Dd borrowed the stapler - I assume that means revision? She also has a revision timetable, I saw it dumped from her bag onto the Sofa.
If she gets decent grades, she will have achieved them despite dreadful attendance.

Little DD has 1 GCSE to revise for too.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 29/03/2018 14:31

The going to uni box exists in my head only and I sadly keep forgetting what I've mentally put in there. I think it will be a charity shop trawl through the summer for crockery and stuff.

I have all my parents' kitchen stuff so DD will go off well stocked when she goes.

There is a sixth form prom (obvs) at a posh hotel in the city, new outfit required, and there is also a Y13 dinner, paid for by the school, at a local gastro pub, new outfit required. I keep telling her that student bedrooms have very small wardrobes, but there is always the floor of course.

Icouldbeknitting · 29/03/2018 14:57

DS had to list six accommodation preferences which have three different bed sizes so until he hears where he will be I don't know whether I can offload bedding from the airing cupboard or whether he'll need new.

UrsulaPandress · 29/03/2018 14:58

Six - that's a lot. DD only had to select 3.

FantasyAndHope · 29/03/2018 16:02

The WiFi has broke Shock spoke to internet provider and they said no wonder it’s broke as it’s obsolete and I should have had a letter reminding me to upgrade and renew my contract with them
Que a very unhappy dd as she cannot watch Netflix as a treat for revising or use it to work the wireless printer as we seem to have lost the wires to make it a wired printer Hmm
They’ve said it could take 3-5 days to arrive

FantasyAndHope · 29/03/2018 16:02

And by obsolete I mean the router posted too earlier

FantasyAndHope · 29/03/2018 16:03

*early

As we can see I’m clearly not having a good day technology wise Sad

flatmouse · 29/03/2018 16:10

DS had to list 8 accommodation preferences! He was really struggling after 3 :) He was given some stuff for uni at Xmas. Whereas i want to be prepared, i don't want to assume and am worried in case he doesn't get there.
He does seem to be focused now (will have Sunday/Monday off as visitors). I still worry too little too late.

TheSecondOfHerName · 29/03/2018 16:55

DS1 still hasn't received the validation email from his firm choice which will enable him to apply for accommodation. He phoned them and they said it would take "a couple of weeks" to come through.

During the time this email has been pending, DS1 has applied for student finance, had it approved, and received the paperwork by post.

Student Finance England: 1.
X University accommodation office: 0.

starfleet · 29/03/2018 17:57

DS has yet to actually confirm his first/insurance choices - it's something we are going to sit down and talk though this weekend. So we can't do anything about accommodation until he submits!

He is having a night off tonight. School finished for Easter today and we also had his last school report which made me a bit weepy - his teachers have written lovely things about him.

FantasyAndHope · 29/03/2018 19:51

We still can’t decide here on firm and insurance
Dd was certain she could firm goldsmiths until the whole discovery her RS notes were not of a B grade instead a D

Nettleskeins · 29/03/2018 20:33

we still have to go back and compare the two insurance choices. Still not sure which one to choose, so definitely cannot press the button. And his tutors said that they want to give him advice based on his latest grade, so that he doesnt select too high or too low, but only when he has given in the coursework etc.

He said the performance went well, but he is going to do it over again after Easter, in case he can improve one of the pieces. They have to do four in a row, no breaks or editing out faults, quite an unforgiving process.

TeresasGreen · 29/03/2018 22:44

NC again but not a newbie 😬

DDs prom has had to be cancelled because not enough people paid their deposit in time. I am terribly disappointed for the team of students who had worked so hard to put it together.

UrsulaPandress · 29/03/2018 23:39

Oh that's a shame. The girl organising dds prom has sent out some very forthright messages demanding money are set times.

HesMyLobster · 30/03/2018 01:06

Oh Teresa that is a shame Sad

Speaking of prom - DD has finally made up her mind to go! I'm so pleased, I'm sure she'd have regretted missing it. Tickets go on sale straight after Easter, and I'm feeling very relieved that I booked her a room at the premier inn next door to the venue weeks ago - just in case Wink as it's now fully booked!

