Christmas half term - Year 13 (another original thread title!)

Carrying on from previous thread

I'm so rubbish with thread titles. Anyway...

This time last year there was lots of chat about tests/exams/mocks at this point. Are there fewer of them, or is everyone more chilled about them?

DS had a similar email that went into his spam folder. Fortunately that aspect of my nagging has paid off and he found it. It's somewhat redundant at the moment as he's only been to the one interview but he will be ringing up about the other after Christmas. I'm not expecting sweeteners from them because they have the Name and Reputation. They are also his second choice.

I have been calling this the "pick me" dance from the start because I knew that there was a likelihood of chequebook waving. It's nice to feel wanted but when you are spending three or four years there you have to look at the bigger picture.

HesMyLobster the driving test is a knock to confidence but (unlike A levels) she can go round again and no-one will know whether she passed on attempt one or five unless she tells them.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 24/12/2017 09:05

I'll get dd to check her spam email, just in case but like you knitting, I'm not expecting anything like that for dd.

TheDrsDocMartens · 24/12/2017 10:58

Nothing like that here either.

Littledrummergirl · 25/12/2017 13:00

Just wanted to wish everyone a merry Christmas. I hope everyone has a lovely day. Extra thoughts and love to knitting.

MsAwesomeDragon · 25/12/2017 16:17

Merry Christmas to everybody. Xmas Grin

OhYouBadBadKitten · 30/12/2017 15:31

oops! You fell off my TIA, which is a bit ironic! Merry Christmas all and
I guess we've almost made it to Happy New Year Grin

How's everyone doing? Teens feeling more rested? Homework panics setting in?

dd faced up to two extreme challenges yesterday: Talking to the bank customer service on the phone after her applied for bank account application stalled. Unfortunately they then put her on hold to talk to another team and after 25 minutes we had to go out, so weve no idea why it hasn't gone through. It's been a bit of a nightmare trying to set up this account. Santander - you have absolutely pants customer service! You've lost a customer now. grrrrr.

And she managed to go into a shop to ask to swap an item of clothing for a different size, without having to do the backing away from the counter thing.

These are both good progress things for someone who can be so anxious about this stuff.

OP posts:
UrsulaPandress · 01/01/2018 11:53

Happy New Year

Dropped off my TIA as well.

Very little work been done over the holidays. Suprise suprise. Still waiting for DD to put in an appearance since going out last night.

Horse has managed to injure himself in his stable so at least she can't go riding so some work may be done later.

Heads down now for mocks. Eek.

HesMyLobster · 01/01/2018 12:51

Happy New Year to everyone on my favourite thread!
Hope you've all had a wonderful Christmas etc.

DD has been busy socialising, resting and working (extra hours at part time job) over the holiday.

She's done a fair bit of reading but not much actual studying so far.
Still a week of holiday to go for her though because they didn't break up until 22nd.
Then a week of study leave while they do mocks.
So I think some revision may start happening over the next few days (hopefully! But not until she's recovered from last nights partying! Wink)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 01/01/2018 13:12

dd has done much less work than she usually would. I'm really pleased that she's had a good rest, but it also makes me slightly nervous about upcoming exams. We shall see if the balance was right or not. Fortunately it's not mocks but college make them stay for extra sessions if they don't do well enough...

OP posts:
Icouldbeknitting · 01/01/2018 14:05

DS did mocks well before Christmas, they have another round in March according to the college calendar. There's been absolutely zero studying happening here which is more or less what I would have expected.

catslife · 01/01/2018 14:16

Signing in to wish all on this thread a Happy New Year. Hope that it's a much better year for those of you who haven't had a great 2017!
One disadvantage of breaking up early is that dd goes back to college tomorrow. This is going to be a shock to the system given that dd was still up at 2.30am this morning!

Littledrummergirl · 01/01/2018 15:03

Happy New Year. Ds1 has managed some revision, much more than ds2 anyway. They both have mocks when they start back.

Nettleskeins · 01/01/2018 17:13

We went to Lanzarote this Christmas. Ds1 didn't do much work, but tbh I am relieved he at least got out of bed every morning at a normal time and socialised with cousins and siblings. I think if he had stayed in London and done "revision" he would now be a nervous wreck, fought non-stop with sibligs, and done neither work, socialising or exercise but watched screens all night and slept all day.. He does seem to have done a bit of work though, despite being on holiday, at least his sleeping patterns are more normal as a result, and he has a tan...

Still, he is very excited that his UCAS has finally gone through (we had the email on 23rd!!! and acknowledgements from two unis already) but not surprisingly no offers just yet - don't think the uni admissions offices are so super keen as to work through Christmas and bank holidays Grin

I've just taken the twins to Jumanji.

Nettleskeins · 01/01/2018 17:16

Icould many many best wishes for the year ahead, spring cannot come soon enough.

Nettleskeins · 01/01/2018 17:25

Ds delighted me yesterday by asking if we were going to any parties soon. Today was a neighbour's curried turkey party (for 70 year olds) I decided we weren't going...ds was quite disappointedSmile This is the reason he looks forward to school, mocks and all - a chance to socialise.

starfleet · 01/01/2018 19:02

HNY all. Wishing you all health and happiness.

DS has spent a fair bit of the holiday working. He has to pay for his lads holiday this summer somehow!

He has done some school work/EPQ though so that's always bonus.

chocolateworshipper · 01/01/2018 21:18

Happy new year all.

Managed to have a good Christmas, but DD has been having massive problems with the ex-boyfriend - he's hassling her and even went to her work place today Hmm If it carries on, we've told her to phone 101. Just when I thought the new year might be more peaceful for us ...

Littledrummergirl · 01/01/2018 22:41

Chocolate, make sure her employer is aware he's hassling her. Provide a photo if needed and remind them of their duty of care.
If your Dd is under 18 you can act as an advocate for her.

When I worked in retail as a supervisor, if a colleague had similar problems and were being approached on checkouts then they could call and either the "customer " would be asked to go to another till or the colleague would be relieved.

A good employer will want to know and help.

TheDrsDocMartens · 02/01/2018 02:28

Happy New Year everyone.
Mocks in Jan here too. Dd1 has been working on her essay question practice over the holidays. Both her and dd2GCSE language questions need a bit of current affairs knowledge ( e.g. immigration) to answer fully so both are coming to me with questions.

ShanghaiDiva · 02/01/2018 03:57

Happy new year!
Ds is working hard today, think he has just realised that school finishes in late April, he has one week of study leave and then exams start. It will all be over by mid May.

raspberryrippleicecream · 02/01/2018 08:50

Happy New Year

Kitten my DD shares similar anxieties, well done to your DD!

Chocolate that's rubbish, I have no useful advice but hope it gets sorted.

We go back to school on Thursday. DD won't as she has her driving test in the morning and no classes in the afternoon.

Mocks start in a week, at the moment DD is calm, and concentrating more on Coursework.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/01/2018 09:14

crikey shanghai. It will be a long summer for your ds.

Icouldbeknitting · 02/01/2018 09:33

The draft A level timetable is out now for anyone who wants to look. The draft came out a couple of months ago, I was haunting it so we could book a cruise before July. I think DS is also done by the end of May.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 02/01/2018 10:21

How are they done so early? dds last exam isn't until 25th June.

Unexpected wave of nostalgia this morning taking the decorations down, including the ones dd made in pre school. waaaahhhh.

OP posts:
UrsulaPandress · 02/01/2018 10:50

Dd was meant to be checking her exam dates yesterday.

Not been done obvs.
