They've left college, now we are trying not to think about a certain date.

Very sorry to hear that hobbit Thanks

flatmouse · 03/08/2018 11:56

Sorry for your news hobbit

DS struggling to get a summer job - not likely to happen now that summers almost over! He thinks there is something wrong with his CV - well there is - no experience!! Just needs someone to take a chance on him.

Have had long discussions re plan B. He's now thinking if he doesn't get his firm (no backup as firm had lower requirements and is the course he wants), then he'll do an apprenticeship. So i think we'll be looking for help if that rolls around. Can't help thinking that in the sphere he is interested in a "similar" course at diff uni would put him in better place at end than apprenticeship.

Trying to get him to tidy out his big wardrobe - suspect there is still GCSC stuff in there!

flatmouse · 03/08/2018 12:17

Just been looking at clearing on UCAS - and the course he has firmed is listed - does that mean that there are "at this time" spare places on the course - so likely not over-subscribed? If that is the case, then positive news as hopefully if he doesn't do as well as he hopes he can convince them over the phone to still take him.
(Sure it wasn't this hard in my day - mind you i went to Poly via clearing - and it was a good week post results that i got my place - which switched to a Uni during my first year!)

UrsulaPandress · 03/08/2018 12:32

I must be really thick. Where have you found a list of clearing courses on UCAS?

UrsulaPandress · 03/08/2018 12:35

Ignore me. It's the same one I looked at before - DD's course shows up but with the same grade requirements so I echo your question - if it is not oversubscribed will they lower the requirements I wonder.....?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/08/2018 12:47

I reckon that does mean they would lower the grade requirements, because you know that they already want those students they've given offers to.

Dd has made an appointment with the bank to create a student account after results day. It's a bit old fashioned to do it by appointment but when she tried to create one online with them it all went wrong and we never got to the bottom of why.

As a result of bank accounts being mentioned upthread, just read this article.

www.moneysavingexpert.com/students/Student-bank-account/

Useful information.

flatmouse · 03/08/2018 19:19

DD/DS need to remember to log in to student loans and update once you have new bank accounts!

HardwickWhite · 03/08/2018 19:34

Thanks for that Petal DD had been looking at the Santander a/c but depending on where she goes, the HSBC one might make more sense. If she ends up at her firm, she will likely be using air miles to come home, so the rail card might not be as attractive as amazon vouchers.

Downeyhouse · 03/08/2018 20:35

Thanks for the link Petal. I sent it to ds who informs me (how reliably I am not sure) that they don’t give the perks like risk cards to international students! He is feeling a bit disgruntled! :)

Downeyhouse · 03/08/2018 20:36

Risk cards???? Should be risk cards.

Up there with my old drunk rack.

The hazard of typing English on a foreign phone :)

Downeyhouse · 03/08/2018 20:36

I give up risk = rail!

Knittinganewme · 03/08/2018 21:01

I like risk cards, I liked the drunk rack too. My phone never seems to come up with anything quite so interesting.

Downeyhouse · 03/08/2018 21:04

The trick knitting is to have 3 different language keyboards! My phone jumps between them and just types whatever it fancies!!!!

raspberryrippleicecream · 03/08/2018 22:47

I too like the drunk rack!

DD got one of the phone sim cards from UCAS the other day, which was actually really handy as her brother got a new phone that day.

Did anyone with Newcastle offers get the email appearing to confirm places?

UrsulaPandress · 03/08/2018 23:04

I think Starfleet mentioned something.

It turns out dd had not checked the marketing box hence why she is not receiving stuff. Wise or not?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/08/2018 23:39

Long term wise. I expect there will be some sort of data scandal along the lines.

Very sorry to hear about your loss hobbit. Expected or not it does knock you sideways.

Anyone else's DC obsessively watching results opening film clips on social media? That is what DD2 is doing. Apparently they are rigged for TV (hence the fairly muted responses).

DD2 has her driving test next Thursday so that at least is a distraction. Just hoping that if she doesnt pass that she doesnt see it as some sort of portent of doom!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/08/2018 08:13

That's my fear too Gnome! It could be rather rocky if they don't pass! And if they don't pass and don't get the grades they need. Shock
It's beginning to feel like quite daft timing.

Watching results being opened online sounds like a perverse sort of torture.

OP posts:
Knittinganewme · 04/08/2018 09:26

We had the portent of doom driving test failure. I forget now what it was at the same time as (possibly mocks) but when I looked at it afterwards I had a sudden attack of "whatever was I thinking?"

Results are not on the radar here, I did mention on the appropriate day that it was two weeks today and was resolutely ignored. Full ostrich it is then.

flatmouse · 04/08/2018 09:43

DS not getting any UCAS treats either. Guessing he had either missed the option or (like his parents) does not encourage spam email. Suspect the former Grin

He has a phone interview for a part time job in a short while. Have encouraged him to think of some questions and to ensure it's a conversation. Even if he doesn't get the job, it's good experience and the first out of 30 applications to respond to him.

PostNotInHaste · 04/08/2018 11:56

There is definitely a fair bit of flexibility in some places, even on popular courses. Know of a vetinary student at Bristol last year who had the grades overall but missed the one she needed for one subject which had been specified. Was an anxious few days but they took her in the end.

NoHaudinMaWheest · 04/08/2018 12:34

Dd had a dream last night in which some the her teachers were ranting at her and her classmates about their awful results. One of them had got a T Grin.
So I think the chilled exterior is not all it seems.

We were in town yesterday and decided to tempt fate by buying some university stuff. If anyone is interested Debenhams have towel bales for £25 or £35 for two. They are not top quality but really quite good and thicker than John Lewis's university offering.

GnomeDePlume · 04/08/2018 12:41

I think DD2 is reassuring herself that people can open disappointing results and cope.

Debating whether or not to take The Date Which Must Not Be Mentioned as holiday or just work from home. If she gets the results for firm/insurance then I expect she will want to celebrate with friends. If not then she will need support.

Sod it, I'll take the day off and hide on my allotment with courgettes in my ears and pretend none of it is happening.

I take it we will be grouping here a week on Wednesday to check each others packs and synchronise watches.

What do we need? So far I have:

Tissues (for dabbing tears or clearing up big snotty sobs)
Gin - we won't be needing mixers or glasses by that point as we will already be drinking it neat from the bottle

What else?
