He was fine when I spoke to him later - said he'd been sat in the kitchen chatting to his new flat mates and talking about getting takeaway in tonight.

He forgot a few bits but he has money and there are shops.

GnomeDePlume · 15/09/2018 19:43

flatmouse I think she is planning to go out. Freshers week seems to have turned into big business.

UrsulaPandress · 15/09/2018 20:05

News flash. Her flat mates are sooooo nice.

Maybe I'll sleep tonight.

UrsulaPandress · 15/09/2018 20:08

Oh oh. Jumps up and down

There was a welcome box with Hershey bars, hot sauce and condoms.

LoniceraJaponica · 15/09/2018 20:11

Hershey Bars Hmm
I bet they couldn't get rid of them. They taste like vomit.

voilets · 15/09/2018 20:24

Feel excited now some of your DD have been dropped off and all the fun begins!! Wish I was that age again! Smile

Aw Starfleet - remember my DS was petrified when we left him, made me a bit stressed and sad! But he, like most, did just fine. Sounds like yours is meeting people straight away. Mine is still living with his neighbour met on 1st day!

Ursula - how nice that flatmates are cool- consoling for you. Never tasted a Hershey bar!

voilets · 15/09/2018 20:25

should read ' now your DC have been dropped off' boys allowed!

voilets · 15/09/2018 20:42

2boys - hope you didn't need the tissues but are tucking into the chocolates and sipping the Wine. Smile

Downeyhouse · 15/09/2018 21:12

Thanks for all the updates from this weekends dropper-offers.

Exam season seems so long ago now.

Raising my wine glass tonight to all the lovely flat mates your dc Have Met today.

Nettleskeins · 15/09/2018 21:16

today has been long but successful. Dropped off by train, and felt very smug at all the people trying to unload their cars in 15 seconds flat...until I tried lugging all the Click and Collect and groceries (I lost my nerve at last moment and bought groceries from local supermarket) back to his room and then he had gone off to get his Fresher's wrist band, and disappeared completely from lugging duties.

I cannot believe he is in such a beautiful city (Lobster, I think you are next for the starry eyed feelings, same city, different uni)

Very amazed by the sight of all the parents bringing in boxes and boxes of possessions, included potted palms, Nutella filled biscuits, dinner services (4 place settings) rice cookers, steam irons (I was wrong about that, it obviously is allowed but ds doesn't get one) And siblings part of the wave goodbye too. Was mindful of the need not to talk to any parents as it is not School Gate. Hope I didn't overdo this, but ds was giving me dastardly look when I attempted pleasantries.

Beautiful city alas equals no storage (property prices), the kitchen had just about enough as it is only 4 people now in his flat, but the bedroom was seriously low on cupboard or drawer space, and nowhere to put a pop up laundry basket! The double bed also takes up inmho far too much space which could have been better used on cupboard or seating. Not impressed by the architect of that room. But ds likes it and thinks it is plush. 14 msquare including the shower and loo.

Knitting there was plenty of underbed storage though..And I had no underbed storage boxes in hand Hmm Ds then insisted on keeping the manky suitcases under his bed which I thought I was going to be able to bring home on pretext that they didn;t fit anywhere.

I felt very sorry for him when we arrived in the flat, which was empty of every foodstuff, when I watched the other parents trooping by with crates of groceries, which is why I then went to the Coop 10 mins down the road, only to find it was one of those expensive local Coops and didn't even have stock cubes or herbs and spices in cardboard packets, imagine. Or tins of biscuits, double curses. Still it had jeye cloths and flash and basic carbs. And my current fixation, that ds should have UHT milk in his kitchen cupboard for emergencies.

Ds seems to be meeting people outside his flat at the moment rather in his flat, I think the small number makes it rather too intense to want to overdo the introductions at this stage. There is a cluster of three flats on each landing, each with four or five students, so that is probably an easy form of cross fertilisation. He is off to a barbecue tonight.

Many boys (and I hope that is not too sexist) have according to ds brought their X boxes. Oh no. Not the people in his flat though. And ds didn't.

We forgot: dressing gown cord. Soap. Recipes. Jumpers. raincoat. warm trousers. sportswear. Why did it weigh so much I wonder.

Nettleskeins · 15/09/2018 21:19

Ds had a welcome pack which he screened from my eyes. I thought he was screening the Pot Noodle and The Boost, but maybe it was the condoms. It did have a more useful item though which he waved at me, A Sample of Surf Washing Powder.

flatmouse · 15/09/2018 21:22

Well done nettles ! Fortunately DS not considered/mentioned taking PlayStation (I wouldn't have been happy).

flatmouse · 15/09/2018 21:23

(Btw we're going to need a new thread soon - is there one already? Don't want to lose you all!)

Nettleskeins · 15/09/2018 21:30

My cookware that I ordered turned out to be just right too, apart from 5 fluted whisky glass tumblers (what was I thinking at that point?) I returned and the only frying pan, that I had thought was very large,, was a mini. For some reason 26 cm sounded wide, but it isn't. Maths. Ds's beer mug was a tankard too, and I thought it would be a standard water glass. He was grateful for everything. Smile He needs a tin to put biscuits in though. Salt was also missing from our list.

starfleet · 15/09/2018 21:39

DS's welcome pack contained no condoms but did have some sanitary towels in it.

There are 9 in his flat including him - he'd been chatting to them via whatsapp before we arrived. The kitchen is big with lots of cupboard space, two hobs etc and tea /coffee were provided for visitors which was a nice touch.

DS hasn't taken his xbox and we didn't have any room left in the car for it.

LoniceraJaponica · 15/09/2018 21:40

I realise that universities don't want students with STIs and unwanted pregnancies, but I sometimes wonder if the bigger beds and free condoms encourage the students to be a little more "liberal" than they might have been?

LoniceraJaponica · 15/09/2018 21:43

And do they give condoms to all students? What about female students from ethnic backgrounds where sex before marriage is a punishable crime?

(I hope I haven't offended anyone)

Nettleskeins · 15/09/2018 21:58

I'm not even sure if ds's box did have condoms, it only occurred to me when someone else mentioned it, as a reason for his dramatic barring the way, but then he knows how I feel about Pot Noodle.

I think the mixed sex flats would probably not have female students whose parents felt very strongly, or who themselves felt very strongly on this matter. After all, most of the universities have women only halls of residence, including ds's. (indeed, reading the reviews it sounds like an especially nice hall, AND it was catered)

PandaG · 15/09/2018 22:04

I remember my mum on my moving in day at university having to explain that the object sellotaped to the front of my freshers welcome magazine was a condom!

captainoftheshipwreck · 15/09/2018 22:05

Maybe he was screening a POTATO MASHER Grin

HesMyLobster · 15/09/2018 22:22

Well done Ursula and DD for staying dry eyed, and hooray to her flat mates being lovely, must be such a relief!
*
Nettles* how exciting! I can't wait to go back in 2 weeks. Shame we weren't both doing drop off the same weekend, we could have met for a coffee (or gin! Wink) perhaps at the next one . . ?!

It's so good to hear all of your experiences and stories, thankyou all for sharing!

HesMyLobster · 15/09/2018 22:23

Grin potato masher!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 15/09/2018 22:27