DD has worked fairly solidly so far this week - she's discovered a very useful revision book for maths if anybody's DC are in need of help?
I have no idea why it's so good, but she seems very happy after spending 2 days with it!

Sorry, on my phone so can't do proper links!

Her main problem at the moment is the Latin Gcse that she's supposedly doing as an extra bit of fun! Hmm
She finally received the full spec (self taught and independent entry)

The first paper which she sat last year was fine, no problems at all, she learnt the vocab and the grammar and got a comfortable A*.
The second paper she's due to sit in May and has just discovered that as well as the Latin part (that's as she expected) there's also a literature section and a classical civilisation section (completely not expected!) ShockSomething to do with the exam changing to the new 1-9 format and there's no longer an option to just sit the language part.
So now she has to learn a brand new set text. In Latin. As well as teach herself about ancient Roman life. On top of revision for her actual A levels!

I tried to convince her to retract her entry for the exam, but she's determined to complete it. She has put a lot of work in to the language learning so I can understand why she wants to, but flipping heck! As if she hadn't got enough to do?!

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/03/2018 08:22

What a nightmare Lobster. Your dd sounds so similar to mine again - a refusal to change course in the face of adversity Grin I bet she will manage it though. Is she stressed by it?

No sign of prom happening here. It's a date on the calendar but none of the kids have heard anything about it. I'm not convinced it will happen, which is a bit of a shame.

OP posts:
UrsulaPandress · 30/03/2018 08:51

Dds prom is organised they are having wristbands for those who are 18 so they don't have to keep showing ID.

FantasyAndHope · 30/03/2018 09:27

There’s a ball they can do to but it includes all years and mainly for teachers and the older ones but dd doesn’t want to go

starfleet · 30/03/2018 09:45

DS was complaining about the all the "stuff" that has been organised over the next couple of months.

Apparently there are "lots of meals out". One for the class in his favourite subject, a form meal, a prefects dinner, one for the whole of Yr 13 and then prom....

Nettleskeins · 30/03/2018 09:55

Lobster I think you can learn the literature translation off by heart relatively easily (if you can find the translation) certainly the C set in our school managed to ace the O level without actually understanding any of the vocab properly, just by parrot like recitation. And hopefullly, some Roman civ will have sunk in from films? It may be less daunting than you think, with an A level brain tackling the questions. It is probably well worth having as a GSCE. An cousin of mine took up Classics from scratch when she was 50, did a degree and took a PGCE in it, and is now a teacher/tutor of Classics. All on the basis of long remembered Latin O'level!

Nettleskeins · 30/03/2018 10:08

I am beginning to wonder if the school organise the prom at our end. I've heard nothing, and presume the school admin just pay up front, and then there is no issue with getting tickets sales from the students later; I presume no-one wants to miss out once the word goes out! [very low key unparty like school - should think everyone is desperate for some excuse to let their [green] hair down]

TheSecondOfHerName · 30/03/2018 12:44

DS1's year group is supposed to be having a joint prom with the girls' school. A date has been booked, but according to DS1, nobody has bought a ticket because everyone is waiting to see if everyone else is going.

chocolateworshipper · 30/03/2018 20:00

No prom here - thank goodness.

DD is officially signed off subject 1 as all coursework submitted. Fingers crossed that the last unit is another distinction so she'll get a D*

She expects to finish the coursework for subject 2 during the holidays, in which case she'll get signed off that subject on the first day back.

I'm not sure whether she'll get the coursework for subject 3 done over the holiday too. In her mind, she's not going back at all after the holiday, but we'll see. I actually think it would be more relaxing to spend the holiday finishing subject 2 and just go to a few more lessons of subject 3. But then - what do I know Hmm

marmiteloversunite · 30/03/2018 23:43

We did prom after GCSE. My DD's Sixth form had a cocktail party with casino and dancing arranged by staff last month. Must be very hard for the kids doing A levels and having to arrange/organise their prom too. Extra stress they don't really need.
