Most American 'recipes' aren't really recipes, are they? They're assembly instructions.

I've just found a recipe for Pineapple Upsidedown Cake; ingredients list - 1X plain cake donuts, 1X can pineapple slices.

I suspect there must be a massive swathe of American cooking that I have yet to discover.

(And 'pie filling' is not an ingredient.)

(And neither is 'pizza sauce'. WTF?)

Who said Americans can't cook

expatinscotland · 02/03/2010 17:29

Probably the people who don't even notice the aisles and aisles of ready meals and frozen processed food in UK supermarkets.

We went to New York last year and ate very well. Pastrami on rye in Katz Deli where they filmed the orgasm scene in When Harry Met Sally, oyster stew in the oyster bar in Grand Central Station, good steak and burgers, lovely Mexican and Italian.

But on our last day I went to a street stall and had deep-fried oreos! They take an oreo biscuit, dip it in batter, and fry it. I didn't know how many they were going to give me, they gave me six! It has probably shortened my life expectancy by at several years!Yummy! The biscuit melts and caramelises. Sometimes you just have to eat junk.

I think it's difficult to generalise about people; some Americans are Roseanne, some are Frasier.

Well, these people aren't talking about cheese whizz and cake mixes!

jabberwocky · 04/03/2010 00:41

Well, that seems to have killed it...
