin

He has some friends on a different course who have a choice of modules this semester and had to submit their preferences by the end of September. DS1 accidentally got a bit swept up in the sense of urgency.

The reason I'm finding it amusing is that DS1 is usually the person who submits things 5 minutes before the deadline.

Mistigri · 30/09/2018 12:31

Knitting, well at least he should master the course content if he's done it twice lol! DD's year group are split into A and B and then by options, which led for a very complicated timetable and some timetable clashes. Hopefully all sorted now ...

DD had a wobble this morning. Went to launderette to find all the machines occupied and then had a panic about clean clothes because she literally does not have an hour to spare Monday to Wednesday. I've sent her a large pack of socks by amazon and I'll do her washing when I see her next weekend. Bit overwhelmed by the workload too but part of that is not making good use of the little free time she has, and part of it is setting the bar too high.

Nettleskeins · 30/09/2018 12:43

I'm hoping that ds will begin to see the point of thin warm woolly jumpers which don't need to be washed so often as bulky cotton hoodies. I'm slowly dripfeeding him more and more merino wool stuff. But he still has to wash his sheets, and I can see this being a big chore, just bothering, when you have all the more immediate laundry to worry about.

I spent the night with the most terrible toothache (dosed it with nurofen and need to get antibotics, either today or tomorrow if I can hold on) and unfortunately found myself worrying what ds would do if he had toothache or a sore throat which kept him up all night, when I KNOW he hasn't registered with a GP or dentist. Hopefully he would just come home and collapse in an emergency but he gets these terrible sore throats every year (who knows when it will hit) mostly when low ebb or when he does too much.

however, there lies madness. I will just have to accept he will get ill, and it is a learning curve for him to deal with it or ask for help.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/09/2018 13:27

That is an odd problem knitting! Attempting to be Hermione Granger!

dd seems to be settling in really well. Approaching other students who are sat alone and befriending them, which is frankly astounding for her. She has been listening to my advice! Paid her accomodation already, tackling the rest of her paperwork before the afternoons activities. I'm feeling very reassured.

Slightly puzzled by the picture of toothpaste and mouthwash I was sent Grin

How will your ds dry the jumpers Nettle? Dd moved over to hoodies precisely because you can't tumble dry jumpers.

Sorry about the rotten toothache :(

That's hilarious Third! I hope he still likes them by then.

Misti I can imagine dd panicking about laundry,

Hello!
I don't know how many of you remember me, but I just thought I'd pop on to update on how things are.
Moved in a couple of weeks ago, I'm on the second floor of one of the renovated houses in my accommodation so my room is quite nice. All my flatmates are really lovely, sometimes we just sit in the kitchen and chat. I wouldn't call any of them my friends just yet, but we do get along really well.
Also, I've changed my degree course to something related but at the same time quite different, I'm enjoying it so much more than my old degree and it gives me the chance to learn a language which is something I've wanted to do for years!
I meet up with some friends on Wednesdays and we hang out for a couple of hours so I get to see people.
All in all, it's better than I thought it would be!

UrsulaPandress · 30/09/2018 14:30

That's great news OYBBK.

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 30/09/2018 14:39

I remember you, DrPeppers. Glad to hear it's all going well so far.

Everyone seems to be settling in and coping well. Double lectures aside!

DS2 has some homework but doesn't seem keen to get on with it. Sigh. He's seeing his mentor on Wednesday. Hopefully she'll have more luck with him.

Bakeandyarn · 30/09/2018 14:46

nettle I found the same problem last night, over thinking “what will happen if”. I was awake at about 3am and couldn’t get back to sleep, DS goes tomorrow and I will be glad when he’s got 5e first week under his belt, it’s felt like a long wait now that all of his friends have gone.

Nettleskeins · 30/09/2018 15:16

machine washable merino of the sports wear type blends Kitten Grin not beautiful cashmere cardigans. I agree that would not end well..[imagines ds trying to "reshape whilst damp"]
Mind you I used to have friends who delighted in folding their jumpers in tissue paper so anything is possible..I only learnt that whilst on holiday with a fellow student, and that you weren't supposed to share towels Blush in our family there were so many people there just was no towel etiquette. Luckily ds is ensuite.[grim]

TheThirdOfHerName · 30/09/2018 15:39

DrPeppersPhD it's good to hear from you and I'm glad to hear it's going well

TheThirdOfHerName · 30/09/2018 15:51

DS1's girlfriend is going up to see him mid-week and she has kindly agreed to take up a carrier bag of stuff from me.

He rarely buys himself clothes and I didn't realise how few clothes he has until he was unpacking in his room. I've included:

  • New pair of jeans.
  • New t-shirt.
  • New hoodie.
  • Plate and knife to replace the ones that got thrown away.
  • Two side plates as he didn't have any.
  • Some chocolate.
  • A card with an encouraging, upbeat note written inside.
